Hey TheHeavy! Good reaction! Thanks for checking out my favorite band BABYMETAL! The group mixes j-pop vocals with heavy metal music, something that you would think just wouldn't work but it does! The name is actually a play on words, in Japanese heavy metal is written like: ヘビーメタル (hebii metaru), but if you add just two marks to the first character it changes into: ベビーメタル (bebii metaru), or BABYMETAL! It's meant to signify the birth of a new kind of heavy metal music. This video was the studio audio played over the live performance. The skeleton suit wearing musicians in the background are called "Babybones" by the fans and they're just miming, but ever since this performance the girls have been backed by the absolute metal masters of the Kami Band. Normally "Gimmie Chocolate" isn't the song I would recommend for someones first exposure to the group as it's the one I first saw and dismissed them as a gimmick until I rediscovered them about a year later. If I had seen one of their other songs I think I would have been a fan right from the start! This was their first big show in the west. They originally booked a small side stage however the organizers bumped them up to the main stage due to the buzz they were generating. BABYMETAL 101 Founded 2010 and produced by Key “Koba” Kobayashi from the Amuse Inc. talent agency. Babymetal name comes from the birth of a new style of metal fusing j-pop with metal creating what they call Kawaii Metal (Cute-Metal). The group currently consists of Suzuka Nakamoto aka “Su-Metal” (22 years old) sometimes referred to as Vocal and Dance, and Moa Kikuchi aka Moa-Metal (20 years old) sometimes referred to as Scream and Dance. With a rotating trio of girls filling the third slot, in a 3 member formation. These girls are known as Avengers and are Kano Fujihara (15 years old), Riho Sayashi (21 years old), and Momoko Okazaki (17 years old). They are supported by a rotating selection of talented backing musicians known as the Kami Band (Kami is usually poorly translated as gods, but in truth it more closely means awe inspiring spirit, entity, or object) It is why they are dressed in white to look like ghosts or spirits, though Kami being used as God(s) is so common in translation the white outfits get lost. Past Formations. Heavy Music Club Era (2010-2012) From 2010 to 2012 Babymetal consist of a three-member formation, Suzuka Nakamoto (Age 12), Moa Kikuchi (Age 10), and Yui Mizuno aka Yui-Metal (Age 10). First starting out as the Heavy Music Club as a subunit within the Developmental Idol Group created by Amuse in 2010 known as Sakura Gakuin. (A group that would introduce girls between the ages of 10-15 to music and dance through Japanese Pop idol music. Given a school theme, all three would be a part of Sakura Gakuin until their graduation from it in the same school year they would graduate from Japanese middle school or 15 years old. Suzuka graduated in March 2013, and Moa and Yui in March of 2015.) During this time there was no lore, and the girls costumes were more punkish in nature which they helped create. They also didn’t perform with live music, using a backing track or the “Skeleton band” people pretending to play music behind them. Music Video of this Era Doki Doki Morning Iine (Pronounced EE-NAH) Headbangya Babymetal Era (2012-2017) Starting in 2012 with the Legend I concert, Babymetal began its slow divorce from Sakura Gakuin, and was the first introduction of the Kami Band as well as the “Lore” that is still heavily involved in Babymetal but makes far less sense than it did during this time. The Lore is complex and involves a battle against other evil idol corporations, gaining powers running a resistance group, all at the direction of a mythical deity known as the fox god, against a all power enemy known as Akiba. The first Legend show I was the Kami Bands introduction to the end, but it also had the Skeleton Band which is seen in the wildly popular Gimmie Chocolate Music Video. This was followed by Legend D, and then Legend Z, in which is was learned that Babymetal would continue as its own entity after Suzuka’s graduation from Sakura Gakuin in March of 2013. Slowly over 2013 the Skeleton Band would be phased out of all live shows, as Babymetal came into their own. Babymetal as it is most commonly known as with Su-Metal, Moa-Meta, and Yui-Metal, Kami Band, and a somewhat understandable lore is what consisted for the majority of it’s existence. Also established beyond the 3 member formation, they had 2 other set ups, one was what fans called Su-Solos, and it would just be Su on stage with the Kami band, performing a solo, and the other is known as Black Babymetal by the band themselves, which consisted of just Moa and Yui. Music Videos of this Era Gimmie Chocolate Megitsune Road of Resistance Live in Japan Iijime, Dame, Zettai Live at Sonisphere (No More Bullying Forever) Karate The Dark Times, The Chosen 7 Era In December 2017, Yui would miss the Legend-S concert for health reasons, these health problems would prosiest into 2018 and greatly affect the 2018 touring season bring the “Chosen 7” formation, consisting of Suzuka Nakamoto, Moa Kikuchi, and 2 backing dancers Minako Maruyama, and Minami Tsukui. Changes they would not tell fans and all throughout 2018 communicate extraordinarily little causing lots of pain for all involved fan and performer. This era is noted by their strange armor like costumes, sometimes referred to as Elf Armor. To make the poor communication, and Yui’s absence wasn’t bad enough, one of the more regular Kami band members, Mikio Fujioka passed away after falling off a balcony in late December 2017 while star gazing. A beloved and incredibly talented