One thing I really love about Steven Tyler is after this song he set up a foundation called Janie’s house and over saw a lot of construction of several safe homes for run away girls who was abused by the parents

Considering he became the “guardian” of a 14-year-old girl that he had sex with and then impregnated and then forced to have an abortion? He’s hardly the person to be a poster child for child sexual abuse

This is a song no one expected Steven Tyler to write. In their autobiography, Walk this Way, Tyler wrote: That song ["Janie"] is about a girl getting raped and pillaged by her father. It's about incest, something that happens to a lot of kids who don't even find out about it until they find themselves trying to work through some major fucking neurosis. It's a song about abuse in America. The real fight was over the line "put a bullet in his brain," which John [Kalodner] wanted to change to "stand out in the pouring rain" because he was afraid they wouldn't play it on the radio.

They compromised; "bullet in his brain" made the album version, but "stand out in the pouring rain" was on the radio edit. Kalodner did win one fight; the line "Jacked a little bitty baby" was originally the more-explicit "raped a little bitty baby", but Kalodner got that changed, because he convinced the group the song had potential as a single, and even having "rape" on the album version might discourage airplay. (Kalodner wasn't wrong: the song went to #4 in the US, #2 in Canada, and #1 in Australia. And, um…#76 in the UK. Get it together, UK!)

I read the book Walk This way, a great book! However, I'm not so sure that I would say nobody expected him to write about it. Uncle Salty, an Aerosmith song which preceded it by 14 years, was of a similar nature. I'm a big fan of their music from the 70s and those songs had a lot of depth to them as well.

Aerosmith's best! Tough subject matter (incest, sexual abuse) but brave of them to put it out there. Steven Tyler founded 'Janie's House' to help abused girls. Great song. Great cause.

Didn't help that the mother was ignoring it like it wasn't happening and she stood there and did nothing to help her. But yeah it was a good video and it really brought out during that time about sexual abuse because it was a lot going on at that time even before then.

The two most storytelling lines of this song IMO are "He jived a little bitty baby the man would have to be insane" and "she said But No one would believe me, he was such a sleaze and now HE's never gonna be the same". What did her daddy do, indeed! I was the first song I'd ever heard both demonizing men(or father's) going after young girls and celebrating a young girl defending herself when she can't get help.

The “nobody believes me” line is heartwrenching to me. Bad enough that this stuff happens, but when she can’t get any help, that shows the problem is more widespread than just the target of her gun.

One of THE most honest..empathetic and controversial songs..written in the Music Industry. When this first came out people weren't talking openly about this topic..yet. It helped start conversations. I was very proud of Aerosmith.. for writing this song. They took the heat from some critics.. about its controversy and released it regardless.

Fun Fact: One of Aerosmith's earlier hits, "Rag Doll" also touched on themes of incest and sexual assault. It was just more coded and subtle.

This song never fails to bring tears to my eyes. One of the first songs to actual discuss childhood sexual abuse, specifically by a family member. My cousins were molested and raped by their father, who did the same to me and other kids as well. It messes your head up bad. We're all still working through it almost 35 years later. Steven Tyler wrote a great song that brings this topic to light and the group did a brave thing to release it. Especially at that time when, even in the 90s, it was still a taboo subject. Now we are able to talk about it more but back then, it was a risk but they took it and it worked to really bring focus to this topic and Steven created a foundation from this as well.

Steven Tyler said in an interview that this was one of the most difficult songs they have composed in their entire career. While they were composing the melody, their constant obsession was that they had to express with the chords the despair and feeling of helplessness of Janie, a girl raped by her father who (as she can find a way out of her life) decides to get a gun and kill her aggressor. And without a doubt they managed to express it, with a nervous and dark melody, some bass drum hits that express the shots of the gun, and with the beautiful and personal voice of Steven Tyler more anguished than ever. The song is a masterpiece, one of my favorites from Aerosmith.

