I was thrilled when they brought it back for the 2019 tour, and I finally got to hear it live at the LA Forum. Even though the song is about a fifteen year old girl attending her first heavy concert, Su was only fourteen when the studio version was recorded. It's not biographical, but it is a song she could relate to. At that age she was on stage, rather than attending concerts. : ) This is from the Legend "1997" concert, named for Su-metal's year of birth. She turned 16 the day before this show. The venue was Makuhari Messe, a convention center outside Tokyo. BABYMETAL perform there quite often. This was a relatively early show, with an audience of around 9,000. Their biggest shows were at Tokyo Dome, with back to back nights of 55,000 people.

Well spotted with BOH the bass player having 'Happy Birthday' written on his head - he would often have something relating to the show written on his head - in this instance, as has been pointed out already, the show was the day after the lead singer Su-metal's 16th birthday - she was born in 1997 so Legend 1997 was her birthday party. So yes the young ladies of BABYMETAL are in their 20s now, but this show was in December 2013, Su-metal just 16, Yuimetal and Moametal are 18 months younger than her, so they were still only 14. They started as BABYMETAL in 2010 - Su was 12, Yui and Moa were 11. Sadly Yui left the band in October 2018 following a 12 month absence for undisclosed health reasons. Su and Moa chose to continue as a duo and through 2019 to their shows at the Budokan in Tokyo at the start of this year they were supported by three more young ladies (The Avengers - Riho, Kano and Momoko) who would take turns dancing (but no vocals for them) in the third spot. BABYMETAL are supported in all live shows by the Kami Band, some of Japan's very best session musicians (and they can play everything, not just metal). In this video they were the late and very great Mikio Fujioka (RIP Jan 2018) and Leda Cygnus on guitars, BOH with his 6 string bass and man-machine Hideki Aoyama on drums. BABYMETAL started as a sub-unit of a bigger Jpop Idol group called Sakura Gakuin. That had a school theme and was for girls aged 10 to 15. They were formed around Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-metal) with her vocal talents and stage presence and when she was 15 she was due to graduate from Sakura Gakuin. It was decided that as BABYMETAL had started to build an audience of their own from nothing (against all expectations) that when she graduated BABYMETAL should separate from Sakura Gakuin to become a band in their own right as her vehicle to further her career as a singer. In anticipation of Su's graduation and to see if there was a chance BABYMETAL might make a go of it they played a couple of small headline shows in tiny venues with 150 capacity and they played the food hall at a festival. The Kami Band were brought in for the festival appearances and to play the encores in a couple of shows after October 2012 and through 2013. Legend 1997 was the final stage of the transition from Idol group sub-unit to independent metal band. The Kami Band came on for the 5 encore songs. Their next big shows celebrated the release of their first album - that was at the start of March 2014 at the Budokan in Tokyo and the Kami Band became their full time support and backing band from then on - they have been with them ever since. BABYMETAL have 3 studio albums (also some live albums and many live performance DVDs) and about 50 songs now. every song is different - they have songs in virtually every metal genre but they will also mix in many other musical styles and genres with the metal, usually when you least expect it. Some songs are good hard metal, others lean towards their pop roots and they do everything in between - they never get boring and are now one of the very best live acts on the planet. I hope you react to more from them - and if you don't like a song (unlikely) no problem, try another and it will be different and the chances are you will love that one.

Great & welcome & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。BABYMETAL performed in your city in their 2019 USA tour at Terminal 5, Manhattan. This was filmed in 2013 (Can you believe that this is the 12th song after 11 exhausting performance?) and BM's activities have been worldwide since 2014. In the latest world tours from June 2019 through March 2020 (prior to the pandemic), they performed live 20 times in USA, 19 in EU/UK/Russia and 1 in Taiwan in addition to 15 in Japan. It's nice to hear someone with knowledge of music appreciate the different aspects of their music that is often overlooked and unappreciated by most. Hey, I'm 1K like on this video. I love when musicians react and breakdown things that I missed. I have always said that metal bands are completely underrated, so many people write them off just because of the kind of music they play. The Kami Band is ridiculously talented. There is so much more to BABYMETAL. No really, I mean there is ALOT to learn about BABYMETAL from their lore (#notacult) to the fan base.

