Probably SOME truth and SOME "urban legend". Beastie Boys started out as NY Punkers. But the punk scene was dying by the time they came along. One thing they were hearing though, was RAP. So, as almost a Joke, they decided to try RAP out. They probably weren't the first, but they were the most authentic. Nothing really like them at the time.....Fight for your Right, Brass Monkey, No Sleep till Brooklyn....License to Ill was definitely something unique.
@torrirusso

They did start out as a hardcore punk band. Hip hop was never a joke to them & punk wasn't dying out; they just all found they enjoyed making hip hop records more, though many of their albums also include punk songs as well as instrumental jazz tracks etc...

You have to check out Gratitude. That song is a perfect blend of their punk rock and hip-hop roots. They started as a punk band in the late 70s when it was huge in the UK and the USA, but fell in love with hip hop when it got started and decided to switch it up and become a rap act out of pure love for the music. They didn't come fake and kept it real by doing rap with a punk rock attitude and it just worked (Honestly, as far as the message behind the music goes, rap and punk rock are both as revolutionary,, street poetry IMHO). The video for the song is a tribute to the legendary English rock band Pink Floyd (amazing music that you should check out), but the song itself just blends the rap and punk rock message and attitude perfectly. Check it out sometime soon! You'll love it! The music and lyrics are raw as hell, plus you get to see them on their instruments in the video.

As others have said, guy in green is AdRock... and he was/is a goofball of energy. Videos, interviews, whatever he's just ready to be silly and has that underlying extra energy even when he’s talking serious (fairly rare, when interviews are added up). There are YT videos of this from each of the four cameras, both singly or as a grouping, and during that start where they’re holding position Mike D (tan pants) and MCA (purple shirt) from a side view cam you can se pe the other two are pretty decent at patiently waiting... meanwhile AdRock starts low key fidgeting trying to stay still and starts moving his lips and it feels like he’s just internally like “hold it together... hold it together...” And yep, out of the three MCA was the chillest. After their first coupla years rapping (they started in the punk/hardcore scene then took up a passion for rapping while still doing rock/punk/hardcore stuff over the years) had an inner calm regardless of what he was throwing himself into. He had a lot of lightness and fun in him, too, but like you caught on out of the three of them he was the most chill/at-peace.

The legendary Mix Master Mike. He was the first person to start an all DJ group The Invisibl Skratch Piklz. He also proved that a turntable was an instrument. They would have one DJ drumming, one DJ had a record of different guitar tones and chords on each track of the record, one with horn sounds, one on the bass. My dude is a legend. ….and him and Beastie Boys… get outta here. They’re unbeatable. The reason for the long intro is they wanted to show this is one take. No edits, it was live, no warming up… just 3 MC’s and 1 DJ. If you want to check out an amazing documentary on early hip-hop and scratch/DJ’s/Turntablism there is a video on KZfaq called “Scratch.” It’s super dope.

You have great attention to detail. I've seen this video hundreds of times and never noticed the one finger thing with the dj. Great reaction video. Subscribed!

@@OfficialLifeWithRecklezz That Letterman performance is unreal. They start out on the street and rap all the way to the studio inside in one take.
