Without James, there would be no hip-hop. No techno. No Ad-libs. No performances. No hustle. The music scene has his DNA all over it. All we can say is no matter how old the song is, it sounds fresh after all this time.

That, kids, was a saxophone, with Bobby Byrd blowing the hell out of it. One of my favorite moments in this legendary song is during the second saxophone solo, when James calls out, "Blow me some 'Trane!" - a shoutout to the great jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, who was known for a similar sound. Why was James Brown known as the hardest working man in show business, you might ask? I got to see him live one time, at an outdoor show on a June night in Birmingham, Alabama in 1993. It felt like it was about 700° outside, with 450% humidity. The man performed a nearly 3-hour show in that miserable heat, in a full suit. At one point in the show, he danced his way over to the grand piano, hopped up on the lid of the piano, camel-walked and funky-chickened and mashed-potatoed his way down the length of the piano lid, then jumped off the piano and landed in a half split. He would have been 60 years old that night. I would have been 21 years old that night, and even back then, such a move would have broken me clean in half. I have never seen one single performer absolutely terrorize a stage the way James Brown did that night, and he was five years away from being eligible for Social Security at the time. I can't even fathom what a force of nature he must have been in live in concert 40 years earlier.

There is no pitch correction or tempo correction on this song. I'm a lifelong musician myself, and it seems that young players these days think that playing in tune and in time is some sort of superhuman skill, that you can only reproduce with the help of a computer. No, people, human beings did this by themselves. Human beings can still do this by themselves. You just need to work harder.

Asia & BJ, The Godfather of Soul, Soul Brother #1 and The Hardest Working Man In Show Business pretty much single-handedly invented "FUNK!!!" He epitomized soul music and put funkiness in all of his jams!!! The man could dance his tail off too!!! His band called The JB's and his main horn player Maceo Parker were always on-point!!! He demanded excellence from all who worked & performed with him because when he performed, sang & danced, he left it all out there on the stage...His shows were second to none!!! And yes that was a Trumpet 🎺... Mic-Drop!!! 🎤

Maceo Parker on sax, Bootsy Collins was a J.B ( his backup band ) Bootsy and his brother Catfish waited outside of King Records studios here in Cincinnati ( Walnut Hills ) to audition for James during his break between recordings.
@joeday4293
@joeday4293 Жыл бұрын
Heh. And Bootsy was so broke, he was playing a cheap six-string electric guitar restrung with four bass strings. James Brown said in his autobiography (a book ALL Y'ALL oughta read) that he called Bootsy into his office and told him that he would like to hire him, but he couldn't take a bass player with such a janky instrument on tour with him. Bootsy's face fell. Then JB reached under his desk and pulled out a guitar case and said, "So I guess you'll just have to play this brand new Fender Precision Bass instead." Can you imagine not only getting the gig as James Brown's bass player at age 19, but having him seal the deal by giving you a brand new instrument?

James Brown’s greatest work was 1970-1971, his funk period. In my opinion this was his best work. His “new” band at the time included Bootsy & Catfish Collins who would later join Funkadelic and eventually form Bootsy’s Rubber Band. Ironically their best work as a unit were one off singles that were not included on his albums which leaned toward traditional soul, gospel, blues, and jazz.

Growing up in Roxbury, Massachusetts, when saying, “bad!”, became a way to describe something outstanding, we didn’t have to explain it. Because it was the way we said it as opposed to the then common use of the word to describe something or someone that was not considered good.

Mick Jagger said he never danced harder on a stage than in his lame attempt to match James Brown on that show. All by itself on merit, it would have been one of Jagger's finest stage performances ever. But up against James Brown, it was lacking, and no one will tell you that quicker than Mick Jagger. Having to share a stage with the Godfather of Soul at the peak of his powers terrified him down to his English-white-boy bones. LOL
