This version of the song is a tribute to the original “Gracias a la vida” by Violeta Parra, one of the most influential chilean folklore musicians. This was the first song in her last album, “Las últimas composiciones” (The last compositions). A few months after its release, Violeta committed suicide, which is why many people consider this to be her goodbye song. Mercedes Sosa is also a very important argentinian folklore singer, and made this tribute album to Violeta some years after her passing. I hope this was helpful!

Major props for giving Mercedes Sosa a shot! Despite the low number of views this will get compared to the more bombastic songs. I myself have to confess that I listen to J-pop and Indie Rock 99% of the time, but when my grandmother died I had Mercedes Sosa and Silvio Rodriguez to accompany me. Their music is challenging but it also, in a way, let me know that the mess of emotions inside of my soul was normal. In 3 or 4 minutes chaos is a melody. Music is a spectrum! And that's why I love it so much.

She died in October 4t, 2009 and her wake was at the National Congress. A multitude of people went to say Goodbye there. She was the most important female voice of our folklore. But she also sang with our iconic artists from National Rock, like Charly García, one of the most famous rockers in Spanish language. He is one of the "fathers of our National rock", and you can see them both singing one of Charly's song in this video. I leave the translation of the lyrics, so you can enjoy the song better. Charly said about this song that it seems an old man that remembers his past, but the character Charly imagined was a young man who predicted his old age. You should try hearing Silvio Rodriguez (a Cuban artist), he is a master of the acoustic guitar, his voice is awesome and his lyrics are beautiful too, my favorite songs from him are "Oleo de mujer con sombrero" and "El mayor", but all his songs are great

When I was young I was sooo stupid, I didn't like to hear this kind of mmusic because it was "comunist"... after coming to Brazil (I'mm Chilean), all the time I played the guitar people asked me to sing this song and I, ashamed, have to saif I didn't know...
