Maybe I’m wrong but I can’t help but feel that you missed the inherent evil relayed in the song. This is the origin story of one of humanities greatest villains.

Yeah, I kind of got the feeling that he doesn't quite get Bo Burnham's songs. He hears to upfront portion but doesn't seem to register the message. His take seemed to be, "wow, this is a fun song and the internet does offer a lot". I think MrLboyd may be viewing Bo as a shallow comedian and because of that isn't thinking too much about the inherent message behind it. It's similar to a lot of people dismissing South Park as comical and childishly vulgar without picking up the satire because it's framed as a cartoon show with 4th graders. I could be wrong and thus apologize to MrLboyd if I mischaracterized him but that was the impression I got.

@@jonathanbelfire I'd say that he gets a lot of the messages in most songs, he has reacted to, but I don't think MrLboyd really has a great understanding of the notion of the internet as it is today. And as someone who basically is one with the internet, whatever my wish on here that I can find. There's literally too much stuff on the internet to keep it clean. There's little girls, suicides, murder and rape, everything you didn't want to see on tape, corpses and gore and what's even more, don't let your parents enter that door. Drugs and fake hitmen, and scams in droves, to the extent of which nobody knows. Apathy's a sin and boredom is a crime, anything and everything all of the time.

It seems Bo was narrating that like he was....the devil. That wasn't a song to illustrate the coolness of the internet, it was a song to illustrate you've been trapped like a wild animal with a snare you can't resist.

Yeah I thought it was obvious. I guess it depends on the person how obvious that is. Edit: he asks "can I interest you in everything all of the time?" Almost like a salesman who knows how addictive their product is. Like a drug dealer.

@@iamhereblossom1588 also, "apathy's a tragedy, boredom is a crime", so many people nowadays are bored if they aren't entertained every moment(myself included), and are apathetic to the plights of others, yet consider apathy towards them to be offensive, as if their opinions matter more than others. almost every line in this song hits hard.

The fact that he asked "is that a thing?" after the Potter character line just tells me that MrLloyd has, somehow, managed to stay on the polite side of the internet. He has such an optimistic view of things... I feel like the darker meaning of this one went right over his head.

@tvthecat

This is probably looking too much into it but to me the phrase has a much deeper meaning. Apathy is truly a tragedy and it destroys motivation but boredom is not a crime. Boredom invokes creative thinking, Veritasium has a very good video on it. Internet is built on both lies and facts, just like how the phrase is half true.
@LovecraftianGodsKiller
@LovecraftianGodsKiller Жыл бұрын
@@tvthecat in terms of the song, "boredom is a crime" is basically saying that there is so much stuff available on the internet that it is nearly impossible to get bored and if you do it is seen as a "crime". "Apathy's a tragedy" is a perfect fit before "boredom is a crime" as you can literally find anything that can and will interest anybody and if you don't that is where "crime" that is boredom comes in and takes over.

Now, consider this: listen to the song and think of the singer as a disguised demon, "selling" you on using the internet. It starts by normalizing bad stuff by mixing it in with good stuff, telling you that you don't have to be ashamed, just "shake or nod your head". Then it talks about how the internet started out as a tool, and parents felt calm enough to allow their children to use it, and now those children are addicted, putting their entire lives on the internet while the "demon" laughs and says "it was always the plan, to put the world in your hand." Brilliant.

If you want to follow up on Bo, while I do indeed recommend many of his more entertaining bits like his "Country song" or "From the perspective of god"... I believe the most interesting reaction would be running "Cant handle this (kanye rant)" followed immediately by "All Eyes on me" as they both tell different halves of a fairly compelling story and hearing your thoughts, and breakdown of the lyrics, especially from "all eyes on me", on it would be wonderful

At the beginning when you picked up the circus vibes, that's totally on point. My interpretation of this is that Bo is the ringmaster, and the internet is the circus. His job is to sell you on what you're about to see, and his commentary on "Here's why women never fuck you" right beside "Here's how you can build a bomb" are just examples of the extremes that are all too easy to find yourself in if you get off the beaten path a little bit. Definitely more Bo Burnham in the future good sir. People are recommending the Kanye Rant (Can't Hold Us), and while I completely agree that is one of his most impactful performances, it should be built up to. Country Song, From God's Perspective, Sad, Left Brain/Right Brain. These are all ones that are great that get you some more exposure to Bo, and then you come in with the deep shit that is All Eyes on Me and the Kanye Rant.

Couldn't agree more with what you said about "The Kanye Rant". It's probably one of my favorite, most impactful pieces of theater I've ever seen. This is his latest special, and so different from his earlier stuff. He pushes the boundaries of the comedy genre, has incredibly insight social commentary, and poses legitimate philosophical questions. Also knowing his story and mental health journey is inspiring. His old stuff is witty and offensive for shock value. His new stuff is thought provoking, depressing when appropriate, and hysterical. I really like how it starts of rather whimsical like you say, but gradually gets more and more unhinged, but as it is with the real internet by the time you realise you've gone too deep it's too late, your social life is already tied to your social media accounts, you always have notifications on your phone, the services you use have already learned all about your interests and push more content to you to engage with. Sometimes it's not even deliberate but the system churns and you're just a drop in the ocean and you can't escape.

That opening section of the song is basically just what you see when you scroll social media. If you think of it in that context, "nine year old who died" gets basically scrolled past so quickly that you don't have time to register how deeply gut wrenchingly painful and full of sorrow for so many people that is. Because the song has already scrolled on. It only really hits when it starts getting darker and darker.

The best thing about the special this song is from is Netflix hired him to do a live comedy show in late 2019 scheduled for spring 2020…. You can imagine how that went. So instead he wrote recorded and edited an entire comedy special over the course of a year all by himself in his tiny apartment during quarantine. Some of it is so scuffed, there’s songs where he’s unshaven in boxers and an undershirt in the dark with crap strewn all over his floor behind him, but all of it is so profound and inspired and so so sooooo funny

What I love about this is the way the internet is depicted as a advisory, A insidious force. It's there just to find your flaw or weakness, all the time pretending to be a friend. . Loved the reaction.

You said it. Brilliant! This hits on so many levels. I am 40 and of the generation that grew up mostly before the internet yet I've had it my entire adult life. The line about the parents wanting to put the world in "your" hands is really powerful. We've created this incredible "thing" that has in some ways been the best thing ever and simultaneously the worst thing ever. And it seemingly happened overnight in the mid 2000s. It really is dependent on the user but too many grow up without the ability to control themselves and this becomes a mind-rot utility that our grandparents said the TV would be. It makes the TV look innocent and harmless.

Hope you decide to react to more of Bo's stuff! He has such a range that you kind of have to listen to a lot of his songs to really get a good impression of him as an artist. I see you've also reacted to I'm Bo Yo and didn't really know what to make of it. Bo's early stuff was lyrically brilliant, but now that he's in his 30s, he regrets a lot of his early content. You should eventually give Problematic from his special Inside a listen, as that's essentially what it's about.

It looks at first glance like he's just sitting at a piano and playing and singing, but the subtlest changes in his facial expressions and camera angles are also brilliant pieces of storytelling! It looked like you missed a bunch because you kept looking at the lyrics in disbelief. I'd recommend watching again on your own time just to see exactly how cleverly and EXPLICITLY he communicates. Anyway, his entire "Inside" special on Netflix is this brilliant- and oftentimes moreso! It's also emotionally extremely heavy! I would strongly recommend you react to "Can't Handle This (Kanye Rant)" and then "All Eyes on Me". They're kinda bookends to a 5-year break he took in performing due to mental health.
