Life On Mars is a piece of Art if you ask me. The lyrics are amazing. Every individual line seems abstract, but if you put them together, it's a pretty consistent story. Still gives me goosebumps aft er all these years. The video is great too.

I'm so delighted that you have featured Bowie on your channel. He is one of my all-time favourite artists from when I was a boy. And Hunky Dory is my favourite album of his. The track I love the most is Oh! You Pretty Things (another Rick Wakeman driven song), with Life on Mars? coming a close second. Bowie is wonderfully creative and his deep cuts are often as good or better than his hits.

This was an unexpected surprise today my friend! I love David Bowie. He’s got quite the discography. I honestly don’t know Brandon just how you’re going to afford the carrots!!🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🐇 The song I’d love you to hear is “Space Oddity”,but you’ll need to wait for ‘60s week. I do recommend “Ziggy Stardust” and “Suffragette City” from ‘72 and “Heroes” from ‘77. I’ve seen Trevor Bolder (RIP) twice before when he played bass for Uriah Heep.

Like so much Bowie music. Some great songs, including these two. ‘Life on Mars’ is one of my fav’s. And yes, the great Rick Wakeman features too. He was a member of the Strawbs at this time. He also played on the Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’ too. He guested for so many Bands and Artists over the years. The beautiful piano on Cat Stevens’ ‘Morning Has Broken’. He even featured on a Elton John Album too. 🎶❤️🎶

@@retroreactions.... here's one for ya honey...1966, I'm 6, the Beatles are in full swing and Liverpool was booming with tourists wanting to see "where it all began" my older brother, Thomas, 16 and me would go "down town" at the weekend, get on the ferry, because the Americans loved Gerry and the Pacemakers as well, and we would go back and forth across the Mersey, Thomas, "hustling" me to the tourists 😳 he had me singing Beatles songs, all things Merseybeat, (there was a lot of Liverpool bands, they became known collectively as the Merseysound) and sea shanty songs as you might know Liverpool was a dockers city, I or rather, my 16 year old manager would make a small fortune, I would get a huge bag of sweets, donuts and a "floppy 45" out of it, (we had booths by the Liver building, like photo booths, but you could record yourself singing and the floppy would magically appear out of the slot, a "disposable" 45rpm single that was as thin as a ciggie paper which you could play when you got home on the "radiogram" 🤣🤣🤣) me, wailing my way through Ferry Across The Mersey, by Gerry and the Pacemakers was a favourite of mine 🙄 you should give it a go. It sums up the city 👍 it was a fun time back then, God knows how much Thomas made, but he was very popular with his mates and "the girls" put it that way..❤️

The first stanza of Life on Mars, where David's voice is unadorned and sounding rather vulnerable, bears a slight resemblance to the voice of another David, his namesake Davy Jones of the Monkees. Fun fact: Bowie's birth name is Jones and he took on the stage name Bowie to avoid confusion with the similarly-named Monkee.

That was Bowie on sax BTW. This is fantastic early Bowie...one of my favorites is "Life on Mars?" Wakeman (in a KZfaq video) talks about how David came to him with these songs in a tape.....and after hearing the demos he JUMPED at the chance to play with him on Hunky Dory - they were so good. Later in many other albums, Bowie has Mike Garson who I think is better than Wakeman. For something different, try the songs Aladdin Sane and Lady Grinning Soul in your early Bowie journey....the piano by Garson will blow you away!

...David was very much into the cultural wave of space exploration, that shook us all then, with the first moon landing, and Kubrick's legendary '2001 - Space Odyssey' movie, and 'Life on Mars' fits in there - his most famous, and I think best homage to the theme, and also indeed that movie, was his song 'Space Oddity'. I've heard both songs many a time across the decades.... 2 subtle delights for me: 1) Changes - the first 4 piano notes are all of a different flavour, preparing you for a journey of change, where you never know what might come next... sublime... 2) Life on Mars - right at the end there are these few distinct drum bangs - an homage to 'Thus spoke Zarathustra', the main theme of Kubrick's movie...

