In 1971, Deep Purple decided to produce and record their album Machine Head in Montreux. The group was also scheduled to record at the Montreux Casino, shortly after Frank Zappa performed. During Zappa's concert, the venue caught fire and reduced the Casino to ashes. (Funky Claude) Nobs saved several young people who had hidden in the casino, thinking they would be sheltered from the flames. Nobs, who had served as a volunteer fireman, knew that the casino was not actually a safe place and acted immediately to get them out. This act earned him a mention (in the line "Funky Claude was running in and out pulling kids on the ground") in the song "Smoke on the Water", which is about the incident. Also, on the inner liner of the original album, Nobs' picture was the only one labeled with a name other than those of the band members themselves.

This recording is a remastered version with a different guitar solo than the original, and a lot of added imbellishments. The original version is, in my opinion, much MUCH better. The live version from Made in Japan is particularly amazing. Next Deep Purple live version of Child in Time. It illustrates much better why Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin were the fore-fathers of British hard rock and influenced everything that came after.

This is the version from the 1997 "25th anniversry edition" which has a bonus CD with remixed versions of most of the songs. "Smoke On The Water" tells the story of the Montreux casino burning down during a Frank Zappa gig after a fan shot a flare into the straw ceiling, after which Deep Purple, who were supposed to record their next album (Machine Head) at said casino. Claude Nobbs ("funky" Claude in the song) found them a new venue to record in the shape of the Montreux Grand Hotel, which was closed for the winter and had no heating and terrible access. It meant the Rolling Stones recording truck couldn't get through the main gates and the lads had to go through some shenanigans to go and listen to what they recorded...

This was their biggest hit and was everywhere back in the day, and is based on a true story of a major fire during a recording session in Montreux. Check out "Lazy" or "Child in Time". The lyrics recount a true story. Deep Purple were scheduled to record tracks for what would become the Machine Head album (from which the song comes) at the Montreux Casino on the shores of Lake Geneva. The complex was going to shut down for its annual winter break and Deep Purple had rented the Rolling Stone Mobile Studio to record with. The night before, the band was attending a concert by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention when a fan shot a flare gun in to the ceiling of the theater Zappa's band was performing in, catching the rattan covering on fire, which quickly spread eventually burning most of the casino complex. The band were forced to find another recording venue, which they did a couple days later and they were able to complete most of the tracks for Smoke On The Water and some tracks for other songs on the album. Beside Frank Zappa, the Rolling Stones are mentioned ("rolling truck stones thing, referring to the mobile studio), as is the now late Claude Nobs. the director of the Montreux Jazz Festival (Funky Claude) who assisted several concert attendees in evacuating the building. Zappa and the Mothers lost most of their equipment in the fire. The chorus "Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky" refers to what the members of Deep Purple saw after they'd evacuated to the other side of the lake, smoke rolling across the surface of the lake and the flames from the casino rising in to the air. The opening riff is fairly simple and can be played with barre chords in a pinch, although many music shops often (jokingly or not) ban people from playing it as they've heard it thousands of times. Part of the heaviness of Deep Purple's sound come from the interplay between Ritchie Blackmore's guitar and Jon Lord's organ, often playing the same chords, filling out and adding depth to the sound.

Nice one. Just today it came to my mind how like 40 years ago as a boy I loved and listened over and over to John Lennon "Jealous Guy" which I had recorded with my tape recorder from the radio. But, as I'm native German and was only in my first or second year of English then, I didn't understand most of the lyrics, and thought the title of the song was "Yellow Sky" - only years later the scales fell from my eyes (or rather ears in this case) when I reencountered the song...

Did you live in Victoria (or Langford), BC, Canada at the time? That was a parody song recorded by a local fellow named "Langford Man" for a charity cause in the '80s, and promoted on FM 100.3 The Q, a Victoria radio station. You can find it online. I don't know if Langford Man originated the parody lyric or just capitalized on it. Funny misheard lyrics, right up there with Dylan's "The ants are my friends, they're blowin' in the wind. The ants are a-blowin' in the wind." I still sing that every time I clean out the woodshed.

true story. that's what we've been told all these years. through trial and tribulation they ended up recording their most iconic album of their careers. and one of the best albums in Rock History. rap used to sound all the same to me. until i started to unpack the lyrics and the beat. it is ALL so good. i listened to only rap for over 20 years. and Punk Rock. but now i am going back to the old stuff from my life as a teen. and i found you two listening to my music and doing your thing. i fell in love with you guys and i try to watch as often as i can. (btw, Deep Purple Machine Head is the very first tape i ever stole for a girl in high school. it was the last time. she took it and walked away. i said never again. and i have stuck to that.) hahaha

Deep Purple really hit big in the early 70s I was in the Air Force at the time and me and 8 of my buddies lived off base and we all had these huge stereo systems with reel to reels and turntables we would sit around drinking Boone's Farm wine, beer and smoke a lot of weed those were the days

The "mobile" was the a mobile recording truck which was owned by the Rolling Stones. It was essentially a traveling studio. Deep Purple wanted to record at a hall in Switzerland to capture it's sound on record, on Lake Geneva. Frank Zappa played a show the night before they were all supposed to set-up and someone in the audience fired a flare gun, causing the hall to catch fire. The album "Machine Head" was the result, and they had to move to a wing of an abandoned hotel to finish the record.

You know this track is rooted in a true story? They went to Montreux in Switzerland to record. The version off the Made In Japan album is often said to be the best recording .

Whole Machine Head album is awesome. Would love to hear Brad analyze “Space Truckin’” and Lex jam to “Lazy”. Didn’t even mention “Highway Star”. But agree with lots of others that “Child in Time” would be a fun reaction to watch.

You're so right, a lot of rock does sound different- Deep Purple were that emergence of British hard rock heavily based on blues so it has a lot of blues feel whilst still rocking hard with riffs. It was a bit unusual for a hard rock band to have such a lead keyboard sound- Jon Lord also liked to play a bit of Back mixed into some of the rock. Deep Purple were a British band, the sound at the end was Jon playing the hammond organ.

What you guys thought was a harmonica was probably John Lord banging out a solo on his keyboard. And the guitar riff is the stuff of legends…just don’t play it when you are the Guitar store--you will get the evil eye from the staff….or worse.

I think the best guitar riffs inspire people to start playing guitar … doesn’t matter if they’re simple or complex riffs. This one must be top 10 for inspiring new guitar players. Such a great riff.

It's weird... I've never heard this version... I'm sure it's not the final or official one, but the solo sounds waaay more like Ritchie than the original one. I guess it got refined to it's final version, Wich to me is one of the most iconic solos ever

It's from a double disc anniversary edition of the album. 1st cd is the original album. 2nd cd is Roger Glover's remix which has loose starts and longer fadeouts. This was a lost guitar solo restored for the bonus disc.

IN MY ORPHANAGE WHEN I WAS A KID THE ORPHANAGE DIRECTOR HAD A PRETTY GOOD MUSIC SYSTEM, SO A NEIGHBOR WHO LIVED WITH HIS PARENTS AND DIDN'T LIVE IN THE ORPHANAGE WOULD COME AND LISTEN TO HIS DEEP PURPLE CASSETTES ON THE MUSIC SYSTEM. THOSE ARE MY CHILDHOOD MEMORIES OF DEEP PURPLE. THANK YOU, AND GOOD NIGHT.
