J-hope has definitely grown as a rapper since their early days. And, you will see that evolution as you continue to watch the remaining Cyphers. And, if you listen to his recent solo material too. In general, you'll be way more hyped after Cypher 2. As others suggest, react to a version with color-coded lyrics so you can see who is rapping when. Also, you must watch live performances!!! Culminating of course with the epic Cypher Medley from 2017. It's just fantastic...

100%. J-hope started rapping years after RM and SUGA, so it's natural that in the early years he wasn't as skilled as them (that is not to say he was UNskilled, though). J-hope NOW has found his own style, and he's amazing - absolutely equal to RM and SUGA, in my opinion. When you watch his performance at Lollapalooza 2022 (available in full at the BANGTANTV KZfaq channel), or the later Cyphers, or Outro: Tear or Ugh!, you'll see. Mark my words.

@@OT7_DopeOldARMY Absolutely... In my opinion, I would even consider J-hope the best overall performer in the group. The man just does it all. And, his Lolla performance was evidence of that. And, FYI - J-hope isn't even my ultimate bias in the group, so this opinion is not biased at all.

All of them were still teenagers when they put this out! Even as familiar as I am now with their voices, there are still lines where I confuse Suga’s and j-hope’s voices. Another song which I think you two will really enjoy is ‘Dis-ease’ from their pandemic-era album BE. Falling between the huge hits Dynamite and Butter, it feels like BE is the ‘forgotten album’, but this song deserves attention.

What you will notice is that RM is very poetic and aggressive swaggering rap…he had his own rap style and flow. His message is more metaphor and poet. Suga is very swag and soft aggressive towards the haters. His rap is very targeted and flows like river JHope is very positive and he can put people in their place. He has that old school vibe but so modern in a way he can only deliver. He is so cool and swagger too

The story of how jhope started rapping is pretty cool. When the idea of bts was formed there were only rappers in the company... But bang pd (the company ceo and the person who conceived the idea for a hiphop group after finding rm) suddenly added a locally famous street dance kid among the underground rapper kids. There were several other rappers living with suga and rm like supreme boi and iron(who were their friends) during that time. And these rapper boys were constantly doing rap battles with each other... Jhope who only knew how to dance was really intimided by the other trainees but he used pretend he fit in. Within that first year he, purely from observation and practice he picked up all the techniques of rapping. It makes sense he did it fast cus he was dancing all his life to hiphop music. He talked about it in a show called American hustle life that was shot in la. At one point the line up of bts before 2012 included seven rappers: RM (same position as leader), Suga, Jhope, Iron, Supreme boi, kidoh, i11even. When the idea for the group changed the rest of them left the company, some of them lacked the passion bts members had, others were skeptical about the company's intentions, and they were left with rm, suga and jhope. Then the vocalists were added slowly. It was basically fate.

I always assumed that "above the minors" is a wordplay on "above the miners". Miners work underground, and J Hope didn't come from the underground rap scene. RM and Suga got shit from underground rappers for being idols. And there were other lyrical references to BTS' success/potential success being "above ground". Also in reference to baseball, underground would be considered minor-league, and BTS signed to a label would be considered pros. Also, and this might be a reach, J Hope was the one throwing a baseball that said BTS on it, in their debut mv NO MORE DREAMS. Suga's "Chopin of the beat" is my favorite lyric from this Cypher bc it refers to the famous composer and pianist Chopin, and the way he pronounces it rhymed with "dope man". Out of the group Suga was the main composer at the time, and can play the piano well (you should check out Suga's solo First Love from BTS Wings album, where he talks about his relationship with music through a piano in his childhood). During that part of the Cypher you can even hear a piano run.

Honestly I think that the best way to enjoy and actually understand BTS songs, especially the rap heavy ones, is to first listen to the song with a color coded video so you can see who is singing and you can understand the overall meaning of the song, and then read the lyrics on Doolset. This way even if you miss some lyrics the first time you don't have to stop every second, you can focus more on the actual music and then read the lyrics and understand all the references. I recommend using Doolset because it has by far the best translation, there you can find the explanation to every reference or wordplay.

Jhope is more melodic in his older raps and it's true that his verse is lighter because first, he was not in an underground hip-hop scene so he basically has nothing against them. Suga and RM had a lot more experience in that world so they have more to say. (Since they write their own rap from their bars to their flows, he can't write a hard-hitting lyrics without such experience "personally"). Secondly, he wasn't there when some so-called "rappers" are throwing sh*t on RM and Suga. So again, he has nothing against them personally. So his verse is more likely about his being "just a dancer" at first but later became a rapper and develop his own style and now part of the rap unit of BTS. I think you'll appreciate him more if you watch them live. I'd recommend "Outro: Tear" and "Ugh" along with the "Cypher Medley" live. What I like about them is that, you can hear their personal message through their lyrics because they write their own sh*t (well, ofc there are exceptions but the rappers write their own verse except for the full-English song like "Butter" which their rap part is too short and basic) unlike some other so-called rappers who let others write their rap verses and doesn't feel the same to hear an artist rap a verse that they didn't write themselves no matter how good the bars are. This is not to throw hate on idol rappers who are just doing their job. Just saying that Jhope is amazing considering he learned to rap later than Suga and RM but he caught up to them and even learned to write his own verse and flow. I did love to watch your reactions. It's okay if you feel you like Jhope's less because the way you said it is still respectful. We have different opinions. My personal taste is Suga's rap but my brother preffered Jhope's. But of course, all three are amazing in their own ways. Sorry if this comment is too long.

