He's not really being silly or serious, he's just being Iggy lol and you interpret him how you interpret him. He's inherently eccentric/shocking, quite often with lyrics based around rock and roll lifestyle. He is a punk rock n rolla and he lived it. I tend to just appreciate the vibe of his music more than anything and have always seen him as a proto-Manson.

"Well, that's like hypnotizing chickens" has been my favorite line since I was a little kid. My aunt played this for me around 1980. Iggy and David Bowie wrote this song together while getting off cocaine in Berlin in the 70s. They were broke and had an apartment. This was the Pop/Bowie collaborative years.

I would not have started y’all off with “Lust For Life,” (great album nonetheless,) but the added problem here is that it was the biggest song off the Trainspotting soundtrack, and if you don’t know that and have not seen that film this video is probably super confusing-good case for a lyric video, or just have lyrics pulled up, (I would have thought by now Brad would just have lyrics pulled up for every song.) Iggy Pop & The Stooges are the “godfathers” of punk, their debut was released in 1969. This song was released during Pop’s solo career in 1977, BUT this video is from the ‘90s to coincide with the film trainspotting (1996.) Iggy Pop is still producing music today. 2019’s “Free” was his most recent solo album. Listening to this song may also benefit with the context of Pop’s personal history, which was full of heroin, speed, various other drugs, and homelessness brought on by the addiction to drugs. I believe when The Stooges reunited briefly they discussed in interviews how the kind of gear they played wasn’t important because one of the other band members was probably going to steal it to sell for drugs. Also, around the time that album was released Iggy Pop & David Bowie had been good friends and frequent collaborators. Check out Iggy Pop & Grace Jones performing “Nightclubbin’” (also on the Trainspotting soundtrack,) or “China Girl” (a song which he and Bowie co-wrote and both released their own versions of,) songs off the album, The Idiot. If I were to start someone off on an Iggy Pop path, “I Wanna Be Your Dog” of The Stooges’ self-titled debut would be the song, (the version off The Crow: City Of Angels’ soundtrack is my favorite, but I’d still start ya off with the original,) and probably “Search And Destroy” or “Gimme Danger” off Raw Power (1973.)

The song is about trying to control addictions. I know the references he makes are based on a book, so those who aren't familiar with the book struggle to understand what it's about. I'm pretty sure he wrote this with David Bowie too. I'd probably classify it as a punk sub-genre, but can definitely hear Bowie's influence (and he's difficult to put into a genre). The movie Trainspotting, about addiction, made this song more popular than it was nearly 20 years earlier when it was initially released. Saw Iggy Pop open for Pearl Jam in 1997 or 1998... he was not happy with the uninterested crowd and cut his set short. Very few people seemed to notice.

The Godfather of Punk was lamenting his teenage son's behavior and his own promise to him. Iggy was pretty wild in his day, but his kid mellowed him out. Iggy incentivised his son's highschool graduation with a promise to take his son on the road with him. Iggy soon found his son to be twice the Wildman he had been and he tells the story in the song. Unfortunately, the song was also used for the drug movie, Trainspotting, so the video has a convoluted message.

Iggy was languishing in a mental facility around 1975 when David Bowie began visiting him. He took him along on the 1976 Station to Station tour and after that, they decided to kick drugs and record together in Europe. The first lp "the Idiot" is named after a book by Fyodor Dostoevsky. The second "Lust for Life" is named after an Irving Stone novel about Vincent van Gogh. The Idiot's cover is based on "The Scream", a painting by ‎Edvard Munch. Iggy and David recorded in chateau d'herouville, imagining themselves to be Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh, 2 artists with a connection to the chateau who often painted the same subject separately and did self portraits of each other. What David really was after was pioneering a new sound, including groundbreaking "treated" and electronic drums (Nightclubbing's beats were sampled by Nine Inch Nails's Trent Reznor on "Closer", without risking his own reputation. What he learned flowed over into the "LOW" sessions. He also discovered that iggy went into the studio with nothing and composed on the spot, a skill that Bowie used quite often going forward.

