*FYI* The origin of the phrase "red haired step child" dates to the 1830's-40's when Irish emigrants began arriving in America. The newly arrived Irish were somewhere below free blacks on the social scale at the time, and lived in segregated communities. The Non-Irish were not particularly accepting of Irish mixed children in their family and weren't patient or sympathetic to the red haired step child and treated them harshly, if accepted at all.

@ModernArtery
@ModernArtery 2 жыл бұрын
People, society as a whole, tend to laugh at tragedy and pain. Sometimes people do that as a form of solace or escape from pain, sometimes people do it because they enjoy seeing others suffer. Bo alludes to both of these concepts here, establishes the moral ambiguity of this behavior, and presents the idea that comedians often profiteer off of these "animalistic impulses of society". For as in-your-face this song is with the messaging, it's surprisingly subtle and layered. The same can be said for a lot of Bo's performances, which is one of the things that makes him such a gifted artist and entertainer. "Goodbye sadness, hello jokes" is an underrated line of his in my opinion. It can almost be interpreted as an ethos or mission statement for his entire body of work, as long as you interpret it with the appropriate level of irony. Comedy doesn't actually solve sadness, but we like to pretend it does, and sometimes it does help a little. The potential for comedy to be a positive force in people's lives, while simultaneously being entirely useless and futile depending on your interpretation and perspective, is a recurring theme with Bo and I think it's a really clever idea for a comedian to put a spotlight on.

As a boy who had red hair, it's about being different in a way that is perceived as a negative. It's arbitrary, it's nonsense, it's a repeated theme throughout society. "That thing you have no control over which makes you observably different? We deem you to be not like us because of that, and therefore appropriate to treat worse."
@Orribo
@Orribo 2 жыл бұрын
I'm from europe i have heard (maybe the person was messing with me) that it comes from ages ago when people thought that people with red hair were ill people or contagious. And nowadays it's completely nonsense (it was before too, but you get my point) and it's just kind of perpetuating some stupid old nonsense shit like with a lot of stupid ideas. Honestly i don't understand it, but yeah i can see your point of view. And what makes it even more stupid is that is only against guys. Girls with red hair kind of get a pass because of the sexualisation i guess

Well its a few things like that and growing up I heard things like 'redheads have no souls' I don't know for sure because I am not an expert but I think a lot of it stems from how Irish immigrants were treated way back when. The railroads in America were some of the few jobs they could get. They were treated really horribly. This is only on the American side idk anything about European history...

most of bo's comedy is sarcasm and social commentary. he doesn't actually believe tragedies should be joked about, he's criticizing comedians that do think that, as well as touching upon that aspect of humanity you mentioned where we can take joy in other's suffering. he's aware that the stuff he's saying is messed up; he doesn't mean any of it, he's just pointing out that some people do think this way.
