They literally held a senate hearing dedicated to canceling him. Leading it was Lynne Cheney (yes, VP Dick Cheneys wife). They had a circle jerk about it complete with poster boards with his lyrics. She called him a “violent misogynist” which is rich considering her husband is a war criminal, but I digress, they DID try canceling him and completely failed. The harder they tried the more kids listened to him.

This was from Eminem's second LP. He is the reason for the parental advisory stickers. Because of what he talked about in his first LP; Al Gore and Dick Cheney's Wives went to Congress to have EM's music removed from the radio. Parents that were trying to sensor TV and radio went against Em hard and tried to cancel him before cancel culture existed.

I’m kinda at the cusp between generations, but I think technically I’m part of the earliest millennials. My mom and I watched TRL together pretty much every weekday afternoon (a show on MTV called “Total Request Live” - it was a countdown of the most popular music videos, and had celebrity guests on). These early Eminem songs/videos were very popular, and she definitely enjoyed watching his videos, too. 😂 I would say that cancel culture was actually in its infancy in those days - it just didn’t have a name yet, and the logistics were different. Political correctness was on the rise. Eminem sparked plenty of outrage - he had the FCC and various political figures trying to censor him, had lots of people protesting him at various appearances/performances for being “homophobic.” But the internet had only just begun to become a somewhat widely available tool - most people who did have it still had dial-up, and social media didn’t exist. “Viral” moments didn’t spread through social media, they spread through news broadcasts and newspapers/magazines. Eminem was just so insanely popular, and most people actually appreciated the First Amendment…so he was uncancelable despite a lot of powerful people’s best efforts.

I'm echoing a lot of people, I'm sure, but more than one generation claims him. I'm 49 (his age) and Gen X, and we generally claim him first just because he's our age, but his music is loved by Millenials, Gen X, some Boomers, not sure about Gen Y, and Gen Z is somewhere between discovering him/confused by him and totally digging his bars. Em is Gen X all the way - sense of humor (definitely bordering on dark/daring), sarcastic, no-BS, and generally calls it like he sees it without worrying what other people are going to say about his words, thoughts, position, or politics about something. I haven't always agreed with everything he's said, but I've always respected the hell out of him and loved his music. He fought for respect in the Hip Hop community, and he earned his well-deserved place.

The big difference between when this song came out and now is how "canceling" or protesting worked. Em had massive protests against him, the difference was at the time the majority moral opinion of the country was of a religious ideology which by law can have no legal authority. Today however that has been replaced with a political ideology that is separate from any religion but still acts in similar ways, because there is no religion directly tied to the ideology laws and policies can be passed to cater to that ideology. Then these laws and policies can be used to influence the behavior of companies and social groups. I am waiting for the day when this all clicks in Em's brain and he comes back to his senses and starts actually putting a message behind his talent again.

This song came out in 2000. As for age, I am 47 now and started listening to Eminem on the album before this one (Slim Shady LP) in 1999 so at 22 years old. Favorite Eminem song: Without Me.

I would say I grew up on Eminem but actually my daughters did as they rode around in the back seat with dad turning it up on the car stereo! I’m still a young 62. In 2000 there was no canceling, only limiting of where it could be played.

He's missing pop Cultural references. The butt cheeks stuff is a satirical commentary on the Tom Green Show and the Bum Bum song. This video is a time capsule of early 2000's

42 and remember the very first CD with the pill on it. I don't know the Eminem today, but I was in high school when he came out and was always a huge fan. So glad to hear Slim is back.
