I worked for him in Adelaide. He was 1 of the few performers I have met that dispite his extravagance, he was soo down to earth that off stage he was a regular guy

Jayy, this is a long, deep rabbithole!! I'd definitely suggest "Young American" next if you like his groove - his career spanned decades, and he's sorely missed. Bowie's work is so varied; take a listen to just a few: "Rebel Rebel," "Modern Love," "Let's Dance," "Life On Mars," "Heroes," "Changes," ... the list goes on!!

Bowie was constantly evolving and growing. I saw him twice live and his shows were as much about performance art as music. Some suggestions: All the Young Dudes, Space Oddity, Suffragette City, Changes. There's also a really fun video of David and Mick Jagger doing Dancing in the Street. Enjoy the Bowie rabbit hole!

@@JulioLeonFandinho The whole album is not funk/soul. That's two completely different styles of music. The Young Americans album is R&B, Soul influenced Rock. The only song I remember on the album with any funk sound to it is Fame.

@@debjorgo funk and soul aren't completely different styles, they are completely related, James Brown invented funk as a variation of the soul music he was doing in the 50s, usually considered as rythm and blues, because it was bluesy but with a strong sense of rythm and dancing. I'm calling it 'soul' although the name wasn't being used in the 50s, but you can't deny that artists like James Brown or Jackie Wilson were doing soul, with another name, in the beginning. And then Brown created funk, which is soul music with a less melodic element and a more simplified song structure... Taking this in consideration, it's impossible to deny that what Bowie was playing was soul/funk, because it had elements from those styles, although never applied in a purist way, because Bowie was playing his own version of soul/funk

@@JulioLeonFandinho I agree with most of what you're saying except your conclusion about Young Americans. Take the song Young Americans. There is no 'chunka chunka' funk sound to it at all. It is all smooth r&b pop. I haven't listened to the album for a while. What other song on the album do you say is funky?

It is actually ex-Beatle John Lennon helping on the backing vocals on this track. The squeeky high fame voive at the end where it starts real high and goes low had some tape speed manipulation involved. You would def enjoy the title track of the album this comes from. It is called 'Young Americans'

Loads of great soul/funk musicians playing here. Luther Vandross was one of the background singers. Musicians from Sly and the Family Stone, Isley Brothers, James Brown and more played on the album. And John Lennon was on this.

"Young Americans," "Modern Love," "Space Oddity," "Let's Dance," anything from the Earthling album would be a totally new reaction because nobody ever does more than his classics. But the best is "Life On Mars"--the video with his shocking orange hair tuft and light blue leisure suit and some of the most amazing makeup ever put on a human. The song is emotional and beautiful, and he is visually striking with the same beauty and finesse. He funks, he rocks, he grooves, he jams, and he even bops. I don't believe in UFOs, but i'm positive Bowie was extra-terrestrial. Or super-terrestrial. His mind and his heart will win you over. And his next-level fashion/style sense shifts with his moods, so you kinda get an all-in-one experience. :)

Great song choice - like others have said, the Bowie rabbit hole is deep indeed, and full of incredible music. 'Young Americans' is a definite must, and for more of a sleeper hit, 'Cat People (Putting Out Fire)' is awesome. Happy New Year!

My hubby just bought me his the last album he recorded before he died. I became a fan of his in the 70s when he invented his alter ego, Iggy Stardust. I used to dress like him, hairstyle and all when I went to see him in concert or I should say concerts! Unbelievable talent! I cried when he died, still haven't quite got over his loss.

Saw David perform "Diamond Dog" he never wanted to repeat himself. Even though you knew his voice, his music was different everytime. That is what the great ones do. Its called ART:-) He was an artist for sure.

Yes great song! Can’t tell you how many times I danced to this back in the day. I think he was saying he didn’t take fame that seriously. David was very talented, actor, songwriter, musician, singer. He was married to Somalian fashion model, actress, designer, cosmetics creator and business woman Iman. He passed in 2016.

Young Americans as an album was David's take on soul and funk music. This song is on the funk end. The other voice was John Lennon from The Beatles, who also played the acoustic chords at the beginning. The other songs on the album have Luther Vandross and Robin Clark on backing vocals, besides Across the Universe, which is a cover of The Beatles and also has John Lennon on rhythm guitar and backing vocals. At this point, you probably realize exactly how big David had to be considering the people he was working with. I'm looking forward to more. Excellent reaction! 🙂

David Bowie has so many sounds... So many wonderful songs... He is still relevant and will always be... He was like Nirvana in his days first starting. He had a crazier wardrobe than Elton. He was what Alternative was to the 80’s. Had hits in the 90’s and was still doing music in Y2K... He basically found his calling and blessed us all with a wonderful sound that I refer to as Ear Candy.... David Bowie is Amazing and God Bless him and his family....

this was from the Young Americans album.....what bowie called his 'plastic soul' phase. plastic my ass. INCREDIBLE album. This and the title cut were hits, but, check out the whole album . it is fantastic, start to finish. if i was going to suggest one song i'd say Fascination. that was one that Luther vandross brought down, bowie rewrote the lyrics and they recorded it. incredibly good.

When this Song came on EVERYBODY got on the dance floor whether you had someone to dance with or not. If you were alone, you danced to the middle of the floor, and jammed with everyone else. Wonderful memories!

I got to see this man play in a nightclub in Toronto, that held just over a thousand people, in 95, and I was less than twenty feet from him. I've been to many, many shows in my lifetime, but never had I been so emotionally charged and felt more privileged than that night. My all time favorite artist. His death crushed me.

It's only right that you react to the b-side Right. It's an incredible song. Very funky. I also personally recommend you check out the songs All the Madmen from 1970 and As the World Falls Down from 1986. You'll hear some music on both sides of what you've heard that way. Each album is quite incredible, and you'll get a different sound on them all. There are around 30. I'm glad you've decided to check David Bowie out.

The last time I got to see him live he opened with this song, which has the last line "What's your name?" and ended with Look Back in Anger, which has the first line, "You know who I am, he said." He was always so clever, cerebral, heady... I absolutely loved him. He always really made you think.
