Can't beat the pureness and simplicity of Dolly's version, too much of the vocal acrobatics in Whitney Houston's take on it , becomes more about the voice than the story or the music.

@@tahliasgoddaddy True, Dolly hit #1 twice with two different versions of the same song, and as someone else pointed out there was a third Dolly version that made the Top 20. It's just a great song, period, which is why Whitney had success. Some songs are so good that they are successful over and over again.

That song was a personal goodbye to her dear friend and mentor Porter Wagoner when she left his show to go solo. Her singing is so warm and inviting and she makes everyone feel like she’s singing just to them. That’s what makes her so special as a singer. As a person, she’s fantastic, such a wonderful person. Her early childhood book giveaway is phenomenal, Dollywood is a hit, and she sponsored the research into covid vaccines to jumpstart them. Her music history speaks for itself and she’s been married to her husband for decades. An all around amazing woman.

Every Female singer, and some male singers, say that she is their inspiration. She is one of the most influential singer/songwriters EVER. "Jolene", "Coat of Many Colors", "9 to 5", "Islands in the Stream", "Here you come again"..... hundreds of songs. In fact, she says she still writes at lease 1-2 songs per day. She was born in Tennessee in poverty, very interesting story of her rise and work ethic to get where she is today.

A lot of people assume Whitney Houston's version of this song is the original. But Dolly wrote this back in 1973. She wrote it as a farewell to her business partner & mentor Porter Wagoner, expressing her decision to pursue a solo career. Love Dolly's sweet version. Whitney made it into a powerhouse song.

Not too long after she had a hit with this song, she had a conversation with Elvis Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, about recording his own version of it. However, the day before it was supposed to happen, Parker said that with any song Elvis recorded, he was to receive a good portion of the publishing rights. Dolly wasn't willing to do that, so she turned him down. Thank goodness she did.

Country legend Porter Wagoner gave Dolly her first big break when he featured her regularly on his TV show. As Dolly's fame grew, she wanted to branch out on her own. She knew that it would break Porter's heart, so she wrote this song to express her feelings about ending their professional partnership. I heard that she wrote this song overnight and then performed it on The Porter Wagoner Show. The clip you played is not from that show, but I highly recommend a listen even if you check it out on your own. Dolly Parton, I will Always Love you on the Porter Wagoner show.

iirc, Years later Porter was in a very bad financial situation. He was going to have to sell the rights to all his music to avoid bankruptcy. Dolly bought his entire portfolio at a rather exorbitant amount. Then gave the portfolio back to him. This, even after he had sued her for 3 million dollars (1970s million dollars). Re: this song. She knew she could never have a discussion with Porter about her leaving the show. So she wrote this song and the next day sang it to Porter in his office. Porter broke down crying.

She wrote this song and Jolene the same night. As others have mentioned she wrote this song as a way to end her working with Porter Wagoner who didn't want her to leave and he had hard feelings over the split. When Porter was in financial trouble and had to sell his song library Dolly bought it and gave his songs back to him. She grew up just outside of Pigeon Forge TN . For a good overview of her pre 2006 career watch her Kennedy Center Honors ceremony. She was against her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as she thought she was unworthy which led her to release the album Rockstar. She is also Godmother to Miley Cyrus. One of my favorite Christmas songs is Hard Candy Christmas which she wrote when she worked with Burt Reynolds on the film Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. When I hear it being played I smile knowing where it comes from. Other Dolly songs to listen to are Jolene, 9 to 5, Coat of Many Colors, Little Sparrow, Backwoods Barbie. She has duets with numerous artists over the years. Really suggest watching the full KCH induction video.

Dolly is a genius. She plays a million instruments, has written some of the best songs on the planet, and is…she’s Dolly!! There is no other artist like her. This is from the Porter Wagoner show, which Dolly was part of for several years. Lots of winners to choose from for future listens and you can’t get better than her classics, but I’d recommend some newer stuff too. She just put out a rock album and does some brilliant duets. I love her recent single World on Fire. She’s also, basically, an angel on earth. She was a major funder for the Moderna Covid vaccine. She sends children across the country books every month with Dolly’s Imagination Library. The world is better because of Dolly Parton. (Also, blaspheme that you haven’t heard Reba - pronounced with a long e. She’s a legend as well.)

You should check out her version on the actual Porter Wagoner show. Dolly wanted to strike out on her own. She wrote this song about him (Porter) to tell him how she felt, and he was touched, so he let her out of her contract. After Dolly left the show Porter Wagoner eventually became bitter and spoke ill of her. Still, when he became bankrupt and was about to sell his catalogue of songs, Dolly bought them. Then she gave them back to him. She’s the classiest class act. I’ll enjoy any dolly you sing everyone’s gonna recommend the same things song wise.. But if you want a mix up, you could try Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus’ Wrecking Ball. I really loved it. Thanks for finally getting to Dolly!

Her rendition of this song is more emotional for me…you hear the heartbreak in her voice…she brings me to tears. Whitney Houston’s take on Dolly’s song is unbelievable and also emotional, but a different kind of emotion. I get goosebumps from Whitney’s vocal ability, but I get tears from Dolly’s version because her delivery feels more like true heartbreak.

Immediate song recommendations are - Coat of many colours, Jolene & 9-5. If I remember correctly- when she wrote 9-5 - she set the beat to the tune by clacking her finger nails together. Crossover suggestions: Listen to Trio sometime -- a trio of Dolly, LInda Ronstadt and EmmyLou Harris, stars in their own rights, who got together just to sing & harmonize, and ended up releasing three albums. Their voices blend beautifully and they are a delight to hear. On your movie channel, watch 9 to 5 sometime, a kinda silly movie that was nonetheless a sensation in the early 80s, and was Dolly's first film ever, starring with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Super fun, and Dolly wrote the hit song that played over the opening credits (nominated for Best Song at the Oscars, as well as the Golden Globes, where Dolly was also nominated for her acting performance.

She wrote the song for Porter Wagner. She was a member of his show and wanted to go out on her own, so she wrote this to explain. Linda's is the best cover but she doesn't do the talking section. I can't stand Whitney Houston's version but Dolly didn't mind since she has made so much money off it. I have been a Dolly fan for a very long time. Her other best know songs are Coat of Many Colors, Jolene, 9 to 5, Islands in the Steam (with Kenny Rogers). She also did 2 albums with Emmy Lou Harris and Linda Ronstadt called Trio. Her latest album is rock song covers with guest artists.

Dolly & Stevie Nicks have a duet that came out on Dolly’s last album. It’s not bad for two people almost 160 years old combined !!

I'm pretty sure that is the GrandOle Oprey. Most country singers of her time got their start on the Oprey.
