She was an awesome drummer !! But her and her brother made beautiful music together just beautiful ! You need to hear them live just as amazing !! Her voice just moved you ... so emotional ... It’s a shame we lost Karen to an eating disorder so was so picked on about her weight and how she looked it’s a shame we lost such a beautiful soul and there will never be another like her again ..

No one but no one had a voice like Karen Carpenter. No one has ever come close. Not only was her voice unique but she could convey emotion that just reached into you soul. And why? Because she understood pain and loneliness because unbeknownst to the world, she was in pain and lonely. Another tragic story unfolds regarding her but her voice soars regardless every time it's played. Thank you for choosing it. Another classic of theirs is Goodbye To Love. 👍

I think the saddest line from any Carpenter song is a line from 'Only Yesterday', where it says "In my own time nobody knew the pain I was going through..." The song wasn't necessarily about Karen's pain, but it just makes one think of that, what she must have suffered in silence. So, so sad. 🥺

Richard and Karen Carpenter were sister and brother -- the band was called The Carpenters. They were born in Connecticut, but moved to Southern California fairly young and lived about 15 minutes away from where I grew up in Westminster, California (still live here). Karen was about a decade older than me, but when she died so young, right here in the area I live in, my heart was broken. It still is every time I listen to her angelic voice. Without the celebrity status she achieved she never would have become anorexic and would probably still be with us today, but then we would have been denied her incredible talent. I guess we should at least just be happy that we are blessed to have all of the wonderful recordings she made. Such a sad story.

I was 15 years old in the summer of 1982 when I had a chance encounter with Karen. I stepped in line behind her at a local pharmacy on the coast of Maine. It's a common summer getaway for some celebrities so not surprising she was there, but she was sooo skinny and frail. She had a nice outfit on, like she was going sailing. I was pretty shook when she turned and looked at me, I'm sure my face said it all. She left quickly and the girl behind the counter and I just kinda looked at each other in disbelief. Haunts me to this day every time I here the Carpenters. I wasn't surprised when she passed away a few months later, sad and tragic end to one of the greatest talents of the 70's.

I’m 39 and I’ve never heard of the carpenters before until now. Someone on Facebook put a picture of Karen saying that she had the best voice ever. So I looked her up found out she passed away when I was 2. I played one of their songs called “they long to be close to you”. I listen to it And thought, damn this song is so pretty, it makes you want to cry and smile all at the same time. I bought some of their music plus I’m reading a book called little girl blue. Her voice was so beautiful I just love it.

Karen Carpenter and her brother were very popular during the 70s. There is a documentary about them. Every song they sang was beautiful and pure and they made many. Pure talent. Just beautiful music.❤️

Karen had a flawless voice. It was a shame she lost her battle at age 32 to anorexia nervosa. Thank goodness for recordings. Her brother, Richard, is the music organizer and pianist and he's still living but doesn't perform publicly anymore. Karen passed away in Feb. of 1983. Great loss to the music industry. She was on the road to recovery and was at her parents home in Downey, Ca. getting ready to go shopping when she collapsed in her closet. EMTs worked with her but couldn't bring her back. She succumbed to cardiac arrest. A huge loss. Anorexia was not common then and she hid hers well. She was NEVER overweight but in her mind, she was. She had gained about 15lbs. since she had been working on recovery from her disease but her heart had gotten use to her frail, very tiny body and just couldn't handle the stress of it all and it tired out. Very sad tragedy. Her brother is standing beside her as she is singing in this video. He is a masterful music composer, songwriter and arranger.

The Carpenters were a brother and sister duo, that had a lot of hits all through the 1970's. They are from Downey California. Karen and her brother Richard played music together thru their childhood and eventually formed a band and started playing gigs through out California. Karen was originally the drummer for the group, while Richard stayed on keybooards. This was their first #1 hit. They had alot of hit albums and songs through out the 1970's. Sherry Thomas There’s a great documentary on KZfaq about their journey and it’s narrated by Richard. I can’t remember the exact name but it’s about a hour and half long. He goes into great detail about everything, starting out, discovering Karen’s ability and her struggles of being famous. I didn’t know that the song “ superstar “ was supposed to be about her little affair with Eric Clapton! She definitely was a unbelievably talented woman. Really tragic and sad her life had to end the way it did. I doubt that I will ever live to see and hear another voice like she had.

If silk could sing, it would sound like Karen. I've heard some beautiful female voices, but none like hers.

This song was written by Paul Williams and was used in a wedding-themed advert for Crocker National Bank in 1970, with Williams singing. The song played over footage of a young couple getting married and just starting out together. Crocker National's business flourished thanks to the ad. The Carpenters took it and turned it into a big hit

They made it to the top when hard rock was the thing. They (Richard and Karen Carpenter who were brother and sister) were the first to make the "Multi-Harmony Overdoubing" sound famous. That is the sound like there are many people singing, but it is all just Karen and Richard. Just recorded many times, and many notes. They also were the ones to make a power- balid big. , when they put the electric Guitar in the love song "Goodbye to love" BTW- Karen though of herself as a drummer who could sing. She thought of herself as a drummer first. And many don't know that she was on her way to recovery from Anorexia, when she passed. She did use syrup of ipecac during that time, but the way they re-feed her back then, was too much for her heart. Now they re-fed using a soft diet, to keep the body to stop "refeeding syndrome" from taking place . Which is fairly new, when it comes to treating the (Physical) issues of Anorexia. Actually, even when I was in treatment in for my anorexia, in the late 80's and early 90's, they were still not using this kind of re-feeding. Plus, they put a feeding tube directly into hear heart which actually punctured her lungs. it was very dangerous for her. Plus, she was still married to Tom Burris . and was going to sign the divorce papers later the day she passed. BTW- he was a jerk! He took all of her money and lied to her about having money, being self sufficient, and even lied to her about wanting children, and not having a vasectomy. He treated her like shit!!!! She deserved someone so much better! She was so loved, and so missed!!!!

karend169 lots of those songs from the early 70's I still listen to them but they do have a sadness maybe because back then we were young with no worries.

I feel so lucky that I grew up in the 70s. The music back then was so pure and fresh. You should check out Superstar by them. Nice reaction, guys.
