Not many folks mention this one song that Dolly wrote in 1977, another example of her masterful story telling. I was 10 yrs old when I first heard it. It was one of the first songs to ever make me cry. Now 47 years later & even after countless times of hearing it, that darn song can still bring me to tears. Please, please, PLEASE check out "Me and Little Andy." I've only seen a small handful of KZfaqrs react to that song & each one of them has loved it. My favorite Dolly tunes are Coat of Many Colors, Joshua, 9 to5, and Islands in the Stream - a duet she did with Kenny Rogers, which was a huge hit for both of them. Oh, and it was written by The Bee Gees! 🤩

This is Dolly's favorite song that she's written because its her most autobiographical and most personal of stories.

YES! It makes sense that rappers and hip hoppers find themselves relating to country music. It’s about telling stories of real life. When Dolly sings about growing up poor she is singing truth.

She's a prolific song writer that has hundreds of songs. She knew early on that owning the rights to her own music would be more profitable for the long run. Many artists of the time when she started had the music labels owning the artist's music. She made a ton of money, about $10 million just from the royalties to her being the song writer for "I Will Always Love You" when Whitney Houston had a major hit with a cover version of Dolly's song.

Dolly writes all her music and this is her favorite.. She grew up dirt poor in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee.. 12 brothers and sisters It's her life. You can't mess with life stories.. and I I'm sure it's the same for rap music. Don't mess with life stories..

I remember seeing Dolly on early TV variety shows as a kid. She had an amazing voice, her songs were kinda simple but hugely powerful. But like many early female artist , she had to have a "gimmick ' to break out into the higher echelons of the music industry. Dolly portrayed a slightly simple-minded woman with a HUGE stage presence...with her magnificent sized breasts! You might have noticed she is well gifted in the videos you've reacted to. But those are of Dolly after she had a kinda substantial reduction in her breast size. Once she started having a lot of her Country music cross over into pop and easy listening radio she dropped the "slightly simple-minded" bleached blonde persona. But she still had her large breast. They were part of her "persona" and often talked about, as one could, during appearances on Late Night, with Johnny Carson. Or the daytime TV talk shows like Merv Griffin. It wasn't until after she had the title roll in the movie "9 to 5" that she had "them" reduced to a more manageable size. Early musical careers was a real bitch toward the ladies. There's a number of very well written and produced documentaries about what if was like for them, to get their big break, and finally succeed in getting their songs on regular rotation.

I love your perspective and the level of thought you bring to this reaction. Re: the approach to storytelling in music having so many similarities between country music and hip hop ... I agree. Perhaps because while hip hop and country come from two different cultures, those cultures once existed side by side for a loooooong time. The hundreds of years that black Americans spent in rural communities before the Great Migration took many to the cities in the 20th century. The musical forms of country and hip hop are cousins, so to speak. Hip hops retains that long memory of form and storytelling despite the urban geographical shift and being more recent, chronologically. You have very sharp ears. :-) Keep up the awesome reactions!

The core of country, r&b and hip hop is the soul and the human condition. It’s nice to see your reaction in recognizing that and it would be nice if we could see that everyday in each other; that no matter the background we have common ground at our very core just because we are human.

This song is older than me by a lot and while y'all might find it hard to believe,. as an East, Tennessean, I can tell you my own Mom who is around Dolly's age and from another mountain co. grew up without indoor plumbing. This was southern Appalachia. A lot has changed but a lot hasn't. But back then especially most everyone was poor and even today it's still one of the poorest in the US.

You asked about Country Music…many years ago, my father would ride me on his shoulders, into bed and I would ask him to sing me songs. One song that stays with me even after all these years is “When the Works All Done This Fall” and I looked it up. Marty Robbins sang it but the earlier version was from 1930 and the artist appears to have been Michael Martin Murphey. Some others you might want to react to are “Teddy Bear” by Red Sovine, “Convoy” by C.W. McCall. Another would be “That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine”…sung by Everly Brothers, but I don’t know the original. Enjoy these earliest rap artists😊.

