A good point, but all the best blues singers were hearing it as pure experience separated from US cultural baggage by being British, and then lighting it up with this freedom they'd never had before. They really had nothing like the blues and rock in the UK so it pollinated into....basically all the best of classic rock.

Not many people were able to improve a Beatles song, this is how a cover should be, a whole different vibe than the original.
@RadeticDaniel
@RadeticDaniel 2 жыл бұрын
I still like the original Beatles arrangement better, but you are right about one thing, Joe Cocker's covers are a work of his own in arranging and interpreting. So many of his versions like You Are So Beautiful and Unchain My Heart for me are the best versions of each song =D And his version of With a Little Help From My Friends is easily the second best recording of it by far!!!

@joelmeeks8683

So while this song resonates with the Beatles version he took blue eyed soul before it's time and prog rock and whatever Joe singing really is like and mushed it into something quite original. Still feels like rock similar to ELP and BTO and guess who but at the same time rock was soul sped up and this was just rock slowed down so to speak.

I get fuckin' chills! Every. Damn. Time!!! But my favorite part, is probably when the camera pans over to Mama Cass Elliot's face in the audience a couple times, and you can see her jaw just drop and her mouth, "WOW!" Janis was one of a kind, man...

If you watch some of his live performances closely, you'll see there's a purpose behind every spastic move he makes. He's following every note played by every instrument. The other live performance of this with Leon Russell is better to view that.

Old Beatles song, that he covered, and made it a huge hit. John Lennon said, "I guess this song now belongs to Joe, our (Beatles) good friend." He actually had another hit written by The Beatles, "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window". Joe Cocker is a British "Soul singer" that died in the last few years at about age 75 I think. What a voice.

Paul Mc Cartney always said Joe's was the best version. I wouldn't call him a soul singer at all.., more blues . He had a lot of soul yes, but 2 different things . Try Delta Lady . Joe was from Sheffield, a very tough industrial steel town in the North of England Another great band from there is Def Leppard . Try Pour some sugar on me . by them.. Their drummer has only one arm. This was a cover of a Beatles song. I hope you know who the Beatles are if not please find out who they are. Joe Cocker did a lot of covers and did them his way. One of my favourites by him is Delta Lady. This genre is ROCK. Rock is a fusion of a number of different influences. Blues, jazz, folk, classical and even Medieval music. Music wasn't pidgen holed back then like it is today. If you can find the version with Leon Russell or the Woodstock version it is even better. Cheers

The great Joe Cocker. Rip! If I had the opportunity, I would've gone to see this man sing just one song. He's that good.

Since I am a child of the late 70's-80's and my parents are of the 40's-50's. I grew up listening to this music period a lot. All I can think from this song is The Wonder Years show.

He's going inside out and reaches within the listener. You can not touch people on a soul level if your gift is not coming from a mutually deep place. A gem is right!

I love how you seem like a college professor and i love your open heart and mind, and then I’m surprised that someone who seems so worldly has never heard of some of the most amazing music. But all respect to you for rectifying that! Well done, and keep up the good work!

When I hear the music of my generation late 60s into 70s I realize how blessed we were to have experienced Joe Crocker, Temptations, Smokey, Janis, Jimi ad infinitum... it was an incredible time for music. I'm glad you enjoyed Joe Cocker... I see what you mean about Chris Stapleton!! Love music and I'm a 77 year old white lady!