Yeah that drummer is a machine, but this song doesn't even come close to their fastests xD If you really want to see him going nuts, try "Distortion" live at Download 2018, or the official MV for "Road of Resistance" live in Japan! But for this last one, be aware that it gets blocked a lot, so you might want to put a transparent logo on top of the video, or play a bit with the video Opacity!

I thought the intro was High Hopes by Pink Floyd. Odd, that. But it was a really nice, informative reaction. So thanks.

Nice reaction. Su-metal's voice cuts right through the music. It's one of things that makes Su, Su. Then we get Yui and Moa, Scream and dance is their tittle but they are much more than that. As they actually help lead the crowd on when to sing along and cheer and what dance moves to use during the song. Going to a Babymetal concert is a cardio work out. They also sing back up in harmony and they have four duo songs they do together. While Su has four solo songs she does. Giving each other a built in break during the concert. They started doing Babymetal when they were 10-12 years old. This was for Su's 16th birthday. Later Yui and Moa will take over Headbanger half way through for their birthdays. The last one was for Moa's 20th birthday from the legend M concert. Now known as MoaBanger. Headbanger is about a 15 teen year old going to their first concert. Having time of their life when they realize this moment won't last so they try to etch it into their heart so they will never forget it. Funny thing here is that all 3 members of Babymetal were performing on stage before they ever reached 15. I think they must have gone to their first concerts as toddlers. lol We do know that Yui saw Su perform as part of "Karen Girls" before they met. But that's a story for another day. you were way off about the info for Babymetal. this was filmed in Dec 2013 for the lead singer's 16th birthday. the other two girls were 14 years old at this time. Babymetal is originator of kawaii metal, cute metal. they were formed in 2010 when the lead singer was 12 and the other 2 were 11. Babymetal is like no other band out there. they so good live. you need to check more of Babymetal. you wont be disappointed.

I'll join the chorus saying that the "1997" refers to the lead singer's (Su-metal) birth year. The concert was in December 2013 the day after Su's 16th birthday, so yes that is "Happy Birthday" written on the bass player's (BOH) head. The other two girls are 14 in this video and they had a Legends 1999 concert for their birthdays earlier in the year. Immediately after this song they do "Unfinished Akatsuki" and "Babymetal DEATH" and all three songs together take Su through a coming of age, loss and final acceptance of her destiny and I recommend you listen to all three songs together - but remember #notacult ;-) Headbanger is about a bittersweet coming of age for a 15 year old girl who goes to a concert and enjoys the mosh pit while knowing that she's about to become an adult and she wants to remember the fleeting feeling of the night...that sort of bittersweetness is something that the Japanese love and it is called "mono no aware". BM is the lead singer Su and Moa and Yui are the two dancers and backup singers. Their main jobs are to add highlights Su's vocals and coordinate the crowd interactions with their dancing and shouting. BM has a live backing band called "The Kami Band" and they also work with a backing track for pianos and synths etc. If you want to see more of the band then check out songs with Kami Band solos: Rondo of Nightmare, Yava, Catch me if you Can and Akatsuki. First this concert video is from 2013. The legend of 1997 is Su-Metal the singer and she turned 16 the day before. Yuimetal and Moametal, dance and scream are 14. They have a charisma level most can only dream of, Su's command of an audience is unreal. Babymetal was created in 2010 by Kobametal, an Amuse Talent Agency. The band is the Kami band made of some of the best rock/metal musicians in Japan They sold-out the LA Forum in 2019 and the first Japanese Band/Group to perform at the Wembley Arena in the UK (broke all records for merchandise sold). Their success in Europe and the US has opened the door for many Japanese Bands to the West, starting with Band Maid followed by Lovebites and many others.