Hip Hop was heavily influenced by country music when it was in its infancy, and now the reverse is true and country music is taking a lot of influence from Hip-Hop. Dolly is a national treasure and the epitome of the American dream. A true rags to riches story. Yes, she wrote this song and it's a true story from her youth. She's written over 3000 songs in her career. Beautiful, funny, cute, and sometimes a little irreverent, but always humble, Dolly is just an amazing human being. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year despite her originally turning it down since she's not a rock star. But the fans spoke and she finally accepted. Now she says that she's writing some rock songs so no one can call her a fraud. Gotta love that charm.

Many of Dolly’s first hits were about her life. This is my favourite Dolly song followed by Apple Jack because Dolly knew how to have fun and who cared about her. She really didn’t understand they had nothing because she had a great family. She couldn’t wait to grow up and have big blonde hair with lots of makeup. She thought the ladies of the night were the wealthy people and that is how she chose to look to be a singer. Somehow she still added class to that look back then. She is a special lady who gives so much of her money away to children that have nothing. Thank you.

Check the web for additional information. For her New Album “Rock Star”. Dolly got the who is who in rock music. All proceeds go to charity. There are 21 collaboration’s & 9 originals by Dolly.

Dolly Parton is a country legend who has been recording & writing songs since the 60's. Love her storytelling songs the most like "Jolene" & "Coat Of Many Colors". She has had so many hits such as "I Will Always Love You", "Yellow Roses", "My Tennessee Mountain Home", "9 To 5", "Here You Come Again" etc. She did a lot of great duets with Kenny Rogers & Porter Wagoner. She also collaborated with Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris & they released a few "Trio" albums.

This is my favorite Dolly song and is also the song that made me fall in love with Dolly Parton when I was introduced to her at 6 years old. I will never forget listening to the record my Great Aunt gave me over and over again. I’m pretty sure it was the only record I ever owned bc cassette tapes came out around that same time. Here are few more of my favorite Dolly songs. - 9 to 5 - Here You Come Again - Islands in the Stream (Duet w/Kenny Roger’s) *this one was written by Barry Gibbs and has been sampled in Hip Hop - The Sweetest Gift (w/ Linda Ronstandt & Emmylou Harris) - Here You Come Again - He’s Alive - She’s an Eagle When She Flies - When I Get Where I’m Going (duet w/Brad Paisley) - Old Friends (duet w/Kenny Rogers) - Rockin Years (Duet w/Ricky Van Shelton) - Me and Little Andy As others have mentioned, they made an excellent award winning TV movie a few years back based on this song called Coat of Many Colors also. It would be awesome for you to react to it since you like learning about the artists. Dolly and her siblings made sure it was an extremely accurate portrayal of their childhood.

There are many great songs by Dolly that you might react to, some she wrote and some she covered. Among my suggestions: Light of a Clear Blue Morning, 9 to 5, Sandy's Song, Little Sparrow (Live in London wearing a blue dress), Down from Dover, Peace Train cover with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Here I Am, My Blue Tears (sung with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris as a super group called Trio), Hello God, World on Fire, Bygones, and covers from Rockstar: Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Purple Rain.

This story is told so well in this song that it was made into a TV movie that plays every once in a while. It shows a lot about how poor her family was in her childhood. That could be something you react to. I absolutely love your reactions with your song/artist research every time. At first I wasn't happy about how long your videos are, but ss many other reaction channels say many times, "let me/us know in the comments" which is pointless because nobody is going to see their reaction to those comments.

It's been said that country is the white man's blues, and blue are the black man's country. This makes sense as they both flow out of the same Scots Gael and Irish folk traditions, but bend in different directions across the 19th and 20th centuries.

As a non christian, I think there's a ton of common story telling. Most country and hip hop artists tend to be christian. So there's a common vernacular. And if you're talking about structure, we're talking mid tempo 4/4 with an ideal around rhymes and story telling. Seems not that surprising to me.