Iggy Pop and the Stooges! Punk rock before there was punk rock ! I’ve heard he had set himself on fire on stage before ! He’s a wild dude that’s for sure ! His song Candy I think it was , was a duet with one of the singers from the B52s is really a good song it’s more normal sounding than his usual stuff !

Iggy started playing punk in the 1960s. He was before anyone. This song was in the movie Trainspotting. Those scenes that aren't Iggy are from the movie. The soundtrack had a lot of punk artists.

He’s talking about how he’s enjoying life today, Iggy was a heavy drug addict and alcoholic, I’m pretty sure heroine was his main drug. He’s been clean and sober for many years. Eccentric is an understatement he’s a very entertaining person.

Yea that’s Iggy. One of the best front men ever and a total free spirit. Has he done too many drugs? Oh, hell yea! He should be dead but has been clean for quite a while. Performing without a shirt is his hallmark. Despite being a serious drug abuser he’s always had like about two ounces of body fat and a six pack and is remarkably flexible which made for some very interesting stage shows. He used to be known for diving off stage into the crowd and body surfing as the crowd would pass him around and eventually they would throw him back up on stage and he’d be off and running again. Amazing he never had a heart attack during a performance with the energy he put out during a show. Iggy is someone you have to see live to really appreciate him. He is just absolutely beloved by his fans for his free spirit but he’s not exactly for everyone. He’s also one of the few Rock stars with a baritone voice. You either get Iggy and love him or you won’t. The great thing about an Iggy Pop performance is you never know what to expect. There’s an excellent video of Iggy body surfing during a performance and he has a jumbo sized jar of peanut butter and he’s dipping his hand into the jar and tossing globs of peanut butter into the audience and the crowd was loving it. The legendary Blues guitarist B.B. King after seeing an Iggy Pop performance famously said about Iggy “Who said White Boys can’t play the Blues?”. LOL So you can’t really put Iggy into a genre. Which is why he was never commercially successful you just kinda have to accept him for who he is but his live performances are dope even though he’s in his 70’s now and, yep…he still performs without a shirt.

Lust for Life was used as one of the songs on the soundtrack of "Trainspotting". A film about a bunch of Scottish junkies that just live from day to day, and end up in a mess. Iggy Pop the lead singer of the Stooges was singing about the chaos of living life on the road as a musician, being a junky hooked on heroin, and trying to keep up with your own crazy stage image. The film and the song kind of collide in meaning

This was 1977, I think, and I heard it on college radio and quit listening to top 40 radio. Oh, and David Bowie collaborated on the album.

The video is clips from the film Trainspotting, iggy has been going for years formally with a cult band the stooges, brilliant performer, and he's one of those folks you think " how the fuck is he still alive" 😂 brilliant all the same though!

You should find the video of Iggy preforming with his band The Stooges in Cincinnati in 1970 at an outdoor festival. He goes out into the crowd and someone hands him a jar of peanut butter. He rubs some on his chest and then starts throwing handfuls of peanut butter into the crowd. That's the kind of craziness Iggy has provided for over 5 decades.

All the scenes that don't have him in it are from a British film called Trainspotting with Ewan Mcreggor. It's about drug addiction and one young man's quest to stay clean. "Choose life" is one of the catchphrases from the film. This track was just part of the theme music from the film.

That is a video after they used the song for the movie Trainspotting. Iggy did this originally with David Bowie's input in the early/mid 1970's. Iggy is a wild ride!

Felt compelled to share: I literally just watched the same video y'all reacted to days ago for the first time. I am familiar with Iggy Pop and this is the only song I could have named, but yeah ~ he's out there. I think the genre fits comfortably with his fans as not for everyone; i.e. you don't have to love us, sit back and enjoy the weird energy.

The song is about heroin addiction, and getting over it. Had it in the ear before references shooting up. The song was used in the film "Trainspotting", which is where the clips in the video originated. It has also been used in many commercials, including American Express and a cruise line.
