The group consisted of lead vocalist Leee John (born June 23, 1957, London, England) who was working as a backing vocalist for The Delfonics, Chairmen Of The Board, The Velvelettes and The Elgins when he met Ashley Ingram, a guitarist/bassist (born November 27, 1960, Northampton, England). Leee John and Ashley Ingram formed a songwriting partnership, resolving to start their own "slinky, sexy, and erotic" group, working in a short-lived band called: Fizzz. While they were auditioning for another short-lived band: Midnight Express, they met drummer Errol Kennedy (born June 9, 1953, Montego Bay, Jamaica), who at a very young age had learned to drum in the Boys' Brigade and Air Training Corps. Errol Kennedy was a member of the London-based Soul-Funk band: TFB (Typical Funk Band), later known as Central Line, prior to co-founding Midnight Express. Formed in early 1981, the trio took a demo tape of a track called: "Body Talk", to music producers Steven Jolley and Tony Swain. It was released as a single in April 1981 under the group name: "Imagination", which the group chose as a tribute to John Lennon and his 1971 album: Imagine. The track reached #4 on the UK Singles chart in July 1981, selling 250,000 copies in the UK and spending 18 weeks in the Top 50. They had two more hit singles that year with the singles: "In And Out of Love" (September 1981) and "Flashback" (November 1981), both of which peaked at #16 on the UK Singles chart. All three songs were included on their 1981 debut album: Body Talk. Their group's biggest hit: "Just An Illusion", the lead single off of their 1982 album: In The Heat Of The Night, peaked at #2 on the UK Singles chart in March 1982. It also reached #15 on the US Dance Club chart and #27 on the US R&B chart. The song would later be used as the end title song to the 1986 film: F/X. The album's second single: "Music And Lights", peaked at #5 on the UK Singles chart and #52 on the US R&B chart. Leee John released a number of dance singles in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including the UK Garage and House tracks: "Your Mind, Your Body, Your Soul", on Locked On Records, and "U Turn Me", with Ten City vocalist Byron Stingily (2000). Under the artist name Johnny X, he also co-wrote and performed vocals on the song: "Call On Me", which was released on Higher State. In 2005, Leee John released a Jazz album: Feel My Soul, on Candid Records, featuring a mixture of Jazz standards and original compositions. Since the album's release, Leee John has been touring the UK and Europe with his Jazz quartet, as well as performing with Imagination. Leee John is an ambassador for SOS Children's Villages, an international orphan charity providing homes and mothers for orphaned and abandoned children. He supports the charity's annual World Orphan Week campaign which takes place each February. In 2012, he performed at the Leicester Square Theatre. Special guests included Mike Lindup from Level 42. In 2016, Leee John released an Imagination album entitled: Imagination Featuring Leee John. Leee John appeared on the track: "The Lost Chord", by Gorillaz for their Song Machine project, which was followed by the album: Song Machine Season One - Strange Timez (2020). Lee John continues to perform live on stage in 2024. After the break-up of Imagination, Errol Kennedy continued both as a musician and producer. He worked with Hugh Masekela at Bray Film Studios to produce the soundtrack for the 1991 film: Soweto, and during the 1990s either toured or produced with bands such as Odyssey, Shalamar, Rose Royce, Grace Kennedy, Jamiroquai, Frankie Knuckles, Larry Levan, Arthur Baker, Colonel Abrams and Simon Ellis. Since 2009, Errol Kennedy has been performing live on stage with his band: ImagiNation ft Errol Kennedy. They toured the UK in 2010-2011, followed by a performance at London's IndigO2 alongside the Three Degrees and Linda Lewis, as well as various events and festivals across Germany in 2012. Errol Kennedy released Imagination's official 30th anniversary single: "Just An Illusion", featuring T'Mar, on M&R Records in May 2013, which is a re-production of Imagination's biggest hit song. The single was taken from the forthcoming anniversary album: New Dimension, released later that year. In 2016, Errol Kennedy released the new track: "You Can Be (All You Want To Be)", on 29 April, which is featured on his compilation album: Greatest Hits (Live). Errol Kennedy has also broadened his talents as the author of the 2015 book: Flying Machines And Their Heroes, a continuing book series that brings some of the greatest stories in aviation history. Errol Kennedy continues to perform live on stage in 2024. Ashley Ingram also enjoyed much success since the band broke up, with his most notable accomplishment being as a songwriter for UK R&B singer Des'ree, and writing and producing her signature song: "You Gotta Be" (1994). Q Magazine included "You Gotta Be" on their list of the "1001 Best Songs Ever", in 2003. He has also worked as a writer-producer for other artists including Chara, Josie, Joycelyn Brown, Giorgia and more.
