John Lennon co-wrote this song and is singing some background vocals.

Lennon may have been given a co-writing credit but his contribution was limited to proposing the word “aim” which Bowie changed to “fame”.

This really was ahead of its time and it definitely predicted a lot of aspects of 80s music. But it still had that mid-70s special kind of vibe to it as well, before all the technology exploded.

Bowie was one of a kind and so is his music. No other artist was making music like this! Sorely missed!! *I was in the 5th grade when this song came out and we were doing "the bump" to this song!! Anyone remember that dance? LOL

I was never really a big Bowie fan, as I was into a different genre of music. However, over the years I've come to appreciate him and song like this and Space Oddity, among others. Nice to see someone hearing this for the first time. Enjoying your channel! ✌🏻💀

This should be interesting. And I think John Lennon of the Beatles collaborated with Elton John on this. They hung out sometimes apparently.

Yes! John Lennon had some of the song writing credits and he is singing the falsetto “fame”. I don’t think Elton John was involved, but I could be wrong.

Wow! I never knew John co-wrote & did background vocals. 😂...This was performed live on soul train & the dancers were killin it! 😊 Please react to that. I'm from the 70's & when I watched it I was like wtf? Who is this white dude? It was different & a little weird, but I loved it! This is how David was introduced to me. I'd never seen or heard anything like this. Amazing

This was the last song on the Young Americans album. Bowie recorded it in his R&B/Soul phase. Definitely check out the song Young Americans, Fascination, Right and Somebody Up There Likes Me, they're all really funky!

He reinvented himself so many times -- one of the first to present as androgynous, to wear makeup, costume, assume different personas for his musical style changes. True artist, and apparently a really lovely down-to-earth human -- Changes, Suffragette City, The Jean Genie, Starman, Space Oddity...

David Bowie calls this plastic soul. "Modern Love" - "Golden Years" - "Young Americans" - all great.

There is not one ounce of funk in Modern Love which was written 8 years later after Bowie’s plastic soul period.

The 80s weren't really funky. It got watered down. 60s and 70s had heavy funk, and you can go back to James Brown, P-Funk, Maceo Parker, Ohio Players, etc. This song had that grit...