It's okay you do your best you're really trying so much appreciated! It's okay if you don't get everything right away it takes time we get that! Suga and J-Hope definitely have a similar timbre and very often have parts back to back but their style is really different as you noticed! Suga is very choppy, adds vocal breaks, lots of different vocal effects and in the content I'd say he has the most unfiltered/raw lyrics J-Hope is really more about the flow! If you like chops then yes RM and Suga are like rap scientists their skills are incredible! J-Hope is less about that so I think it's gonna be a pattern for you (as it was for me honestly at 1st) to put him last! I think to make sense of J-Hope's rap style it all made sense for me after checking his solo works! He has a really unique style almost experimental! He raps like a dancer in the sense he's looking for a certain groove, flow, pocket and he also sings more, he's the all-rounder of the team! It's okay if you like this style less it did grew on me though with time, but it's definitely different!

They really should react to "Hip-hop Lovers" by BTS to see that these guys are students of the culture and pay homage to hip-hop heads like 2pac and ASAP more than these who-only-rap-because-their-company-told-them-to rappers in K-pop. The film was based on the Hong Gildong jeon, an anonymous Korean novel about a Robin Hood-like bandit. CASSIUS' LANCE - IMMA DONE The Spear of Cassius is a weapon first seen in Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, wielded by Evangelion Mark.06 to stop Third Impact. Originally known only as a “spear” (槍, yari), it possesses a double-helical shaft and a defined spearhead implanted with a green gem and it is first seen at the lunar Tabgha Base in a shroud. Kaworu implied that the Lance and the Spear in concert could rebuild the world. WE ARE BULLETPROOF This line is a reference to BTS’s song “We are bulletproof” (Part 1) , which was made pre-debut.

You should watch Outro: Tear - maybe the live version with the lyrics better! They all pop off on that one, and I particularly love J-Hope's part at the end you can really feel his passion and intensity. The song means a lot to them because it was during a time BTS thought they might break up so the lyrics deal with that, but I think it can be interpreted in other ways too. Also unrelated but I always thought it was an interesting parallel of "above the minors" and then he mentions "major" in the next line. major vs minor chords in music? idk that's what comes to mind

JHope’s lyrics (in all the songs he writes) are really hard for translators to translate cause he uses lots of metaphors and references to pop culture, mythology, etc. Even some words he says in one language sounds like something else that he also means in another language.

J Hope learned to rap from RM and Suga in the beginning, so sometimes you can mistaken J Hope's voice from Suga. He was influenced by them and then developed his own style later on. It's fine cause you are not familiar with their voice. I used to get confused, too. Also, Suga's verse always comes in brutally but smoothly that it may be kind of hard to notice at the first listen.

Its ok, haha on songs that combine rapline & vocal line, Jhope & Suga usually raps seamless one after the other and RM usually gets a separate verse.

Hong Kil Dong was like a korean Robin Hood. A man who done good things, but we can't say it because, at the end of the day, he is still a thief. RM has been recognize as a good rapper when he was underground, but nobody will ever recognize his talent again now that he is an idol.

So RM and SUGA were in the underground hiphop scene. RM at age 14 was pretty famous in the underground world and one day a rapper approached him and asked him to be introduced to the company bighit. After hearing him rap, RM was signed right away. Suga is also in the underground rapper scene and he is more famous as a producer and make beats for a ton of other artist he rapped about being scammed people stealing his beats without giving him money. Jhope was a famous street dancer and in a dance group called Nuern I believe but suga and RM mainly teached him how to rap and now Jhope have his own style personally I really like his rhythm flow when rapping. But BTS cypher 1-2 is a diss track targeted on a rapper who disrespected them (i wont mention any names) but the reason maybe RM and suga were more savage and angry was RM and suga was in the event but Jhope was not. But cypher 3-4 is just diss track targeted to the haters in general. And cypher 4 is like a ending to the diss tracks like they dont care anymore they are successful and you are not (the haters) and bts is going to keep loving themselves so you should love yourself more but too bad because they are going to keep making money

I like your honest opinions as you guys are still respectful to the artists. Looking forward to the other Cyphers and echo the other Armys recommendations for the medley live performance. 💜 Can you add the song Path(Road) to your reaction list. This was a hidden song from their 1st album and one of my fav. It's like Born Singer, capturing their feeling of uncertainty and ambition early in their careers. Thanks. ❤️

This is why the color coded is good. I know it’s not always the best translation, but at the very least, it helped me learn their voices and identify who was singing what. But ARMY really does have specific channels they follow, that stays true to the lyrics and BTS’ morals. So I get the trusfration (that’s an inside joke JK pronounced it trusfrated)

Hi guys, it's fun to watch your journey into the BTS rabbit- hole! Yes, we Army can be over-protective about BTS, but not without reason. BTS and Army has been through a lot. Army is nice and understanding and very happy when people give BTS a chance. And ofcourse you can say that their music or songs are not your cup of tea, as long as you say it in a respectful way and don't just beat down on BTS just because. (And don't you worry, Army knows which reactor is fake and who's real. We can smell bull*€&* from a mile away)...BTS's discography is huge and very diverse. From rap to R&B to EDM etc. I'd like to recommend the youtube channel DKDKTV BTS EXPLAINED. It's from two english speaking Korean guys. They dissect and explain the lyrics of several BTS songs. It will make you understand the lyrics, word-play and the brilliance of the rappers. I hope you'll enjoy.

J-Hope and Suga's voices often sound similar, but their speech patterns and accents are very different. So on some songs/raps it is difficult to tell them apart unless you are very familiar with their cadence style.
