Agree with trade school! While I'm going to a traditional 4+ year school because its the path I personally want to take, there's always going to be a need for carpenters, plumbers, etc. Excellent pathway that our youth should definitely explore!

@@aviator2252 It depends where you are in the country and your economic situation. There are people who go months without electricity and have gone years without running water. Just because we live in America it doesn't mean there aren't people who don't struggle on a daily basis and live in conditions that are closer to third world than most Americans realize or care to admit to. Just because you don't see it in your daily life doesn't mean it isn't happening. The world is many shades of grey so things are never as clear cut as good vs evil or anything like that. It is something to consider and some food for thought.

'I think you know you did pretty good if you got your kid all the way to graduation' ESPECIALLY if you're s step-parent like Gabriel is. Also, I agree with the trade school thing. Here in the US, the trades are dying. Fewer and fewer people are going into trades, meaning fewer electricians, plumbers, mechanics, etc. in the workforce meaning prices are higher. Eventually, there won't be anymore of them and everyone will wonder why. It's cause they are seen as low-standing jobs, jobs for dishonest people, charging you way more than they need, kids told to not do them 'go to college and get a better job than that plumber'. Meanwhile, that plumber made $200 to just walk into your house. He made your entire 2-week paycheck in just one day. I have a journeyman electrician friend who saved up enough in 6 months to buy a BRAND NEW 2018 Toyota Corolla, cash down. His employer only does businesses, not residencies, though. The guys that drive around picking up yours trash get paid, depending on city, anywhere between $20/hr and $20/hr. GO INTO TRADES PEOPLE! Not to mention, trade colleges tend to be far cheaper than non-trade colleges!

Definitely agree with your comment about missing America after living abroad for a bit, I spent a semester in Switzerland and it was awesome, European living definitely has it's benefits but I did miss the food and culture in the states, especially American humor, I think the insanity of America kinda influences our comedy so I did find myself kinda missing the cheesy comedy/action flicks, the junk food (junk food in Europe tends to be more expensive) and the sheer diversity of food options, we tend to have more diverse hole in the wall gems for authentic ethnic food, probably because we don't pay restaurant workers as much as other countries but the crazy amount of options made me appreciate American food culture a bit more in that regard.

Nail on the head about trade schools or just getting a job and learning. They compared a lawyer, doctor, and plumber over the course of their careers and the plumber did well because he started earning money at 18 and by 22 or so he was a journeyman and could end up with his own business. No college debt. The lawyer -- and especially the doctor -- were ass-deep in debt by the time they were done with school. Don't get a degree unless your career requires it (full disclosure, I have two).

Trade school with a liberal education as a secondary and only part time for the liberal education (aka a bit of everything with a moderate focus). So you can know how to form an argument (like writing a paper kind of argument not the oh shit now I need to fing a place to stay while my partner cools off argument). In 5-10yrs you can do that all online with an AI as your teacher at whatever pase you want.

I don't live on two different continents, but I do live 8 thousand miles away from the US part year. This notion that America is the best place to live in the world, is nonsense. Do you really think everyone in the world feels like the best place to live is in another country? A lot do, but then human nature is that of covetousness. This is so true in most places, but we Americans have been taught this idea that there is no place else in the world where you would ever want or even should consider living outside of "the best country in the world", America. My other home country has a great deal of poverty. Even extreme poverty. Yet the majority of those people just want a better life, not necessarily somewhere else or some other country. Then some believe no matter what you tell them, that every American living in America is rich beyond their wildest dreams. They believe this even as a large number of foreigners that live in those countries are there because they can't have what they can afford in those so-called third-world countries, in America. Here in the States, I live with my daughter because I can't afford a house, car, send my last child to college, and all the other things I can have in my other home country. What I can have in the US that just doesn't happen in my other home country, is police harassment fears. Mass shooting fears every time I go anywhere. Even though there is a class or ethnic disparities. I have rarely run into any of that. Quite the contrary. I often feel like a celebrity because of curiosity because I looked different, speak a different language, and all that. Do I miss America when I am not here? NO! One thing about traveling. You can always go home. So why would I miss a place that has so much poverty, fears of others, and if you can survive to the next day? Why would I ever miss a place where everyone is afraid of the next person? I must admit though. When I return to the US, I realize very quickly that I miss the cool weather and more and better roads. The best thing that America has from where I live outside the US is health care and a common language. Bottom line? Travel!

Have a love/hate relationship with both the US and Japan. I want to marry the houses from both countries. I loved the house in Japan design wise... but they don't do insulation or central AC/heating, the hallways, entry and bathrooms are about the same temperature as it is outside. THAT makes it really hard to want to take a shower in winter, when it's in the high 30's-low 50's, you don't want to get undressed. Thank God though for the heated toilet seats! The Japanese also do the toilets in their own room, then the shower and bathtub are in another room, no chance of someone stinking up the bathroom before you take your shower. What I like more about America, it's actually kind of funny... in America, you pretty much keep driving your car until it falls apart. In Japan you get a new car every couple of years, it's cheaper to get a new car than renew things for an old car, you do more walking than driving as well and you take trains everywhere! It takes twice as long to do things like laundry and the microwaves are 500 watts, so, the food takes a long time to cook too. In Japan, the washer and drier are the same machine, so, I missed the US in the fact that while I had a load drying, I could have a load in the washer too. We had foreign exchange students from Japan when I was a kid, they could not get over the fact that the bedroom was so big and they couldn't believe the 3 car garage!

I have a masters in fine art from NYU I personally can’t tell you one time I used it but I can surely tell you the exact amount of six figure debt it caused. @@MrLboydReacts You don't have to take on that much debt; there are state schools and scholarships, and even going to school outside the US. Having a liberal arts degree meant I started with strong research and writing skills and was able to make a career out of my versatility and then hire a bunch of other liberal arts grads to work with me. Nothing against trades if that's where somebody's skills and passions lie, just beware of particular skills that will become outdated.