musician lost leaving behind his wife and only child. In September 2018 Yui would formally resign from Babymetal, stating her unspecified health and wishing to move on. Babymetal themselves announced that the group will move on focusing on Suzuka and Moa. (Something many idiots within the fandom refuse or are too stupid to understand) In October Babymetal had a concert called Dark Night Carnival which added dancers, Shoko Akiyama, Saya Hirai, and Kotono, placing a total of seven girls on stage. This was also done without warning to fans and was an absolute mess. Babymetal would finish off the the 2018 tour season returning to the 3-member formation with just Saya Hirai joining them in southeast Asia and Australia. Ending one of the most troubling times in Babymetal’s history. Music Videos of this Era Distortion Starlight The Current Era (Metal Galaxy) The current set up was first introduced in 2019 during the Babymetal Arises concert in Yokohama, before the start, the “Avenger” support dancer concept was explained in the lore, and the concept thanks to communication and a maintaining of the 3 member formation brought Babymetal out of dark times brought about during 2018. Babymetal seemed to have returned to its roots with the Avengers, as 2 of the three (Kano and Momoko) come from Sakura Gakuin. The third Riho, went to the same performing arts school as Suzuka during the same time, Actors School Hiroshima aka ASH. Music Videos of this Era (Avenger confusion) Which Avenger one sees can be confusing for those new to Babymetal. For the Music Videos, Pa Pa Ya, Elevator Girl, and Shanti Shanti Shanti, it is Kano Fujihara, who was just 14 years old at the time. Da Da Dance is a compilation of Momoko and Riho and a splicing of 2 different shows. In most fan cam videos of the American and European tour it would be either Riho or Momoko, as they toured with Babymetal in 2019. Kano had responsibilities with Sakura Gakuin as it’s president, a position Suzuka and Moa both held in Sakura Gakuin, and she’s never flown on a plane before. Some fans for 2019 did throw a stupid temper tantrum over the use of new Kami Band members who are from the west now known as the West Coast Kami Band, but like how the girls won over many, so did they and the payoff with the Legend Metal Galaxy concert was well worth it.

To answer the most important question first that you didn‘t ask verbally, but via your facial expression: Yes, it‘s perfectly OK to like it. :-) It was obvious that you were torn between smiling and frowning, and often that‘s because metalheads want to like it, but hesitate to admit it because of the Pop and cuteness. The first step to enjoying BABYMETAL is to drop all preconceived notions of what Metal has to be. Then you can enjoy the heavy music, catchy choruses, energetic dancing and happy smiles. And you might start to realize that they are more entertaining than any other band, because they are so much more than just music. This show was pretty early in their career, the music in the background was a backing track, the skeleton guys were only miming playing the instruments. Yes, I‘m not a fan of that, either. But soon after that they started playing with a real band, and every single musician in that one is top of the crop. The band does stay in the background for the most part (although to a varying degree over the years). But you‘ll get your chance to see them shine. The girls are not playing any instruments. But I don‘t have a problem with that at all. They are singers and dancers, why should they? Every facet of their entertainment package is cared for by those that do it best, whether it‘s the writing, the singing, the dancing, the instruments, the stage setup... and the result is damn near perfect, in my opinion. Their catalogue covers a wide range between Metal and Pop. There are few songs that are free of the Pop influence, and even fewer that are without the Metal element. Then there are those like this one that are strong in both departments. They also add elements of various other genres along the way. You think it shouldn‘t work, but somehow they make it, and it‘s awesome! You should always be prepared to be surprised, although not all of them reach the same WTF level as „Gimme Chocolate“. To me they are the epitome of entertainment. You can’t have a bad day when watching them. You‘ll see what I mean once you watch a live performance. I've loved Metal since I saw Sabbath live in 76 and hundreds of bands since and, after seeing Babymetal live in Feb this year, have to say they are as Metal as anything out there, This song, while being the best Metal song about eating too much chocolate (come on, Rammstein - keep up!), is one of their more 'pop' type songs, even though it has some great Metal running through it. Babymetal are the only band who've ever given me slamming Metal and also made me smile and, after 44 years of seeing the same acts repeated over and over (must have tattoos, must be growly, must look mean, blah, blah, blah), it's a really refreshing change. I've seen the likes of Metallica, Maiden, Sabbath live but the most Metal live performance I've ever seen is still the Babymetal song Death, as performed on Su, the lead singer's, 16th birthday! Oh, forgot to talk about the band. If you see them in those skeleton outfits, they are a mime band called Babybones. Not really playing the instruments. Early on, Babybones "played" most of the live shows before the real band came out for the encore. That real band is called the Kami Band. They are legit metal musicians. They play entire shows now, and there are a lot of guys that make up the band. There's even Eastern and Western versions of the band while touring.

