Everybody loves Livin' On A Prayer. It's universal. As a rockier-than-soft-rock anthem, it's perfection. I was in a pub one New Year's Eve about 20 years ago and a covers band was the night's entertainment. It was great, but when they gave a pitch-perfect performance of Livin' On A Prayer it was next-level.

This was the second single of their third record, "Slippery When Wet", which came out in 1986. While the first single "You Give Love a Bad Name" came out ahead of the album in the summer, it was a smash hit but it was the success of "Livin' on a Prayer" in late fall of that year that catapulted the album at no. 1 of the charts in several countries and Bon Jovi into international stardom. The first album was just titled "Bon Jovi" and is known today mainly for its lead single "Runaway", the first professionally written and recorded song by Jon Bon Jovi and the only song from the first two albums to have stayed a setlist staple after the successes of Slippery and the fourth album "New Jersey". The second album was "7800° Fahrenheit", the least played Bon Jovi album until 2015's "Burning Bridges" with only "Tokyo Road" making the odd appearances on setlists when the band played in Asia until the 2001 One Wild Night Tour. The first album was a typical glam metal album while the second album was darker and grittier due to Jon and Richie having both just come out of serious relationships. In Jon's case, things turned around soon after: His ex, his high school sweatheart Dorothea, and he got back together, they married during the Slippery When Wet Tour and Jon wrote a song about that, "Living in Sin", for the New Jersey record. They're still married to this day.

@GermanLeftist
@GermanLeftist Жыл бұрын
@@patrickbateman7769 Yes, and no. Everette Bradley even played with Springsteen in the past, but he aint no Clarence Clemons or even Jake Clemons, in so far that they can be compared. David Bryan, while a great keyboard player, is no Prof. Roy Bittan. He also ain't no Dan Federici, even though that call is a lot closer. Same when comparing him to Charles Giordano. On bass, I actually have to say that I consider Hugh McDonald the superior player when compared to Gary W. Tallent. On drums though, it's a close call between Tico "The Hitman" Torres and Mighty Max Weinberg, so close in fact that I couldn't pick which one I'd say is "better". This leaves the guitars: John Shanks can maybe compete with Patti on rhythm guitar and that's it. Both Steve van Zandt and Nils Lofgren play leagues above him. On the other hand, Phil X is better than Little Steve but when Bruce lets Nils rip, OMG. Sorry, Phil, sorry Richie, Nils Lofgren is outstanding and absolutely underrated. Also, I don't even want to talk about lead singer because Bruce actually still can sing, even if his voice has also lowered with age, just as Jon's, but he still has a stage presence and can hold a note, while Jon struggles with that.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but that "wah-wah-wah" effect through the song is a vocal/guitar effect called a talk box. Guitarist Richie Sambora is seen using it in the video. Let's face it, there are many great things about Livin' On A Prayer, but its genius is that late D-major-to-G-minor chord shift. It makes a perfectly composed and constructed rock anthem that long since hooked you, absolutely irresistible. Pulls off a similar trick to the one McCartney does with the late chord shift in Penny Lane.

Me too! Back when there were cool clothes, guys wore those tight Cavaricci pants. Remember Seruchi jackets anyone? Who didn't have one of those black jackets in the 80s? And then dance clubs playing slow songs, and guys would buy a rose and send it to a girl, and then go up and ask her to dance. Sigh. There was romance then. We didn't just order hookups like takeout on Tindr, lol. I'm glad I grew up in the 80s. I was 16, when Jack and Diane came out by John Cougar, and boy did I love 16 and 17, lol !!

When the videos for this album were done, Bon Jovi was actually still an opening act. The director of the video decided he wanted to make the band appears to be bigger and more popular than they actually were at the time, so he filmed these videos with a big stage, full light show, flying thru the air, etc. You want to see how they really were live, check out the video for "Lay Your Hands on Me." That video captures their live show from their "Jersey Syndicate" tour perfectly. It's been over 30 years, and it's still in the top five shows I've ever seen.

Here's a good Bon Jovi story. Went to their concert around '88 in Knoxville, TN. Halfway through the concert they lowered a catwalk over the audience. Jon was singing a song as he was walking over the audience. When he got in front of us somebody threw a stack of large plastic cups at him and hit him in the head. He was a true professional and never missed a word. He just smiled and kept singing. True story.

This came out in the late 80's, no digital audio boards, no LED lights, the lights here are 2000 watt lights with thin plastic colored film that you had to change to another color if that what you wanted. Artists today have no clue how hard it was back then to create a stage presence. Wearing leather like they are was HOT made you sweat. DMX was still in its infancy and required 3 phase power to run as you has upwards to 500 lights at up to 3000 watts each, need 3 pin stage plugs to handle it. Audio was thru 56 channel audio ANALOG boards. Imagine having to recreate a mix for each song.

I lost count of how many Bon Jovi concerts I've been to, but they are amazing live each and every time. They've been my favorite band since I was 11 and I am now 47! I've been in the front row at Gillette Stadium (Bon Jovi fan club early access perk!), I've been on the stage (with a group of other contest winners), and I've had Jon reach out and touch my hand during "Bad Medicine". This man and his music have been a great source of comfort and happiness to me over the years. So glad to see that you both appreciate the band so much. Thank you, from a die-hard Bon Jovi fan!

I've seen them a couple of times. In 2001 I saw them in DC. I was a Flt. Attendant and we had some of the Bon Jovi crew on our flight.. Anyway, after my crazy flying partner chatted the guys up, we had tix waiting for us at will call and an orange bracelet. Didn't realize it got us nearer to the stage on platform against the side walkway . When Jon came our way, I reached out and he grabbed my hand (❤️) while my crazy flying partner grabbed his tush...all on the big screen. People recognized us later in the ladies room. We were famous (for 15 minutes). Not bad for a short DC layover. I did attend this concert, however, in 1987. 🎸

Also have to admit - JBJ was friggin' good looking. He still to this day looks 20 years younger than he is - albeit without the hair. Bon Jovi was all over radios back during the 80s & 90s. They infiltrated different genres with crafty lyrics and music and expanded by doing so. I was never a fan at the time they were big, but grew to respect what they did. Musically, not that bad/great overall (8). Personality and interaction with their base - 10. Put them together and it's a solid 9 for popularity.
