And So, Suzuka Nokomoto Jpop Idol is reincarnated as Su-Metal THE Metal Queen. The neck collar is in reference to Yoshiki (composer, drummer) for X Japan. He head-banged so hard that he damaged his neck requiring him to wear a neck collar while performing. He is friends with the girls. X Japan is the greatest rock/metal band you've never heard of. Su's birthday was the day before the concert, she turned 16(!!) and Yui and Moa were 14 at the time of the concert. Would you believe Su, Yui and Moa are trained actors?!?

When people say that Babymetal is not real metal…….🙄. When three small Japanese girls are more metal than most of the poser screamo bands out there … it’s hilarious. There are only a few , if any , metal bands out there that can have this kind of crowd control at every concert.

I'm aware that the 'intention' behind ppl saying this is different and stupid as it is - BUT - at face value, as of the line itself, they're actually not wrong imho. Metal as it stands has its roots and has since split into some more or less major sub-genres we all know. What Babymetal produces though falls often outside the known, western spectrum of what is typically considered 'Metal' - so in a sense, they're not wrong. Imho Babymetal nearly creates its own sub-genre with not many other bands falling into it - through the combination of highly contrary styles and concepts, they manage to create something different, 'new' (at least for western audiences) and special. I too would feel bad to say that Babymetal is 'just' Metal - because for that their music is just too different overall.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。When you see this video, you should close the curtains and lock the door. What if your neighbors or family members saw you watching a video of dark ceremony where a young girl was being crucified? 😄 Anyway all necessary information about this song has been already told here. No further ... Oh oh! Just one thing, I witnessed newly arranged BABYMETAL DEATH 3 times at Budokan on Feb.19, Apr. 14 and 15, last year. That was short but much heavier than this and I saw Su, Moa and Momoko (one of Avengers) all crucified. 🤣

There's a lot of symbolism going on here, all about where the band was at that time and where they were going. Other commenters will fill you in on most of it, I'm going to focus on this being BABYMETAL's transformation song. The band has a delightfuly silly mythology about the girls and the KAMI being selected by the Fox God to spread heavy metal around the world. When the band members take the stage, they stop being Suzuka, Yui and Moa. They are possessed by the heavy metal spirits and become SU-METAL, YUIMETAL and MOAMETAL. This song was usually played at the beginning of their concerts and it's the moment when they transform. SUMETAL DESU! is like saying 'I AM SU-METAL!', which is like the anime trope when a character transforms into a super-hero, like Sailormoon's 'Moon Prism Power....MAKE UP!' In interviews, the band often referred to this as a real thing, like they would play-act at it being real, and they would let themselves think they were becoming someone else. I remember seeing someone talking about watching them rehearsing for their collab with Rob Halford and they said 'but they weren't really BABYMETAL yet'. I think it might have been one of the reasons that they were able to be so fearless on stage when they were younger.

There are many performers who have very different real life personas, but with very different stage personas when they inhabit their 'stage' selves. It's much like using a 'stage name' for their performing, and their actual name off-stage. Sometimes performers refer to it as "taking on the character". For example, Ashley has said that her "Halsey" persona does things she'd never do as herself. Some years back I recall an actress talking about a VERY risqué transparent dress that was worn without underwear - she said it was something she wouldn't ever wear as it was too revealing, but that her character would flaunt it, and that's how she wore it in the scene. IIRC correctly, it was Rene Russo (sp?) about her character in the remake of "The Thomas Crown Affair".

@@GOTGames And in Japan they usually shorten Desu to just Des. And to the Japanese ear Des and Death sound exactly the same. So....Des = Death. It's a double meaning to them, Su-Metal, Des! means both, I am Su-Metal AND Su-Metal Death, Suzuka is "Dyeing" and becoming Su-Metal. That, and they did this ceremony for each of the girls on their 16th birthday where they "Died" and were reborn as Metal Goddesses.

⚡ 💀 💕 / 💀 💀 💀 Just to clarify, the song title is 'BABYMETAL Death', not "DEATH Legend 1997". This concert was Legend "1997" Su-metal Seitansai. Fans will often shorten that to 'Legend 1997'. Seitansai means "Holy Birthday". It's often used in Japan to refer to Christmas. That December 21st, 2013 concert celebrated lead singer Su-metal's birthday. Su turned 16 the day before this concert.

just want to add 2 short things. 1. 1997 is Su-Metals birthyear, that's why Legend 1997 - secondly in addition to Tony Griffin: I am/we are in japanese is "desu". Excellent reaction / experience, thanks! :) Song's name is "BABYMETAL Death" and that concert was Legend 1997 (SU-METAL seitan sai) aka SU-METAL 16th birthday party and took place on December 21st, 2013 at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba. Lyrics are quite simple: "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L" "SU-METAL desu", "YUIMETAL desu", "MOAMETAL desu", "BABYMETAL desu" "Death death death death death death..." etc Desu (the U is silent so it sounds like the English word death, pretty much means "I am, you are, we are" so they were introducing themselves. This was usually an opening song but this time they used it as a closing number. The meaning of the whole thing is the sacrifice of SU-METAL, giving up her mortal life as a human and Idol to reborn as a metal Goddess. The beat at the intro and the statue crumbling at the end are tributes to Metallica. The neckbrace thing is an tribute to Yoshiki Hayashi from X-Japan. And... by te way.... just in case... #notacult 😁

Usually this song was used as the opener to introduce the girls/Babymetal but for the 10th anniversary shows the made a shorter (shin) version without any lyrics that, in my opinion, is slightly harder hitting (if that is possible lol). 🤯 Full blown Gobsmacked!! This is what I love to show people who think BABYMETAL are not metal. Which band crucifies their lead singer in front of 20K chanting DEATH!? Only a band consisting of 3 small girls. That's metal! I also have been a metal fan for decades and have never been so emotionally tied to a band before BABYMETAL. It would probably take me pages of writing to get my thoughts out about why I love BABYMETAL as much as I do and I only found out about them in the past 3 years. btw this concert dedicated 16th birthday of Suzuka Nakamoto (lead singer). 1st song of this show was Avemaria intro + headbanger night of 15 mix (dubstep version of Headbanger) (u can check it out if u like dubstep (scrillex style) ). Yes Babymetal doing pure dubstep. Not sure why. Maybe Suzuka like this style? :) They perform dubstep version twice. on 15th and 16th birthdays of Suzuka. its called "Headbanger Night of 15 mix". But its not live singing and 100% backing track. because lot of electronic effects on voices.