According to Ken Scott (producer) what you're hearing is take 2 of the orchestral recording. At the end of the first take a phone in a room off the studio rang for the first time in years. The voice you hear is Mick Ronson, who was conducting, about to go into a massive meltdown as the first take was perfect. The second take ended a little earlier than the first and the phone ending was left on the tape. Mick did the orchestral arrangement, I think it was his first one, legend says he wrote it out of his head onto paper without an instrument present.

My Way isn't from Frank Sinatra. It's from a French singer, Claude François, called “Comme d'habitude” in French. It seems to be the song who got the most covers. Many Americans think it's an American song, but no… it's a French originally. By the way Bowie did a beautiful cover from another French song : Amsterdam from Jacques Brel. It's worth a listen. Not very famous but a really powerful song. I love Bowie's version over the original.

Here's a fun fact for ya! Rick Wakeman was offered two jobs on the same late Summer day in 1971, one with Bowie's touring band, and one with Yes. The rest is Yes history! (Check out the Wiki page for the Yes album, "Fragile".) Bowie was a freakin' genius, truly in a class by himself, IMO. Even though I am 70 and grew up with him, I was a relative late-comer to his catalog, except for the radio hits, which I always loved, until around 2005 when youtube first went live. I did a deep dive then, and then another deeper dive when he passed. Also, I find it ironic somehow that when David passed, we had just lost Chris Squire less than a year before!!! Both of their deaths hit me super hard, harder than I would have expected. Chris was my favorite bassist (although it's hard to choose), Yes was my 2nd favorite band, and I had only fairly recently come to really LOVE David's music over the prior 10 years or so. David can be an acquired taste, but he's always offered up something great for just about any potential listener!! I'm really enjoying your vids, Brandon!

Bowie usually did his own backing vocals. But he sometimes had Ronson and many others that are really famous in the background, not only singing, but playing. Thank you..Life on Mars is definitely in my top ten of best pieces of music of any genre..anywhere..anytime. So glad that Rick was involved in this..proves to me that there are connections in music that I am mysteriously drawn to. As for its meaning… hmm.. a definite “fish out of water” vibe that almost certainly is a comment on life in early 70s U.K. It also was part inspiration for an excellent U.K. drama by the same name which, was lost in translation big time when it was remade for US television. Essentially a VERY British song..addressing very contemporary issues. Sorry if that sounds a bit cryptic… happy to go away and think about that.

Wakeman was the go-to keyboard player back then. Everybody wanted him on their records, because he was not only one of the best keyboard players in the world but because he was a trained musician (the Royal College of Music) and could play anything with ease. In fact, Wakeman was thrown out of the College because he was spending most of his time in the studio doing session work, instead of studying. He was earning a lot of money for such a young man. And talking of age, it's still incredible to think that when Wakeman and Yes recorded classics like "Fragile" and "Close to the Edge" they were all only in their early twenties. Amazing.

@@retroreactions.... i have seen them do it live and it's a crowd pleaser. micky said he wrote it after attending a party in england with the beatles,so your assumption was right. it was recorded around the time of the beatles sgt. pepper era. micky said the title "randy scose git" is an english term that loosely translates as a "horny liverpudlian putz" lol. glad you liked it.

I'm sure it's way out of my channel window (1970-1999), but I can listen to it on my own for sure! Thanks

Great, at that time they were retro songs for me, both singles by Hunky Dory; merci for your good information including the guest musicians ❤. I'm happy if you proceed somewhat chronologically, DB and his fellow musicians in particular had their most creative phase in the 70s. My first single was Space Oddity, UK no.1, the predecessor of Changes. Life On Mars was not released as a single in Central Europe until 1973, UK no.3; my first album Ziggy Stardust. PS I don't like Let's Dance and China Girl. His uniformed disco rhythm annoys me, reminds me of a pproching army, regardless of the artist, e.g. also with Led Zeppelin, there more hard rock uniformly with some short songs of the later phase.

I love Bowie's "Cat People", but it seems there's not a single song used in a Quentin Tarantino flick I don't love! ❤ 🎶🎸🎧🎹🥁🎷🔥
