Hard candy encompasses a large array of inexpensive sweet treats like candy canes and lollipops. The phrase "hard candy Christmas" refers to a time when families who did not have much money could only afford to give hard candy or penny candy to their children at Christmas. The hard candy metaphor suggests that life can simultaneously be hard and sweet.

@@aimeerisch4059 Ansolutely ribbon candy! It was pretty, but who enjoyed eating it?! The song basically says every Christmas in our lives can’t be chocolate covered cherry cordials. Sometimes you just a box of hard candy. But you find your favorites in the box, mine were the strawberry filled, and enjoy them.

The thing about Dolly is she never forgot where she came from. She has a humble and loving soul. You are so right she is a gift from God I can't even imagine how many lives she has touched.

Dolly just was awarded 3 Guinness Book of World Records for her music and recordings. She also personally donated. One Million Dollars to help develop the COVID vaccines.

Isn't that incredible?!?!? Three Guinness Book of World Records for Dolly. (1) The record for most decades on the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart by a female artist (seven decades). (2) The record for most No. 1 hits on the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart by a female artist (25 No. 1 hits). (3) She broke her own record for most hits on the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart by a female artist (109 hits). And she won her first-ever Emmy Award a few months ago for her Netflix Christmas Special (Outstanding Television Movie).

Her Imagination Library will provide a book a month for needy children from birth to the age of five. For just a $25.00 donation, you can provide the books for one child for an entire year. When my aunt died last year and we couldn't have a funeral, I made a donation in her name in lieu of flowers because she had been a reading tutor for many years.

A lot of "Rock and Roll" fans will dismiss county music out of hand. I did when I was younger, but I came to realize that County and Rock (and Jazz as well, truth to tell) share a common ancestor: The Blues. Dolly is one of the best songwriters as well as being a fantastic vocalist.

Idk how a song can be so simultaneously sad and uplifting; I suppose it's just the magic of Dolly! This song gets more and more real as you age and lose loved ones, go through life changes, etc. that change the way Christmas looks and feels. But her endless positivity and gentleness is healing!

Hard Candy Christmas cones from a movie soundtrack that she starred in called “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” The studio version of this live song is a bit more melancholy, but perhaps even more beautiful. It’s a great uplifting message for people who struggle with loneliness or sadness at the holidays. She is one of the best songwriters and singers of all time. Really nothing she can’t do. Always making the world better. Y’all should review her pandemic song “When Life Is Good Again” and all of her hits from the 70s when she stepped away from country a bit and was singing pop/easy listening/ top 40. Several hits.

I bought this album as soon as it was released in 83 or 84.... and listen to it over and over every Christmas. You're right.. EVERY SONG is a dandy.

This was also a movie title. You might want to check that out. Dolly was a musician, who went to a cabin in the outback of beyond in the Tennessee Hills, of course. A handful of kids ran away and wound up in her care, then Kenny Roger showed up. The kids played matchmaker, Kenny played Santa. Did the couple get together and adopt the kids? Maybe. That came out in 1986 or '88 and I don't think I've seen it since. Give it a go, you might like it. Where did Dolly come from? An older singer named Porter Wagoner had his own show on TV around her home town maybe. He was famous for a song (The Carroll County Accident, one you might like in fact) They had duets on the show, some written by him and some by her, some by others. 'Christina' was one. 'Rich folks living in a Poor folks Town' was another. No romantic stuff going on, it was all in the song, but he took it as an affront to him when she wanted to go solo. One tried to sue the other, but they finally made up long before he died.

I remember asking my father what this song meant, “Hard Candy Christmas “ I was 12 maybe, he told me it was a reference to only having enough money that your family could only get you hard candy for Christmas. I might not have had a “Hard Candy Christmas “ but I remember one Christmas that was hard on my parents. I remember I got a new winter jacket, Shoes, some clothes and a hunting knife. Compared to some of the other Christmas’s my family has had, this one was tight. It’s one of my favorite Christmas memories.... I remember that we all came together and shared time. I felt loved.

Dolly Parton has the PERFECT voice for singing Christmas songs - she sings like a silver bell! Among her many Christmas songs, I would also suggest you check out "Pretty Paper", "Holly Jolly Christmas (which I always sing as Holly Dolly), "You Are My Christmas" (which her brother, Randy, also sings on), "A Christmas to Remember", "Circle of Love", her versions of "Joy to the World" , "First Noel" & "O Little Town of Bethlehem" and her holiday duets with Kenny Rogers - "Christmas Without You", "With Bells On" & "The Greatest Love of All", as well as her duet with Michael Buble - "Cuddle up, Cozy Down Christmas". You know what? Y'all just need to have a two day Holiday Parton Party where you just react to Dolly's Christmas songs.