SO, SO GLAD to see you've dived into the Fox Hole headfirst without any regard for your safety and sanity. The Fox God loves that kind of attitiude - as do we! Although simply a play on the verb 'to be', since the only 'lyrics' are just "I am SuMetal/ I am MoaMetal/ I am YuiMetal/ We are B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L!", this is the performance I recommend for anyone doubting BabyMetal's Metal credentials. I thought I was very Metal going to see Sabbath on my 16th birthday (and having a sneaky pint of lager too to make it really edgy!) but SuMetal is always going to have the best story about what she did on her 16th..."Oh, you know, the usual. Birthday cake, my friends sang Happy Birthday, lots of cards and prezzies, got crucified in front of 20,000 people while an incredibly skilled Metal band played." 🦊🤘🤘🦊

Ok so we Crucified Su on her 16th Birthday show ! She got better and is our Metal Goddess now 😁 you being given all the info about it . Can you imagine this song opening there show ! ( minus the crucifixion) the girls come on stage at a slow march and when they put there arms up and the fast music starts at stadium/ Arena type shows huge circle pits start up all over . There shows are an experience everyone should experience they did not win best live band twice for nothing and Su Metal Goddess twice . Su , Yui and Moa are something special ❤❤ ♥ 🤘🦊🤘

And this is how you turn your intro song into your closing one. Death is their introduction song due to the wordplay between desu (silent u, translates to I am or we are) and death. In the 5 years they performed this song Su was crucified around 5-6 times but this perfomance and the one from the Baptism XX show are the best. After Yui left they changed their intro song to "in the name of" which is also amazing.

Yes and now: They used 3 different songs as Opening songs since Yui left: - "In the Name Of", usually followed by "DIstortion" - "Future Metal", usually followed by "Da Da Dance" - "BabyMetal Death" shin ver, that debuted ad the recent Budokan 2021 shows!

Please remember this song is called "Babymetal Death" not "Death" alone, arigato 🙏 During Metal Galaxy live tour 2019/2020 they used another cool short intro called "Future Metal" usually with "Da Da Dance" or as an intro of it but without performing on that intro. During 2021 live shows at Budokan they performed 4 times a new short version called "Babymetal Death" Shin Version (even heavier sound). And just like Rick told you, this would have been performed with YuiMetal at Legend S, along with "Distortion", but sadly she couldn't. Thanks for sharing info and keep commenting 🦊🤘

you really need to watch "The Guide to Babymetal" before you go any further down the Babymetal Fox Hole so you fully understand the significance and symbolism of this all, cause right now your flying blind in this lol, this is all part of the last 3 songs which all tie into one another ending with this song, the story starts with "Head Banger, Akatsuki, and Death", also if you loved this one you will also lose "In The Name Of" live at budokan 2021, I should also mention that they will be dropping a new album very soon as they have already started teasing several new songs

Since it's her 16th birthday... part of this might be a bit of a reference to the fact that Japanese idols / JPop girls from manufactured bands tend to have their career end right around then. Sometime between 16 and 18 depending on the band / genre they're stuck in. They're no longer shiny young and new enough to be the perfect manufactured plastic product, now they're almost adults with opinions and feelings, and no one wants that. Congrats on growing up, Su. Welcome to the rest of your career.

Fun fact: to pronounce foreign words with "th" in japanese they use an "s" sound. For example, bath and bus are both pronounced "bas" so for "death" they are saying "des". Desu is a word in japanese like in this context saying "this". So they use this song as their first song usually (that I've seen) where they say "Babymetal desu" (we're babymetal!), Su-metal desu (I'm Su-metal)" etc etc but obviously they use the "death" pronounciation as that's more metal XD another fun thing to react to would be when they (babymetal) did a reaction to americans seeing babymetal for the first time! I think it was the fine bros channel?

I've said it once I'll say it again No Body is ready for Death. Lots of tidbits going on here. Music nod to Metallica, Neck brace nod to X Japan and breaking the statue at the end another nod to Metallica. And yet as hard as that was Babymetal still manage to have their Kawaii moments. Near the start when their pointing at each other Yui and Moa are nodding to each other, and Moa is almost giggling. Later when they're putting the neck brace on the kawaii smiles Yui and Moa give each other. and moments later Yui has to fix Su's hair because you know she has to still look good up there. Lastly Su would later mention she felt the flames were too close to her and how much she could feel the heat. Since then, I have noticed the pyro at their shows have gotten farther away from her. Next up how does Babymetal top the song the use to introduce themselves in concerts. Check out "In the Name Of" from legend S. Also, the even harder version of Death they did for the 10 years of Babymetal at the Budokan. The Death Shin version. Not as long because they didn't do the extended crucifying part. Can't wait for the new album to drop.

babymetal know how to put on a performance, mamamoo and band maid also can put on insane live performances better than most and then babymetal who steps it up even higher. I have been around for decades I guarantee the metal and rock bands of the 70s and early 80s did crazy stuff but none of them had the balls to crucify a teenage girl on stage.