Writing this song and confronting the fact that this sad situation is an on going sickness in our society, took a lot of courage from Aerosmith. It is such a great song to promote help for those who are suffering in silence. I hope someone gets help because of this on KZfaq. Great reaction. Please 🙏 help these kids. The meaning is even worse. It's her dad who abused her since she was little, and no one believed her. She killed him and got arrested. The band set up a foundation against abuse when the song came out.

I’m so glad you guys heard the message, I’ve seen so many reactors completely miss the story and the fact that she was being abused. The supposed story behind this song is that Steven either read or watched a story about a girl being sexually abused by her father and he felt this was something that needed to be talked about so he decided to write a song and he already had the music of hook in his head so it’ll all came together that way. You guys would probably enjoy reading the Aerosmith autobiographies and Steven Tyler’s does the noise in my head bother you. And yes the scarf on the mike stand is a Steven Tyler trademark. He always does it, to this day. Another heartbreaking song that is about child abuse is hell is for children by pat benetar. It had a lot of controversy when it came out because of the title but it’s an anti child abuse song

@@jgsrhythm100 I actually already know uncle salty, and I didn’t say this was the first song where Aerosmith talked about sexual abuse but it is the first where they talk about a father abusing his child. And I’ve read multiple times about Steven telling the story of how the song came to him. This was the first one I ever heard because I was about 9 when it came out and the video was on mtv all the time. Back then I didn’t really understand what it was about, I started to realize as I got older. And when I was about 13 I started listening to more older Aerosmith, the non hits and stuff and through my teens started becoming extremely into them, I love every decade of Aerosmith 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and even 2000’s. I love the extremely raw, bluesy early stuff but because my first experiences with Aerosmith were from the 80’s and 90’s I also love that stuff too. I know just about every Aerosmith song, I own every cd. And I also have many collaborations Steven has done with other because he’s my favorite singer of all time. I personally don’t think there’s a more versatile singer out there.

I remember the first time I heard this song I was driving in my car. I had just heard the intro before Steven started singing and I got chills all over my body. I felt like it was a deamon possessed song. It scared me. Then I listened to the words and really understood. I found this song to be profound. I could have been Janie. That was my story. The only difference was that I did not have a gun. At that point in time no one was talking about incest and/or child sexual abuse. There were little to no resources or help out there. It is better now but the problem is staggering. The harm it causes never leave. You may learn to cope well but many never do.

Me too Pamela. I was planning to murder my dad when I was placed into foster care. My name is very similar to Janie and when I first heard the song I thought he was saying my name. Freaked me out. It has been 40 years since I was abused, haven't heard this song in more than 20 years and several times it almost brought me to tears. The worst part (for me) is not being believed...

The scarves - ha ha. When Aerosmith began, those scarves had little pockets in them were various pills, uppers, downers, speed, you name it, it was in there. The band as a whole had some real issues with drugs. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry are referred to as the Toxic Twins. At one point, Joe left the band, drugs were part of the reason, his then wife was a bigger part. We should all be thankful they all overcame their demons and are still with us today.

Very correct on the Toxic Twins. When Guns ‘n Roses opened for them as their Appetite for Destruction Tour, only fine as an opening act, I saw them open for Aerosmith in Columbia, Maryland. G’nR had to stay on stage for a longer set, as Aerosmith was still at their hotel due to an OD, so they arrived to the stage late. I’ve never seen a bad Aerosmith concert ever.

I had front row tickets to see Aerosmith in the middle of their drug days. When Joe was gone. It was the WORST concert of my life! The guitarist (reiterate- NOT Joe Perry) was spitting on the audience and holding out his leg for people to touch and then kicking. Steven Tyler got in his face onstage and yelled "you leave my audience the F*ck alone. I got crushed because people rushing to the seats we paid for. No crowd control whatsoever. Ended up watching the rest in seats sort of to the side and behind the stage. Roadie was ticked off and broke a guitar of a band member on purpose- a la "The Who"style. Such a dissapointment. I am glad they cleaned up. But for years I didn't want to attempt to see them live again, because it was such a terrible concert. I probably would try again and go now, if it wasn't for Covid keeping me from concerts for the time being.