You asked the questions so we will try and answer them. But its a lot of info so I will try and compress it the best I can. So there was this guy, Kei Kobayashi (Known to all Babymetal fans as Kobametal) who was a life long Metal Head and was working as a producer in the children's branch of Amuse, Inc. When Amuse started a New Idol group (Idol groups are generally groups of young girls between the ages of 11 and 15 years old and they are generally forced out of the groups whey they graduate from Middle school at about 15yrs old) in 2010 called "Sakura Gakuin" (Cherry Blossom Academy) Kobayashi lobbied to have Suzuka Nakamoto (the lead singer) join the group as he had seen her perform before and thought her voice would be well suited for an idea he had to create a "Heavy Music" club inside Sakura Gakuin. Amuse was not as convinced about the idea but allowed Kobayashi to proceed albeit without funding until he could prove his concept. So as was common with Idol group, he put the girls together, had a song written and produced for them (Doki Doki Morning) and the girls learned to sing and dance to the number and performed it during the first show for Sakura Gakuin--in borrowed costumes non the less!! The number was well received and a single was produced. It actually did well so money started to come into the project and more songs followed. Now, as to your questions about the band. As was typical in the Idol groups, singing and dancing was normally done to a backtrack of music. Such was the case in the video you just watched. The Band here, known as "Babybones" were just actors miming to the music. Suzuka did sing Live at this concert however for this video, the studio version was dubbed over the performance. Head spinning yet? Just wait. Starting in 2012, at certain shows and concluding with this concert in December 2013, a Live Band called the "Kami Band" or 'Band of the Gods' made up of some of the best session musicians in Japan, would perform Live for the last part of the shows during the encores. This concert was the last time Babybones performed with the act as the Kami Band would play live at all subsequent shows. And all of the members of the Kami Band are known. The main players have been Mikio "Kogami" Fujioka(lead guitar) R.I.P., Takahashi Ohmura(lead guitar), BOH(Bass), Hideki Aoyama(drums), Leda Cygnus(lead guitar), Isao Fujita(lead guitar) and a hand full of others too. There is also a group that is known as the Wester Kami band that has supported the group since 2018 on their North American and European legs of their World Tour's. As to the girls ages....Suzuka Nakamoto is currently 22yrs old, Yui and Moa are both currently 20yrs old. But when Sakura Gakuin started, Suzuka, aka Su-Metal was 12yrs old and Yui and Moa were 11yrs old. The performance you just watched was on December 21, 2013, the day after Suzuka's birthday. She had just turned 16 and Yui and Moa were both 14yrs old. The concert was called "Legend 1997" denoting the birth year of Suzuka. Also of note here, Yui Mizuno left the group in 2018 due to an undisclosed health conditions and has been replaced by a rotating trio of "Avengers"...non-singing backup dancers. One last thing, some people took offense to the lyrics of this song, placing their values into it and claiming that the song was "Body Shaming" young women. But as Su-metal has stated, its just a light little song about a small worry that a young girl may have about gaining weight if she eats too many sweets. Anyway, this was just their big "WTF" video that went viral, but they have many more fantastic songs. Some heavier, some darker, some sweeter and some...well, just pick a category and they probably have a song in it. Great reaction man! I know this song is a bit WTF but you took it in with a smile. To answer your questions: the lead singer was 16 here and the 2 other girls were both 14, now they’re 22 and 20. The girls don’t play any instruments (not live anyway Moa can play some guitar) their live band is called the Kami band and consists of some of japan’s finest session musicians who rotate for different shows. Good first reaction ... and as is usual if 'Gimme Chocolate' is the first BABYMETAL song somebody hears almost the first words out of your mouth were "WTF". Don't worry, this is the correct response along with the (slightly bemused) smile you had pretty much the whole time. Your specific questions seem to have already been answered and there is some excellent information in the comments already, which I am glad to see as it saves me a lot of typing. I will say that traditionally there are three stages people go through when they first discover BABYMETAL that