I loved getting to see the depiction of the truce made by British and German soldiers in 1914 during WW1 in the video for Christmas Truce by Sabaton. This is my reaction to my first time hearing the song and watching the video, though I did have basic knowledge of this specific event in history. What a wonderful reminder of peace and the nature of human compassion.

If you havent seen the fallen of WW2 then you ought to. Its not just about death and destruction but carries a very powerful message about peace in the modern world; not just what we ought to do but what we have already achived. As to myself I am in what might seem to be a dark place but I am at peace. I can see hope for a world where the evils and ills of the past are done. Agriculture has not been kind to humanity or the planet and we may just be seeing the key to undo at least some of the damage it has done.

Of course it's not necessary to make to make a separate video for the ending credits. Your reaction is perfect as it is. This song is not about the ending credit vocals, but all about the story of the truce as portrayed in the song / video. Don't feel bad about it missing out on the ending credit vocals. If you want to, you can always watch the music video in its entirety in your own time.

This song is what I consider the most powerful Christmas song I've ever heard, not to mention that it is the song I would say is the Metal Song of 2021 -- nothing else comes close. Every time I hear this song, I either come close to shedding tears, or I do cry. Amanda, a couple of things. First, after the Christmas Truce had completed, a German commander ended up moving his unit to another part of the front lines, as his men refused to fire at the men they had made friends with during the Truce. The cross actually exists, being erected near Ypres, Belgium. This song is a strong reminder of what it means to be human -- while reminding us why we should never forget history... "Lest We Forget."

Someone else mentioned this but I have to echo his thoughts. You really need to listen again and let the credits run. Floor's solo gives this a closure that you really need to hear all of. Also, regarding your thoughts about them still seeing each other as fellow humans. An interesting detail is why the truce worked in 1914 but attempts to repeat it in 1915 and 1916 failed. Aside from attempts by generals to make them stop "fraternizing with the enemy", what you need to realize is that in 1914 the war had only been going for about 5 months. Soldiers could still see their opponents as people. In subsequent years the horrors of war had vilified the enemy and the soldiers were less willing to put things aside and accept them.

This is a great anthem of humanity, but it's definitely must to watch to the bitter end. For two reasons. Firstly: Members of Sabaton (and Nightwish) are true humble gentlemen, who want to credit everybody who were involved to their outcome. And secondly: Never in the music video history is the outro of a song as influential as this, because there is the Floor Jansen doing it.

Considering your interest in mental health, there is a special song from Sabaton that I hope you listen to. The song is called "To Hell and Back", and is based on the life of one of the most decorated soldiers of WW2. After the war, PTSD (then called shell shock) nearly destroyed him. The medication used at the time was normally very addictive and not very effective. Trigger warning, it does talk about his own near suicide, and the official video shows him nearly doing it. He later in life managed to gain control over the PTSD, and rented a hotel room for 2 weeks where he stayed after flushing all his medication, and used that time to flush his body of the drugs although by his own admission if he had any weapons with him at the time he would not have survived.

First, I love that you did this video, it's an incredible video by an incredible band. Second, these kinds of videos barely scratch the surface of what these soldiers in combat face, I come to this conclusion based on videos I have seen about being homeless and relate them to my actual experience of being homeless. Third, this video didn't reignite my faith in humanity, I am lucky in that my faith in humanity will NEVER waver no matter what bad we do. I see the worst we do as a species as the opposite of the best, so the worse we do shows we can reach those same levels of the best as well.

Sabaton is along with Nightwish one of my most cherish bands. Saboton is not political but sings mostly of sacrifices/ heroics of the common soldier/citizens throughout history. Please go back and listen to the aura of Floor Jansen who sings over the credits it represents to me sadness, joy , hope and beauty in mankind. Sadly if true Floor’s aura is not on the studio version & In my humble opinion the first time Sabaton has made a mistake in their storytelling. My suggestion is to do Sabaton’s music video ,” To Hell & Back”. It’s the story of Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier of WW2. Audie Murphy was truly a hero and To Hell & Back was a movie about his heroics in WW2. But Sabaton did the truly remarkable and little known story about Audie Murphy’s willing himself off of his morphine addiction. The treatment for physical & mental ( shell shock-PSD today) was to treat with Morphine. As he was making movies and touring the country as a hero celebrity raising money for War Bonds and raising Patriotism he was literally being torn apart mentally with morphine addiction. He finally decided to secretly lock himself in a hotel room ( under a alias of course) and for over a week he willed himself to overcome his addiction. He had wrote a note explaining if he was found dead in his room it was not by his hand that he fought to the very end to live but the morphine killed him. He went on lived a long time was successful in business movies and life in general. That’s the story that Sabaton chose to tell. Sabaton’s Mantra is, Lest We Forget. They also have a history channel explaining the story behind their songs. May you have a very happy holiday season and a blessed New Year! From a very old Metal /Rock head!🙏🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

