Listen to the whole album from beginning to end. It has a theme to it. It's wonderful

This is not "Desperado". "This is Doolin-Dalton/Desperado". It is off the same album as "Desperado". Someone with more Eagles knowledge than myself should explain it. The album had a theme of the old west and I believe Doolin-Dalton is the character they wrote about. I am not sure, but you should go back and listen to "Desperado" as well. It is a beautiful song.

Desperado means outlaw, and Doolin-Dalton was a gang in the Wild West.

There was a Bill Doolin and a Bill Dalton. Years earlier, Bill Dalton's brothers formed the Dalton gang. They were Grat, Bob and Emmitt. They tried to hold up two banks simultaneously in Coffeyville, KS. Everyone in the robbery, except Emmitt, was killed. That inspired the line "Two brothers lyong dead in Coffeyville", which was in the first "Doolin-Dalton" track that opened the album. Later Bill Dalton got together with Bill Doolin to form the Doolin-Dalton gang. These two songs, "Doolin-Dalton / Desperado (Reprise), closes out the "Desperado" album, and are reprises to the original tracks found earlier on the album.

@4Runner yes, it’s referencing how lonely an outlaw is when they’re on the run

There is a single called Desperado performed by both Linda Ronstadt who's backup band became known as the Eagles. They also released a single. I'm not sure who wrote it but somebody will comment, I'm sure. This sounds like another track from the same titled album.

Good start, @Scarlet c, I know everybody's short on time, but the Desperado album should be listened to from start to finish. It tells the story of a farmboy's gradual transition into a gunfighter, and then an outlaw. Bill Doolin and Bill Dalton were the leaders of the Doolin-Dalton Gang in the early 1890s.

The band did a live TV performance 1973/74 of Doolin Dalton. The studio version begins with a guitar whereas the live version starts off with a harmonica.

Great breakdown Emily, you don't know how good it makes me feel to know you have experienced the Eagles, they have so many great songs for you to enjoy and you will feel so enriched if you do. They are true professionals who know their craft.

Hope I can add to the comments: This is an original song but the reason many people don't recognize it is that is a "reprise"(a term used signifying a repeated passage of music). It is from the second album ("Desperado") a Western-themed release by the Eagles. The first cut of the album was Doolin-Dalton spotlighting Bill Doolin and Bill Dalton of the Doolin-Dalton gang. The song "Desperado" closed out the first side of the album and yes, Linda Ronstadt's version was a hit. Before the formation of the Eagles do-founders Glenn Frey and Don Henley were in Ronstadt's backup group. The album contains a brief instrumental of "Doolin-Dalton" and a few songs later the reprise ("Doolin-Dalton/Desperado") is performed with references to gunfights and a lynching. The album (sadly puzzling) was not well-received but is dear to most Eagle fans. There was a video of the reprise starring the Eagles, J. D. Souther and Jackson Browne but the Eagles record label has it removed whenever it pops up. Try to find it, though, since it is very good.

OMG, you are the first person I’ve ever seen who actually listen to the whole entire song, not just the popular song that everybody hears on the radio, but the entire song as it was written and performed by Eagles. Doolin-Dalton Desperado in its entirety is phenomenal. WOW! Your reaction ….. PRICELESS!

The Dalton Gang was a group of outlaws in the American Old West during 1890-1892. It was also known as The Dalton Brothers because four of its members were brothers. The gang specialized in bank and train robberies Emmett Dalton (May 3, 1871 - July 13, 1937) was a member of the Dalton Gang in the American Old West. Part of a gang that attempted to rob two banks in Coffeyville, Kansas, on October 5, 1892, he was the only member of five to survive, despite receiving 23 gunshot wounds.

@@emilyfeechi kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8uco9SIqqisgmg.html If you want to change it up, Linda Ronstadt had a VERY popular version of this song and I believe Don Henley (Eagles) who sings back up on her version is one of her all star group of back up singers (The Gentlemen Boys) that usually included Henley, Jackson Browne, Waddy Wachtel, J.D Souther, Kenny Edwards and Warren Zevon (as well as a few others). Henley credits Ronstadt with popularizing this song initially.