Dolly is the ultimate. In what way? In every way. Singer yep. Songwriter yep. Actor yep. Author yep. Philanthropist Oh Yep. As if that's not enough it was recently announced that Dolly now holds 3 Guiness World Records. Most decades on The US Hot Country Charts with 7, most songs on that chart to hit #1 by a female 25 and Dolly has held the record for most songs to make the US Hot Country Song Charts when last January her song Cuddle up, Cozy down Christmas became her 108th song on the charts. Oh btw she just broke that one herself with her 109th with her duet of Does he love you with reba McEntire. As for her generosity Dolly back in (I think) 2016 her foundation donated $1.000 a month for 6 months to families impacted by the Tenn. wildfires. Her Imagination Library literacy program has now donated over 1 million books to children and back in 2020 Dolly donated 1 million dollars to help fund the Covid battle and it was used in the research and finding the vaccines. That guys is our Dolly.

Dolly started singing on local radio at 10, recorded her first single Puppy Love at 13, travelled regularly to Nashville with her uncle Bill Owens, and a day after her highschool graduation moved to Nashville. She started off there as a songwriter for other artists. She got a big break by replacing the girl singer on The Porter Wagoner show (national), and after 7 years finally managed to go solo

My mom was a single mom in the 80's. A huge Dolly fan. We struggled to eat and pay the bills even with her 2 (sometimes 3) jobs. This song reminds me of her and our struggles then.

This song was written by composer and lyricist Carol Hall for the musical, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. In the movie version; Parton starred in, "Hard Candy Christmas" is originally sung by the girls in the brothel as they are preparing to leave. Parton sang the chorus.

This isn't really a Christmas song. It's from the movie Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and sung by Dolly (the madam) as the girls were being forced to leave. I think it's referring to the fact that they are sad to be leaving but at least they know they can still get by. Hard candy Christmas refers to not having the money to afford alot of presents but being happy with what you do have. Still, I am not complaining, it's a great song.

Agree, love the song and Dolly, but definitely not a Christmas song. It even loses the context and much of the emotion listening to it outside the scene from the movie I think. It's also somewhat different from the movie version. I think the movie version is better, but that just may be the emotion of the context in which it's sung. (BTW, fun movie too!).

Dolly moved to Nashville the very next morning after she graduated in 1964! She became a songwriter and did background vocals. 1967 she joined the Porter Wagonner tv show and the rest is HISTORY!! She actually recorded her FIRST record in 1955! Had her FIRST #1 record in 1970!!

She moved to Nashville the day after she graduated high school. She met her husband then also and they've been together since. But she got her break on the Porter Wagoner television show. She was ready to leave the show to have her own career. He didn't want her to go so she wrote I Will Always Love You for him. He agreed to let her go if he could produce that song.

The story behind that song is why it's a miracle that Whitney Houston was allowed to cover it. Elvis Presley wanted to cover it and Dolly turned him down.

@@robinmills8675 yeah the standard deal that Elvis's management offered was a 50/50 royalty split if you let Elvis record one of your songs, whether you recorded it first or not. A lot of people said screw you. The ones who didn't, like Mac Davis who wrote a couple of Elvis' big hits, did alright but could have done a lot better.

That was during a time when more families than not, had a hard candy Christmas. But I think the Appalachians were hit harder than most and families there had a very hard time of it. Many still are!

As someone who has written songs myself, I can only stand back and admire the lyrics of this tune. While Dolly is singing, the lyrics flow so smoothly, you feel if she is just having a conversation with you."Hard Candy Christmas" was originally written by Carol Hall and became popular in the Broadway musical The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas. In the film adaptation of the musical, Dolly Parton plays Miss Mona and is featured as a solo singer on the song's refrains.

Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean (born January 19, 1946) is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actress, author, businesswoman and humanitarian, known primarily for her work in country music. After achieving success as a songwriter for others, Parton made her album debut in 1967 with Hello, I'm Dolly, which led to success during the remainder of the 1960s (both as a solo artist and with a series of duet albums with Porter Wagoner), before her sales and chart peak came during the 1970s and continued into the 1980s. Parton's albums in the 1990s did not sell as well, but she achieved commercial success again in the new millennium and has released albums on various independent labels since 2000, including her own label, Dolly Records. Dolly started on a local Knoxville Tn. program called The Cass Walker Show it was an early morning show that came on at 6 am. She went to Nashville at 18 the day after she graduated high school. She then joined The Porter Wager Show as his singing partner and main draw. After a few years, she wanted to move on and wrote'' I will always love you '' to tell him she was leaving . She wrote "Jolene" on the same day as "I will always love you", Dolly said "that was a pretty good day.'Porter later sued Dolly over some song rights and won the case. Later he fell on hard times and was selling the rights to all his music, Dolly bought the song rights and gifted them back to him. She went to see him when he was on his death bed and sang "I will always love you to him. She has a scholarship program for the Severe County students, a program where every baby born in Tennessee can receive a book every month until they are 5 years old, she gave financial assistance to the Gatlingburg residents affected by the massive wildfire and has brought jobs and economic development to the area with her Dollywood theme park. "Christmas Time's A-Coming" is an old bluegrass tune by Bill Monroe. Many people have covered it over the years, but no one comes close to Dolly. Peace and love to everyone this holiday season.❤🎁

This song is so beautiful. It is rendered wonderfully in the movie "Best little whorehouse in Texas" with Dolly, Burt Reynolds, Jim Nabors. You really should see and listen to the version from the movie. It actually includes a group of ladies singing each line of the song. It makes more sense and sounds beautiful. Treat yourself to a wonderful movie. Also, her song "I will always love you" is performed in this movie. You would truly enjoy it. I guarantee it!

I worked with Dolly on a Women in Rock concert for Lifetime years ago. She is just as lovely, smart and funny as you think she is. She also could sing that effortlessly. My boss, a bad ass but cold as ice tv executive literally said Dolly changed her life with her effervescent personality 🙏🏻💕

I live an hour from Dollywood. She was born in the Great Smoky Mtns in Tennessee. You should research all that she has done for Tennessee. It's amazing

Dolly got her "Big Break" on the Porter Wagner TV Show, I think in the very early 1970's. She was actually billed as "The Girl Singer." When she was ready to go out on her own, she wrote and performed "I Will Always Love You" for him. He agreed to let her out of her contract only if he got to produce the song, giving him some of the money off it. Porter would later sue Dolly, claiming he was owed money from many of her early hits. They settled out of court. When Porter got in financial trouble, he was forced to sell his music catalog (he had been a huge country music star at one time) Dolly bought it. When Porter got back on his feet, he contacted Dolly about buying the rights to some of his songs back. Dolly told him, "You can have them all back for free." When Porter was dying, Dolly flew to see him with no one knowing, and sang "I Will Always Love You" one last time for him. There is a great "Drunk History" episode about this story.

Dolly's uncle drove her to a local radio show where she sang jingles for Cas Walker, a grocer. He took her to Nashville when she was 10 yrs old and managed to talk someone into letting Dolly sing. She left home the day she graduated and moved to Nashville. She had success with songwriting and a few little songs, but her career opportunity came when Porter Waggoner, who had the highest syndicated show at the time invited Dolly to be his featured "lady singer." With her talent, they say Dolly need Porter the first 3 years, but Porter needed Dolly the last 3. They became one of the most popular duo's of the time.

In 1967, at the age of 21, Dolly started out on the Porter Wagoner show. She sang many duets with Porter...I think they recorded about 13 albums together. She spent 7 years on the show. She wrote the song I Will Always Love You for Porter.

10 yrs old she was singing on a local TV show , her big break was with Porter Wagner (Legend) on his TV show I think she was 16? maybe just turned 18. I will always love you she wrote when she was leaving his show to go solo and sang it to him on her last show with him and nothing has stopped her ever. she wrote 9-5 while on set of that movie they needed a song and she wrote it on breaks she accompanied herself with her acrylic nails and it shows in the credits of that song as Dolly's Nails. Not even the Pandemic held her back she funded research for Vaccines and her foundation has given books to kids she built Dollywood to save her Home Town and employs everyone that wants/needs a job . she doesn't take No for an answer and who would ever say no to someone as Kind and as Brilliant a business woman as Dolly.

As to how Dolly got her start - she started performing on radio and TV as a child in East Tennessee. By age 10, she was a staple on local media. At 13, she recorded her first single and performed with Johnny Cash at the Grand Old Opry. Johnny taught her to follow her own instincts regarding her career. (She certainly did THAT.)