go along with the first 3 songs they listen to: Song 1. WTF did I just watch, it was weird, the music was a lot heavier than I expected, but there were 3 Japanese girls dancing and singing and I'm confused. How old are they anyway - I will have to listen to another song. Song 2. That sounded really good. That band can play but the vocals contrast and they're not what I expect or am used to, but they somehow work with the music. I'm still confused though, there was more dancing and that crowd looked mad. I'll have to try another song to see if I can get my head round it a bit. Song 3. It is still weird, but it just sounds so good. I never thought I would like anything like this (I couldn't have even imagined anything like this existed), but I have to hear more ... I'm going to binge and listen to everything they've ever done. Leave me alone for a couple of days while I do that. You will find that every song is different. They play virtually every metal genre (thrash, speed, power, prog, djent, nu-metal, folk, pirate, black, death and so on), but mix it in with J-pop aesthetics and other musical styles or genres (ska, reggae, Bollywood, Latin, EDM, dub step, rap and more)often when you least expect it ... and they make it work every time. Some songs are heavier, others lean more to their pop roots but every one of them is crafted and quality, there are no fillers in their albums. You will also find that they are much better live than they are on studio albums. Their albums are like a taster to give you a flavour of the songs you can expect to hear when you see them live. At the live shows you not only get the Kami Band (some of Japan's very best session musicians) playing live, you also get to hear Su-metal's voice without all the over-processing they insist on doing in the studio and to top it all off you get a show with all the choreo aimed at interpreting the songs and getting the audience completely involved so they become a part of the performance. Yeah, you cought the highly contagious BABYMETAL bug. Most of us here had experienced it - the WTF, speechless, smilling for no reason and also the 'should I headbang to this?'. The only prescription available is to watch another video of them. Be carefull with the dossage. I got addicted to it that I binge-watched almost all their vids in one single night. I totally didn't regret it.

Live performances are way better than "music videos." Karate is a decent Music Video though. I would do either Karate or Road of Resistance live in Japan next. Headbanger live at Legend 1997 is really good as well. Yava and Syncopation are my newest found favorites. They have a ton of good stuff. Definitely different than typical metal but it is metal nonetheless. This song is definitely good for shock value but is far from even being a top 20 song out of all of the Baby Metal songs.

You just watched the most popular and famous Japanese band in the world. Hammer metal magazine announced they were voted one of the top ten metal band of all time. The girls are the "pointy end" with song writers, choreographer, set designers, costume designers, and currently 2 highly skilled bands (1 for Asia the other for the US and Europe) creating superb music and highly skilled/professional live performances. This is the 10 year anniversary for Babymetal and the "girls" are 22 and 20. You can do the math. Last one they are the first Japanese band to chart a #1 album in the US. Babymetal is not what you expect, and they are constnatly changing. They're kind of a prog metal band really, always experimenting. Always try to find a live video performance with this group. They feed off the audience and those are generally better than the album versions.

The members themselves are very aware that their initial impression is often "WTF?", and they compare that to what they thought when they were first introduced to metal. Since then, they've been joined on stage for this song by members of Korn, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and DragonForce. And also, I went to their show last year, not to see them but to see Avatar and when Avatar was done I was out of there so fast. But looking around the crowd, I was struck by the number of creepy men I saw. Just saying.

I know all that you’re going to hear from are the people who for whatever bizarre reason, think this is good. But it’s not. And it’s not just that it’s bad. It’s stupid. I mean painfully stupid. I really hope you don’t feel compelled to react to more. Especially when there’s so much good, legitimate metal out there to react to. Sorry, I just can’t take it when I see otherwise great reaction channels start to go down this road.
