The video was the first time his father had heard the song, and the entire crew was apparently crying by the end, and his father looked at them and said, why is everyone crying? I'm still here. A distant relative was in fact the donor of the new kidney but didn't get tested until after the video was made. Both are military veterans of the British military and they used to tell one another, I'm not your son, you're not my father, we're just two grown men saying good bye to detach themselves from emotions for their deployments.

Both James & his father served as Officers in the British Army and whenever one of them was deployed they used to say their goodbyes "I'm not your son, you're not my father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye" James writes amazing meaningful songs and his voice is fab.

Any one who have said the final goodbye to their dad will be hit by these lyrics. I sat by my fathers side in his final days and told him how much i love him :)

it's his dad's hand on his arm that gets me... his thumb moving just a bit to let James know he's there... to comfort James even though he's the one who's ill. You always want to comfort your children... wait until the VERY end of the video. He pats James's arm. Destroys me every time.

James' father had only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease and wasn't expected to survive unless a perfect kidney donor could be found, which thankfully happened, from a distant cousin. This is such a beautiful, powerful song which will always set people off (including myself). I heard that afterwards, James donated all the proceeds from this video to the UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do much fantastic work for ex-servicemen & service women, and God bless him for that. James is such a wonderful man. ❤ 🙋‍♂

One of my favorite things about this song is the first verse is sung solo, the second is sung with him doing his own backing vocal and the third he’s backed by a choir.

Of course your dad's still a superhero! Superheroes set a great example and are there when you need them. ❤️

I appreciated your telling how much you revere your own dad. It probably explains a lot about how you reacted. I’m glad you have that kind of relationship with your dad. Any of us who had good fathers are going to get choked up over this song.

As I understand it, this video was taken in one take, the first take, and Blunt said he didn’t think he could do it twice. Apparently everyone on the set was crying at the end, and his dad asked why they were all crying as he is still here. And...two things: first, I haven't yet watched your other Blunt reaction so I don't know if you know that he's a military hero (I forget what he did, just remember that he received some kind of honor or award for his action). I find his voice and his tenderness/emotionality-- in this song, of course, but in others as well-- even more moving knowing that he has these other aspects, and such a full person. Second, you mentioned your job, and I wonder if you might share with us what it is that you do. I've never heard you mention it beyond suggesting it was to so with videography-- or so I inferred at the time. Now I'm thinking maybe I misunderstood, and you're a nurse, or a researcher (I'd say a doctor but I've never seen the arrogance in you that I've seen in the doctors I've dealt with, personally and professionally. Whatever it is you do, I'd bet money you do it well. Hope you sleep well despite having watched this before going to bed (though I don't see why you blame us-- you were warned it was very emotional, so presumably you could have scheduled the reaction for a non pre-bedtime slot...so hey, that's on you!

In a very real way, James did chase his dad's monster away.

I did not have a mother that anyone would think should be "admired" in anyway, but I learned a lot about her when I became a mother myself. What I learned was that my mother had a wisdom that could only be seen by living. She had a strength that could only be known by suffering. And she gave her children life skills that made us all survivors... God rest her soul.

I feel your pain with regards to your grandmother as i went through the same with my mother. My mother passed away from this horrendous disease in this song so i know exactly how they feel, none of us could donate as we all have autoimmune diseases so there was nothing we could do as her children. She died in my arms while i was on my own with her in my living room while waiting for a ambulance and i have not been able to move on from that moment. I no longer go out of the house anymore and nobody gives a shit or asks me about that day. I was in complete shock for so very long and I think i still am as my mother was my rock through all my illnesses and chemotherapy. I blame myself for her death and dont feel like i did enough for her. My father passed years previous and i wasnt there then as in different countries i blame myself for that too. I know they wouldn't want me to carry this guilt but thats just the way it is. Rest in peace Dereen and Tony you were incredible parents and I miss you both every single day.

A sad song before bed isn't all bad, you can use it as a to clear your mind and emotional, which brings exhaustion and deep sleep.

His father was saved by a distant relative who happened to see this video and contacted him and gave James’ father one of his kidneys after tests found it was compatible for transplant.

That’s a tough one to make it through.

Jame’s father had two strikes against him: he has a rare blood type and he is 74 I think. At that age in the US I don’t think they even put you on a list. But Blount was near the bottom of the list in England due to his age.
