The song is his prayer, and asking to be free of birth is asking to be free from reincarnation and remain in the spiritual world. A beautiful song! ♥

Well, the actual lyrics read, “Keep me free from birth…”, so it’s possible he meant that he wanted to be born free and stay free throughout his life. But, a beautiful song, nonetheless.

Exactly! In Hari Krishna, we are reincarnated until we reach spiritual enlightenment here. We keep coming back until we get it right. When we do get it right, we ascend to nirvana and are free from rebirth. My favorite line is "Help me cope with this heavy load, trying to touch and reach you with heart and soul."

I have always understood the line - keep me free from birth - as a Hindu belief that when a soul reaches a certain level of understanding or detachment from this world, a high level of spirituality - then they are freed from the cycle of re-incarnation on earth. George spent time in India and a lot of his music is influenced by the instruments from around the globe.

Yes, that's it. George is directing this song to his Higher Self (and God/Divinity within) to live a spiritual life, and ensure he doesn't need to return and be reborn on the earthly plane, but ascend to a higher realm after he eventually passes.

It would seem the majority of people don't know the " free from birth" line as a Hindu spiritual reference and would automatically think he meant birth control or something. Because they won't look it up. So it's good you all clear that up here. I could just hear some from the USA Bible Belt and elsewhere screaming "He singing about abortion...that heathen!" Sigh....

George Harrison was a massively underrated artist in that he was almost eclipsed by John and Paul. An interesting bit of trivia is that George was the first out of the Fab Four to have a number one - My Sweet Lord - in both the US and UK in the late months of 1970 and the early weeks of 1971 after the Beatles split. Love the Beatles, in fact George is a distant cousin. Like many people of the 50s and 60s it was common in our house to listen to the Beatles. Jump to the 80s and I meet my soon to be husband, he LOVED George, I didn't say anything. A few years later we go to a family reunion and people break out instruments and sing some Beatles songs, hubby is into it. I say, while we are here, we need to stop at the cemetery so I can "check on the family" and there are Many Harrison's buried there. Hubby mentions jokingly, maybe that's where your cousins get there talent from. My sister and I look at him and say " ya think" and couldn't stop laughing at him when it hit him.

There is a beautiful version of this that was performed by Jeff Lynne at the Concert For George tribute after Harrison's death. Another great George song, my personal favorite, is Beware of Darkness. The lyrics just hit me. "Beware of darkness, it can hit you. It can hurt you. Make you sore, and what is more. That is not what we are here for." He is, bar none, my favorite musician of all time. There are more talented ones. More prolific ones. But no musician radiated the pure joy music brought them quite like George. His music manages to be life affirming without being cheesy. And give him a week or two and he could play anything that had strings. A true student of music throughout his life, even when he was at the peak of his profession. RIP George

This is a great one. It's from my favorite albums of his, though not necessarily his best. His best is still probably his first, "All Things Must Pass" which had a lot of great songs on it. If you want some more George suggestions I'd try "All Those Years Ago" (his song for John Lennon), "You", "Crackerbox Palace", "The Art of Dying", "Try Some Buy Some", and you definitely want to check out "Blow Away". I had "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)" on a 45 single that was left behind by older siblings and I played it a lot along with the flip side "Miss O'Dell". You might also want to check out the concert for Bangla Desh which was one of the first ever big rock shows for charity. Indian musician and Harrison mentor Ravi Shankar asked George to help and he put it together. Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Ringo Starr, and Bob Dylan all were participants as well as the group Badfinger.

LOVE this song. He sings some of my favorite songs. What a gifted singer and songwriter. He's asking our Father to give him a burden free life full of love and to not be reincarnated but to remain in Paradise.

I think this song really defines George as a musician and a person. There is nothing not to like here. You may already be aware of this but you really need to see the tribute concert for George put together by Eric Clapton. It it my favourite live concert ever. Please check it out. Just search for "concert for George". Trust me, you'll love it.

One of the most beautiful songs by my favorite Beatle, Mr. George Harrison. He was also my mother's favorite and that was a mistery for me, but as I grew up I understand why. George give us peace and happiness through his songs. And he was the more simple, quiet and easy from the fab four. The guy next door. Could you please react to "When we was Fab" by George? Regards from Chile! 🙂

Man, what a great song! This is one of my top favorite songs ever recorded, from my favorite Beatle for the loving message, the simple construction, but most especially from the sincerity of the delivery.. it gets me every time. I think I suggested this one in the comments a long time back (when you were asking for more “hippy” type “peace and love” type tunes, and so glad to see y’all giving it a listen, though I’m not too certain you ever even saw my comment (as I can’t imagine the amount of time it would require to read through all of the comments we leave). 😮 It’s really cool to see that seed you had planted eventually come to fruition, regardless of whether it was your comment, or anyone else’s. 🤷 There’s plenty of great George Harrison tunes, and I concur with all the suggestions I’ve seen being made in the comments here. Since we’re sowing seeds down here, I’d suggest another great “peace and love” track from Elvis Costello called “What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace, Love, and Understanding?”.

First time I've ever seen J. close his eyes and sway to the music THIS QUICKLY - only a George Harrison song could cause that! LoL. I didn't think you guys would EVER get around to reviewing this song - it is soooo beautiful. This song is in my top 3 of George Harrison's songs. The other two are *MY SWEET LORD* which you both have reviewed and *SOMETHING* which is my very top favorite - y'all must review that one next!

George accumulated so much material during the Beatles years because he was only given one or two songs per album. It all came pouring out on All Things Must Pass, a great album. For rocking George, I suggest Wah-Wah or Awaiting On You All. For beautiful George, Behind That Locked Door.
