Then in 1970, along came Bill Chase and his band Chase with I think five trumpets playing. Unfortunately, that ended four years later when their plane crashed in bad weather.

BS&T had such a strong jazz influence in their music it really set them apart from the other groups of the day. Just phenomenal song after song, album after album. Saw them in concert several times! You hear a lot of instruments from BS&T, they even included a tuba!!

Indeed, and a lot of blues also. Paul Butterfield and Al Kooper were heavily involved at the beginning before bowing. I personally think BS&T had the BEST horn section of all, not to mention keyboards. And that Latin interlude in God Bless The Child kicked ass.

@@glennb2227 My husband and I both liked Chicago, too. We had all the albums of both groups and went to the live concerts of both. Chicago was/is his favorite and BS&T was/is mine. Many, many years after our divorce, we went together to go see Chicago in concert.

Our HS band director was a huge BS&T fan. Slide in the band room in the morning and find him with his trumpet jamming out to old BS&T albums.

Blood, Sweat & Tears is a jazz-rock music group founded in 1967. They are noted for their combination of brass & rock band instrumentation. Especially love their stuff when David Clayton-Thomas joined as their lead singer. They have had a lot of great songs such as "You Make Me So Very Happy", "And When I Die", "Hi-De-Ho" "Lucretia MacEvil", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", "Go Down Gamblin'", "Lisa Listen To Me", "God Bless The Child" etc.

I remember sitting in the kitchen with my mom in 1969 (3years old) grooving to the swing, swag, groove and over all kick ass of this masterpiece... The memory of my mom's smile while the flute was playing at the end will likely be with me when I leave...

I know the ending of this sounded weird, but that was the jazz/blues influence of the group. You have to react to more of their songs, such as More and More, God Bless The Child, Sometimes In Winter and the instrumental variations on the works of Erik Satie. Very cool for 1968-69. They had the BEST horn and keyboard sections of all time in my opinion.

I have so many memories of sitting with my father in the summertime listening to oldies and this was one of the songs that he'd play. It's not quite in my er, wheelhouse but it's a good song.

BS&T are very Jazz R & B psychedelic music oriented with a big band from 40's sound. This group helped pioneered this fusion style to the popular music chart and actually paved the way for groups like Tower of Power, Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire, etc......Great musicians and great songs 🎵. Check out "Blues Part 2" and the cover of Billie Holiday's " God Bless The Child. " Really Dope songs. And thank you guys for accepting my request "Spinning Wheel."

That is the late, great Lew Soloff on that trumpet solo. He was a master at his craft.

BJ, basically the mouth formation (called embouchure) and the breath support are about setting the range for playing. The fingering is some combination of valves that give different notes within the range controlled by the embouchure. You don't have to have massive lungs or huge air -- it is mainly finesse in how you control the air that is vibrating your lips. And there are players from all races with the thinnest of lips, and the thickest of lips that can rock that horn. It is a hard instrument to play well. I am an amateur, but have been working on it for 55 years. I have gotten pretty good, but would never claim to have "mastered" it. Music is a gift from God. Listening to it is soul soothing. MAKING it is divine! Pick up ANY instrument you want to play and have some fun learning it and playing it. It will give you appreciation you could never have had without actually doing it. Not sure why they used the "wheel of fortune" wheel here when the song is talking about riding on a carousel (the pained pony) which goes around on a wheel.

Asia jazz intertwined with the psychedelic sound and became jazz fusion. Characterized by the fury and experimentation of free jazz but on electric instruments usually with rock guitar. Miles Davis, Bitch’s Brew is generally credited with starting the genre. Musicians who played with him during this period went on to form some of the most legendary jazz fusion bands of all time including Weather Report, Return to Forever, Herbie Hancock. Also RnB Artists James Mtume, Reggie Lucas (one of Madonna’s early producers among others) and Michael Henderson.

I played trumpet in high school jazz band, and it takes awhile to get the sound right. It's a matter of pressing your lips together and making a buzzing sound. Then do that into the mouthpiece. Then work on air control and different pitches along with the different fingerings.

One of the first live concerts I ever attended was a Blood, Sweat and Tears show close to my home. i spotted and talked to Lead Singer David Clayton Thomas at the back of the venue. He was very personable and we talked for 5-10 minutes, then he went up on stage and did his thing. Great show, great band, and DCT a great guy.

It's funny that whoever made the video defaulted to the gambling/game show style of "spinning wheel", when other lyrics refer to a carousel. In a similar lyrical vein, try Joni Mitchell's The Circle Game, or The Hollies' On A Carousel.

For trumpet the mouth position is called embouchure. That is how you can play tunes on a bugle which is like a trumpet with no valves.

They all met at Gilliard. A band that was short lived. And their all world class musicians. It’s a killer Jazz Break in the middle. Asia you have a very keen ear, and I appreciated your explaining the lips and mouth on brass instruments. I never knew that. I guess from being in HS band. Great Job Guys

Blood Sweat & Tears, CTA and the Electric Flag all came out around the same time in the late 60s. There had been jazz crossovers to pop radio before, but this was different as rock & blues was mixed in. I wonder if it made any impression on Becker and Fagan at the time.

This band launched the career of trumpeter Randy Brecker who went on to form the Brecker Brothers with his brother Michael. Together and separately they played on some of the biggest jazz and funk albums of the 70’s including Parliament’s and Rick James’ best albums along with George Benson, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Spyro Gyro.

Big lips is not an impediment to playing trumpet. Lots of trumpet players have large lips, and there are different sizes of mouthpieces. And there are only 3 keys yes, but the combination of how you use them is important along with using your lips to get the different notes. I played trumpet in high school.

What is hard about the trumpet as a beginner is blowing the high notes. The E note was hard and the highest I could go to. To me it has to do wih lung pressure & lung strength in the blowing notes correctly said I, a 1 year student in high school. The more you practice, the easier it gets.

The trumpet has 12 combinations of notes. A trombone or baritone is for bigger lips and more air pressure.

All of them Juliard trained. DCT never got his just do as a singer. Lou Soloff's trumpet solo at the end of Lucretia's Reprise is just out of this world. You need to listen to "Lucretia MacEvil and then Lucretia's reprise IF you want to hear just how good this band really was.

I played trumpet until 10 years ago when the big band I was in broke up due the death of the director. you have to practice a certain number of hours every day to be good at it and keep your lung, lip, tongue and fingers in shape. That said....THIS is way better than that computer crap they spit out now. Real instruments. You also heard a trombone.

yah guys a trumpet is not easy it takes time to develop the strength in your lips to be good and like all installments, there are best practices but trumpet players make for good kissers.
