Perfect choice for the 1st FF Christmas. Her life story is movie worthy. I'm an old white woman who had a huge girl crush on her when I was very young. She was like a fairy tale pixie in real life. There have been dozens of covers of this song. Since 1953 anywhere from 1 to a dozen covers of this song have been published _every year._ However, this 1953 version by Eartha is the original version that was written for her to sing for a Christmas presentation. One of the records it broke was the unwritten unbroken rule of radio DJs to not play Christmas music in November. Since this first version in 1953 (she asks for a '54 convertible) she alone has re-recorded this song about 18 times.

James Taylor's version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is my favorite. It was released shortly after 9/11, and was so moving. He used the original "In a year we all will be together, if the fates allow" rather than the more common "From now on we all will be together" -- it hit hard in a time when we were emotionally destroyed. We had to believe that in a year we would be OK. I cried the first time I heard it and I cry every time. And it's been deeply meaningful last year and this when COVID has kept us from being together and made it tough to have a "merry little" Christmas." From wikipedia: Recently, more and more singers have been opting for the darker words. James Taylor, for one, was inspired to go back to the song’s bittersweet roots after 9/11. He recorded "Merry Little Christmas" in fall 2001 and released it to radio soon after (it’s included on his new James Taylor at Christmas album). "It’s as though people were suddenly experiencing everything on a deeper level for a while," says the singer, who was intrigued to learn that the song was penned during WWII. Though Martin has said he wasn’t consciously writing about wartime separations, Taylor "would be very surprised if he wasn’t somehow influenced by the mood of missing people over the holidays and hoping like hell that they would be home next Christmas, if not this one." In times of strife, "we 'muddle through,' as the lyric says. As the best lyric says."

For holiday female friday, may I suggest: The Carpenters - Merry Christmas Darling. Amy Grant - The Night Before Christmas. Patti Labelle - Oh Holy Night.

She actually recorded a musical number for that movie called "Snuff out the light" but it never made the final cut. The audio did make it here on KZfaq though - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aZ1kq7pl38DGinU.html

I grew up watching Eartha Kitt in the movies. She was a commanding presence in such a tiny body with a very unusual speaking voice.and piercing eyes. There was really no one like her.