This video gets me every time I watch it (which has been many, many times till now). This truce was probably the most honest and sincere Christmas: A short moment of humanity in an inhuman surrounding. But then, when the fighting continues the next day, it shows the cruelty and madness of mankind in the most obvious way. It's sch a sad moment. And if I am not at least close to tearing up, Floor will give me the rest with her incredible voice at the end (as you experienced afterwards)

Thanx for doing this one! Sabaton is a Swedish band that writes and sings about Actual historic events, battles, moments of heroism and wars. They will be releasing their 10th studio album on March 4th 2022. Nice thing about them is that their video's never blocked so it's KZfaq safe. (except for some Wacken video's that gets blocked by Wacken) If you really want to go down the Sabaton rabbit-hole, I would recommend these: (These are all from the Sabaton Channel, and they never block videos so it's safe to use) [live at Woodstock 2012]: Ghost Division, 40:1 and Uprising [Great Tour Live Videos]: En Livstied I Krig (make sure to turn subtitles on), Red Baron, Swedish Pagans, Primo Victoria, Fields of Verdun, Devil Dogs & Angels Calling [Lyric videos]: Attack of the dead men, The Final Solution, In Flanders Fields, 82nd All the way, Sparta, Shiroyama, Cliffs Of Gallipolli and The lost betallion [Music Video's]: Bismarck, Steel Commanders, Defence of Moscow, Livgardet (make sure to turn subtitles on), Fields of Verdun, Rourke's Drift, Screaming Eagles, Uprising The Future Of Warfare (Building Blocks Video) & Seven Pillars of wisdom [Animated History Video's]: Night Witches and No Bullets Fly (not animated music video's, the animated history/story video's) [Covers]: Kingdom Come [Offical video] and I'm sure people told you but in case, Sabaton have another channel (Sabaton History Channel) where they do a deep dive into the history behind the songs with Indy Nidell.

On the Christmas Truce itself, there were a few other things the video wasn't able to show. It started with an impromptu singing competition the night before, when the British heard the Austrians singing "Stille Nacht" after spotting lit christmas trees on the Austrian trenches. To bolster morale in their trench, the British sung back another Christmas song. Before long, both trenches were singing along the same songs, which helped break the divide the following morning. Both sides exchanged gifts with each other, cigarettes, food from home (chocolate from the Austrians, pasties from the British) and trinkets. One man even set up a barber's chair in No Man's Land and cut hair for men on both sides. I high recommend watching Extra History's episode about it.

Thanks for a great reaction. Sabaton's from Sweden and so am I and, like many others, we are very proud of them and they knocked it out of the park with this song but then again they've spent many years writing it because they wanted to do the event justice. If this is your first encounter with them then you have a great journey ahead of you, some recommendations are: "En livstid i krig" - Gothenburg live concert, it's in Swedish but there are captions and this is the best version of this song, "No Bullets Fly" - animated story, "Devil Dogs", "82:nd all the way" and "Defence of Moscow" are a few. Sabaton also has their own History Channel where they give you the real history behind the war events of their songs, name another band that has that 😉 But since it's Christmas I couldn't find that you'd reacted to the accapella group Pentatonix so I have two suggestions for you: "Hallelujah" - their cover of the Leonard Cohen song and "The Prayer" - their cover of the Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion song. Both are great but you ought to start with Hallelujah and do The Prayer after.... then they also have a 90's dance mix which is amazing. Looking forward to seeing more of you. Take care

Thank you for your open, raw reaction. I believe this is Joakim's finest vocal performance to date. You missed the outro, sung by none other than Floor Jansen, so you might want to go back and listen to that part. You're right : December 1914 is the only time this happened. The following year, an order was passed to the British troops that anyone fraternising with the enemy was to be arrested and court-martialled, with the firing squad being a likely outcome if the soldier was found guilty. I don't know, but I imagine that similar instructions were given to the French and German soldiers too.

Oh this was so nice, oh I know the song, I'm quite a long time listener to Sabaton but your reaction and the message afterwards hit a note because what's left of my family usually ends up in sequential minor interdependent fights along "the Season" when we each see the others after a while and instead of feeling happy (I personally detest the notion of baseless "thankfulness") about getting to see one another we do the exact opposite of the Central power and Entente troops in this episode and re-light our decades old conflicts and misgivings, buried resentments and entrenched opinions - only this year, year 2 of the virus (2 oV ;) ), we had the same, but much milder, much friendlier, less filled with old resentments and newly ignited hate. And it works. It is exceedingly nice to see this option and to see it work. Maybe it was just a Christmas truce, but it was nice. Maybe the Fourth Horseman has a good side after all... (not religious but isn't it a nice metaphor?) (also as a former history teacher I tend to think in terms of historical analogy anyway, so yeah? ;) ) Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

The hardest thing any combat soldier has to hold onto is their humanity, here the courage it took for these men who shared the hopelessness in the frozen mud and snow covered trenches longing to be home for the Holidays is truly remarkable. This was a soldier's truce one the Generals made sure never happened again, and punished many that took part in this. Sadly, few of those who did celebrate this great moment ever lived to see the end of the war some 4 years later. A song of Remembrance as well, for all those lost in any war and to those left with their memories to cherish at Holiday times. May we never forget them but more importantly may we remember their courage and try and be better each day that we were granted that was taken from them, it is the least we the living can do. You missed Floor, the Valkyrie Goddess, claiming the dead on the battlefield and returning them to rest with her Aria during the end credits. Something anyone who has lost a person to war will surely find moving.