Dolly was a local star by the age of ten. She appeared regularly on a local grocer’s radio show, The Cas Walker Show. Then the day after her high school graduation she moved to Nashville. First really big break was as “the girl singer” (and songwriter) on The Porter Wagoner Show. Then she went off on her own and, though Porter tried, nothing could stop her ascension. She her light shine and became the legend we all love today.

Along with "Do I ever cross your mind" my two favorite Dolly songs. This song was part of the soundtrack of the movie "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas", and is sung at a pretty sad, relatively speaking, moment in the film. It was a comedy smash hit. Dolly came to fame as part of the Porter Wagoner show in the 60's.

My absolute favorite part of this is the line "I'm barely getting through tomorrow...", where she manages to stretch the word "tomorrow" to four (or possibly even five) syllables. So beautiful. She does the same thing on the record version of this song.

15 hr. road trip? Well, hop into the car with a stack of her cd's and head on over to Pigeon Forge/ Gatlinburg area and go to DOLLYWOOD. There you can hear all of her songs throughout the park as well as other bluegrass/mountain music from that area.

Dolly's uncle Bill Owens was a musician and when she was still a little girl he would take her around to radio stations and stage venues and record companies. She cut a record at age 13 and sang at the Grand Old Opry the same year. She graduated High School in 1964 and moved to Nashville. Her earliest success was as a song writer and many big time performers sang and recorded songs by Dolly during this period, some of which charted. In 1966 she signed with Monument Records and recorded several non-country singles because the company didn't think her voice was suited to Country. Then she sand backup on a Country song that charted and the company finally relented and let her record "Dumb Blonde" which charted at number 24, followed by "Something Fishy" which charted at number 17, and her career really began taking off from there. So...no one really discovered Dolly, except maybe her uncle Bill, and maybe some credit to Fred Foster who wrote Dumb Blonde, who Dolly has said was someone who believed in her and helped her. She really eased into the business by getting to know people early on and keeping at it as she and her talent matured and she finally had that big breakthrough. She joined Porter Wagoner in 1967 with whom she experienced a lot of growth and success but since she was already well on her way I don't think he should be credited with her discovery.

I'll say it again, Dolly's voice is so subtle its like its almost effortless for her to jump 3-4 octaves and you barely realize how high of a note she's actually hitting. Its soft and delicate but strong and passionate at the same time.

She boarded a Greyhound bus for Nashville the day after her high school graduation. Her uncle and sometimes songwriting partner, Bill Owens, had already moved there with his wife and young family. The breaks didn't happen right away. Dolly and Bill were signed to a songwriting contract. Her first success was as a songwriter. She later wrote a song about her early days in Nashville called "Down on Music Row." I think you might like to react to that one.

This is been one of my favorite songs since I first heard it in the movie Best Little whorehouse in Texas. And even though it's not really a Christmas song it has a lot of depth and meaning. Meaning even though things come to an end they're painful they're sad but you must continue to move on and keep fighting for your happiness. Things can be sweet at times and sometimes they're hard to swallow in a sense. All of Dolly songs are beautiful and I hope you continue sampling her music

This song was actually written by Carol Hall for the stage musical 'The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas'. The song comes towards the end of the show, and it is a group number of all of the girls who work at the house called "The Chicken Ranch" led by the madame of the house. The stage show was adapted for film with Dolly playing the role of the madame, Miss Mona Stangley, opposite Burt Reynolds as Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd. The film is really fun also starring Dom DeLuise, Jim Nabors, and Charles Durning (who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar as the Governor of Texas). It has a lot of really great songs: "Texas Has A Whorehouse In It", "20 Fans", "Lil Bitty Pissant Country Place", and "The Side-Step" among many others. The film actually also featured a song that Dolly wrote in the 1970s that, while it was a big hit for Dolly, became a MONSTER hit for Whitney Houston..."I Will Always Love You". Dolly Rebecca Parton was born Jan 19, 1946 in Sevier County TN, which includes the towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge (home of "Dollywood"), the tourist mecca for the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. The 4th of 12 children, in a time when this part of the country was extremely rural and inpoverished, her family included. I guess you could say she began her career as a child making apperences on the "Cas Walker Show" a local morning variety type program that I remember watching myself as a child. She moved to Nashville fresh out of high school and eventually landed a spot with "The Porter Wagoner Show" Things really began to take off for her from there. There's just too much to tell...best to get the whole story from her own lips...she has always been very willing to share it. Look around...you'll love the interviews, holiday specials, and clips from her own TV show all over You Tube and in other places.
