Bruce “had a few hits in the 80’s” Has collaborated/toured with Bob Dylan, Elton, Don Henley, Huey Lewis, Michael McDonald, The Doobie Brothers, Sting, Clapton, Steve Winwood, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie, Mavis Staples, Jerry Garcia/The Grateful Dead, Willie Nelson, Ricky Skaggs, Branford Marsalis, nominated for 12 Grammy’s, put out 20 albums over 35 years and his prowess with both the keyboards and voice are better now than when he started, but yeah, he had a few hits in the 80’s…

Was written by Mike Reid - who played for the Cincinnatti Bengals when he was younger. This was co-written - and started out as an up-tempo Country song. But Reid changed it to this jazzy feel. He also wrote Grammy award winning songs for Ronnie Milsap ("Stranger In My House") - and had his own huge recording career in the 1980s and '90s. He was a huge (6'5") man - and gorgeous as hell. Made a piano look like a toy. See his video "I'll Stop Loving You" - and compare him to the upright piano he's playing. He's a big guy. Also see "Walk On Fairth" that he did with Mark Knopfler - and "Keep On Walkin'" . . . He's continued to write - mostly for stage musicals - since his own performance heyday - and is still a brilliant writer and musician.

There are a lot of great covers of this song, Teddy's version is awesome, Adele and even Boyz II Men covered it, but Bonnie - man, she puts something into the song that just is unlike anything else. In an interview she said that for the studio recording they did just one take because it was too sad and she couldn't get through a second take. It definitely hits deep - glad you liked it. Cheers.

0:14 It's Bonnie Raitt ("rate"), rhymes with "great", which she is LOL Written by Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin, Bonnie recorded it for her 1991 album _Luck of the Draw,_ and it was the album's second single. She went on to win three Grammy Awards the next year: Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, for _Luck of the Draw;_ Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, for "Good Man, Good Woman"; and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, for "Something to Talk About". When she performed it live at the 34th Annual Grammy Awards (1992) with Bruce Hornsby on piano, you could hear a pin drop. At the end, she heaved a visible and audible sigh of relief for being able to get through it. Here is the Grammy performance, which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2016: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g6t0rLJ1tdTGdWw.html Here is the album version, which she recorded in one take, with Bruce's fantastic piano solo at the end: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/leBig6SctLmuhGQ.html Many people have covered it, like Boyz II Men, the late George Michael, Adele, and even Priyanka Chopra of all people), but nothing can top the original and the best version by Bonnie Raitt!

The first time I saw her was on "The Midnight Special" and she did an old tune named "Runaway". Sadly, Eva passed away from cancer a number of years ago. I think she was about 35 or 36.

This song will always haunt me. I’m 48 now and happily married with four children. Life is good. But it’s part of the human experience to be able to hear a song that immediately takes you back to another time, good or bad. For me, I was 17 years old and had fallen in love for the first time in my life. I bare no ill will towards her anymore whatsoever, but at that stage in our lives she always gave me just enough rope to hang myself as it were. I remember laying in my room in complete darkness listening to this song and being so numb from the heartache…yet something about the sadness in this song somehow comforted me in a way. You can absolutely feel it through her voice that she went through that same numbing heartache. Music can be so therapeutic and no matter how many years go by where we haven’t heard a particular song, it can always take us right back. It’s almost like time travel. Love this song. Love that this man was moved by it as well, I’ll be checking in again! Take care everyone and God bless.

The song was inspired from an interview that a reporter did on a man who was living under a bridge in Nashville. His wife divorced him. He said to the reporter “I can’t make her love me.” Bruce Hornsby didn’t want to play it like Mike did on his demo of the song with him just singing and playing the piano. They kept asking Bruce to listen again to the demo. Hornsby said why don’t you just have him play it and walked out the door. Once he cooled down he came back in and got his part right.