This was such a good point in history where humanity truly showed itself during such a horrible time. Even during time of killing/etc on one single day both sides showed true humanity even if it was only a short time. Both sides venturing into no mans land, exchanging food, gifts(souvenirs), even prisoners during that time, and allowing of the taking care of comrades who died in no mans land. Sadly it was nearly only word of mouth from soldiers back then as press on both sides basically tried to hide that this happened. And even when they were forced to release things, higher ups still didn't with full truth and not saying what truly went along during the truce that took place over like x-mas eve and day back in WWI in that battle field back then. Sabaton's music teaches so much history with their music. Joakim and the band are just awesome.

The thing you have to remember about the Christmas truce is there were fronts that didn't understand why some people were not fighting. Since the British empire at the time expanded to many different countries, some were brought in to fight the war. They were just happy to have a day of peace and quiet as well as exchange gifts with their enemies. Also Hitler was an officer during WW1 and when the Truce happened he forbad his soldiers from contacting the enemy.

Sadly this truce didn't happen again in the war. High command on both sides ordered massive artillery bombardments for several days before, during and after Christmas to prevent it. Also by 1917 you had the introduction of gas warfare, Zeppelins bombing London, and in 1918 the "Paris gun" (the Emperor William gun) shelling Paris from 120 miles away. At that point they were such bitter enemies that even if they wanted to they wouldn't have made a truce like this.

The sad thing is about Christmas Day 1914, not every section of the western front had a truce. Some sections continued fighting, others used the day to bury the dead that was left in no mans land from the fighting. The leaders of the units that had the truce moved the men around so that the following year this would never happen, they even went as far as issue a standing order that anyone attempting such an act of "treason" would be shot in front of a firing squad. Though I would highly recommend the Sabaton History Channel if you want to know the stories behind any of the Sabaton songs including the full story of the Christmas Truce 1914.

If learning about the truce in more detail interests you may I recommend Extra History here on youtube who dedicated 2 episodes to this. One on the truce itself and one reading a letter written by one of the soldiers. Peter Capaldi, who was playing Doctor Who at the time and just visited the event on the show also read a letter from a soldier at an event.

it's a true story, Belgian, French, English and German soldiers stopped the fight and shook hands on Christmas Day. I hope all those soldiers who died in this butchery rest in peace. These are moments that prove that humanity is not completely dead. Ideally humanity should learn from their mistakes. I Don't know if we can find it in your country but there is a nice French movie that tells this story. It's called "Merry Christmas"

Though such times may be rare, there are times when humanity's inate kindness and compassion shine bright. Bright enough to where, even if for only one day, one miserable day, it can even break through the Fog of War. Christmas Day, 1914 was one of those times

There is a documentary that came out a week or two ago, about this. I can't remember the channel, but you can look up The Christmas Truce, and it will be with several different videos. This on is a little over an hour long. There's also a 10 part series on WW1 on a channel called Timeline. Go to the created playlists and scroll through. The thumbnail image is of Franz Ferdinand. His uniform is a shade of blue, with medals and a red and gold sash. Hopefully that's enough info, if you choose to check it out. I have watched it several times. This song hits the feels hard.

Amanda Webster Sabaton is a band who sing of different historical events or people; the song is based on the true story of the spontaneous Christmas truce of 1914, yes it’s during the first year of World War One, at that time called The Great War, where in different locations across the trenches, the German, English, Scottish and French soldiers lay down their weapons and came together in peace and harmony in honour of Christmas. Sadly, did not last nor was repeated, till after 1918.

I was wondering if you could ever do a video on the song Hold On by Good Charlotte. It's an anti-suicide song that was written in response to a lot of young fans of Good Charlotte who were dealing with depression and were thinking of committing suicide. The message in the song is to let these young people know to keep holding onto life and things can get better. The music video has a segment in it that is from a suicide prevention group that has real people talking about either their children or other loved ones who had committed suicide and the pain that these people have had to deal with because of it. It's an absolutely powerful song and video that still makes me tear up thinking about it, even as I'm writing these words right now. I hope that you could possibly do a video on this song and music video if it's not too problematic for you Amanda. Thank you so so much for everything that you have been doing and I wish you nothing but continuous success into the future.