I wouldn't call it historic. Most kids at that time walked away from Aerosmith because of that one song. At that time rappers where ripping off rock music to make their rap songs. They justified using rock songs because of the whole thing around Elvis stealing the black sound. To today I can't stand that song and still hold it against them for the collaboration. Aerosmith in one song put their stamp of approval that blacks started rock n roll. You only heard that song on MTV. You never heard it played on your local radio station.

This came out when my girls were in elementary school. That was a conversation that’s not in the parenting manual. Thank you for this song. It’s real and raw and the conversation must continue about child molestation.

Spaced. Another story-song. Aerosmith tells stories in most of their lyrics. Been on board with the band since the very beginning. Intelligent blues-rock. Good 'n gritty! Love Aerosmith. Have all the early vinyl.

It's implied that other people are the ones who didn't take Janie seriously by the line "nobody believes me". The dad got what he deserved for abusing her in the first place.

You're one of those people who will jump through all kinds of hoops, rather than just simply admit you were wrong about something. There is no shame in being wrong about something. When I'm wrong about something, I WANT someone to let me know I'm wrong, so that I can learn something and not keep repeating wrong information about a subject in the future. It's a lot better than your response here. Your denial that you were wrong is so ridiculously easy to see through. Again... just allow yourself to be wrong... There is no shame in it.

I think my favorite part of watching your fun videos is the nostalgia for me. I graduated from high school in 1989, so loud music you’re playing is right out of my teen years. I love it!

I’m glad you finally did this video - I’ve been hoping for it for a long time. Definitely one where you can get caught up in the story and the music is just a fantastic backdrop to set the mood. In the second verse, where he sings “he jacked a little bitty baby, the man has got to be insane”, the original lyric wasn’t “jacked” - the record company felt the word he used was too strong and they agreed to change it.

“Kings and Queens” is Aerosmiths best song, in my opinion. I think you guys would really like it. It’s a deep track that casual Aerosmith fans have probably never heard.

Great choice! I'm tired of all the reactions to their later stuff. They put out several albums before all these songs everyone is reacting to. They go way back, but these reactors are not doing their first several albums. Drives me crazy!

This was Aerosmith proving that they were more than just a party Rock band, that they could get serious and say important things, and I love them for this. They showed they have dimensions, & people woke up and went, oh, the party boys can have a conscience! And it was awesome, because there was not a whole lot of conscience going on in the 80s aside from like, Live Aid and such, so it was pretty great to see this happening with one of the legendary party bands of the 70s.

I’ve seen Aerosmith many times spanning all decades since the 70s. You’re correct. There are always scarves / bandannas / cloth items that have from the microphone. IMHO, when you see them live, particularly in past years, where large screens weren’t available, those scarves would seem to take on a life of their own as the mic stand would be swung about.

The scraps of material Steven puts on his mic stand started out "Very early on," he tells Blender, "I had a favorite macramé shirt that I wore onstage all the time and an Indian scarf in my hair. The shirt and scarf got worn out and torn off me eventually," he says, but rather than throw them out, Tyler "hung them on the mic-stand for good luck. Over the years he has said that they are from his kids blankets etc so they are always with him on stage

This is my favorite Aerosmith song because of the subject matter. Steven has created charities for this crisis. And I was so glad that they used their platform to bring attention to a serious subject matter that was avoided by many other groups.

Wife here..Went to see Aerosmith on the "Pump" tour Charlotte , NC...AMAZING energy!!!..This band has been through many musical styles throughout their career...,Though I prefer earlier Aerosmith.., all styles are Amazing..And it is sooo chaotic and deep..Thanks Guys!!
