"They just wild." Best description of Kiss there is. When these guys were massive in the 70s, they were never seen without the make-up. It was a mystery what they looked like as human beings and everyone wanted to know. These guys were pretty savvy tho in the marketing of the band and they hid their real faces through the majority of their career. Later in the 80s when they were already considered legends, but not really as popular, lo and behold, they show their real faces and stir up all new attention. It's hard to describe how iconic Kiss is. You can't talk about music history or pop culture and leave this band out, so it's a good thing you're checking them out.

In the 70's and most of the 80's nobody knew what they looked like, they had a huge stage production and mythology behind their characters, there are even comic books and a movie. They didn't reveal their faces until sometime in the late 80's I think, I might be wrong on that and I'm sure somebody will correct me, but for the majority of my childhood as a KISS fan in the 70's and 80's I had no idea what they really looked like, you never saw them without the makeup.

This was a “re-release” of their song at the time, for the first time showing their faces without the painted faces. The painted faces was part of a marketing gimmick, where for years no one really knew who they were. They had great concerts. This was liked a lot by preteen boys at the time, which was different to us older teens and Led Zeppelin and Cream, Deep Purple. But Kiss did work hard to garner their fans. An aside, for most of their early career touring they toured with the band Rush a lot.

This video was a career representation of Kiss from the 70's to the 80's. The track was from their live album 'Alive!' from 1975 w/ the original Kiss line-up - Paul Stanley (vocals/guitar), Gene Simmons (vocals & bass - 'Rock and roll all nite' was him singing lead), Ace Frehley (lead guitar) & Peter Criss (drums)... Kiss debuted in 1974 and the band wanted to give a show in concert, so they painted their faces w/ makeup and assumed characters that represented their personalities (Alice Cooper did it w/ his stage character wearing black face paint). Paul Stanley was the rock star 'starchild'... Gene Simmons was the 'demon' w/ the huge tongue, who would breathe fire and spit blood... Peter Criss was the 'catman' whose drums would rise above the stage... Ace Frehley was the 'spaceman' who would play a 'smoking guitar' and shoot bottle rockets... They would have fire, pyro and small bombs going off during their concerts. Despite being a touring live attraction between 1974 & '75, Kiss' three studio albums were not selling... They decided to release a double live album 'Alive!' in 1975, and it took off, selling platinum that year and saved Kiss and their label from bankruptcy... Kiss' next three albums each sold platinum and they were voted the top rock band in 1977. But by 1978, the band was exhausted from their workload... Kiss did a movie, and their images were merchandised on everything from toys & games, to radios and makeup kits. In 1978, each member opted to release a solo album under the Kiss logo... every member now did vocals in the band. Ace Frehley's solo album sold the best... In 1979, Kiss returned w/ the 'Dynasty' album, but had embraced a disco sound... they also realized that merchandising Kiss brought kids to their shows and alienated their hardcore fanbase. Peter Criss was also struggling w/ addictions and couldn't play on Kiss records by '79... In 1980, Kiss recorded another disco album without him and he was out of the band... Drummer Eric Carr replaced him and assumed a 'fox' character. Frustrated by Kiss' lack of creativity and struggling w/ addictions, Ace Frehley left the band in 1982. Vinnie Vincent joined on lead guitar and took a 'wizard' character. But Kiss popularity was at a low point by 1983 and neither their records nor their concerts were selling. In 1983, Kiss made the decision to take off the makeup to reintroduce themselves to MTV... this was Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Eric Carr & Vinnie Vincent... and it worked. The non-makeup album 'Lick it up' became a platinum success...but Vinnie Vincent was fired by 1984. Lead guitarist Mark St. John joined briefly, but health problems kept him from touring, so Bruce Kulick (lead guitar) joined in '84. Kiss became a success in the 80's glam rock era without the makeup, releasing 5 albums going gold or platinum. Tragically, drummer Eric Carr was diagnosed w/ cancer and passed away in late 1991 😪 Kiss hired drummer Eric Singer in 1992, but despite having a gold album that year, Kiss' popularity was declining on tour in the 90's decade... An MTV 'Unplugged' show in 1995 brought original members Peter Criss and Ace Frehley for a few songs. The decision was made to reunite the original Kiss in 1996 to tour in makeup and costumes of the 70's. The Kiss "Alive '96/ '97" tour brought the original Kiss back together for a world tour that was a huge success. The band released the 'Psycho circus' album in 1998, but apparently problems kept Ace & Peter out of the studio and session musicians were used... Despite their success, it was evident that Ace & Peter would not work out (same problems in the 70's came back in the 90's) so Kiss announced a 'Farewell tour' in 2000/ '01... Peter Criss could not do the final shows of the tour, so Eric Singer (drums) returned to play the shows in Criss' 'catman' makeup. Ace Frehley left the band in 2002, and Tommy Thayer (lead guitar) assumed Ace's 'spaceman' makeup. Peter Criss returned briefly in 2003 for a tour w/ Aerosmith. Kiss opted to relaunch the band in 2004 w/ Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer & Eric Singer, touring in makeup. They released 2 studio albums in 2009 and 2012... but age being a factor (Paul & Gene are 70 yrs of age) ...Kiss announced their 'End of the road' tour from 2019...but the pandemic has delayed tour dates going into 2022.

I think they had Cheap Trick as their opening act when I saw them the first time. Those makeup era concerts were a blast. They were the tail end of Glam Rock with their makeup and Cat, Starchild, Spaceman and Demon identities, with Gene and his fire-breathing boots and shooting flames and blood out of his mouth. For kids in that dark phase of life it was the perfect band to absorb all of that teenaged angst.

Theatrics Baby! Imagine my dad's face back in the 70's when I said I loved them 🤣🤣☺️ He was mortified...THAT is what these guys are about, showmanship. Love KISS ... great song to start with as it was known as the Rock & Roll National Anthem, and still is their most known track. This music video is a little disjointed tho b/c it's a compilation using footage from a bunch of other videos all spliced together. That's why sometimes you see them with their makeup on & sometimes not. After being prob the most popular American hard rock band of the 70s, there was a period in the 80s when they stopped wearing it, but they put it back on in 1996 and have worn it ever since. Some other key heavy tracks from KISS: Detroit Rock City, Black Diamond & I Love It Loud. But they also did other stuff: an rock/disco song called I Was Made For Lovin' You, a ballad with an orchestra called Beth and an acoustic, almost country song called Hard Luck Woman. All worth checking out. Y'all keep doing what you're doing.

That’s not clown makeup. Gene Simmons is the one spitting blood is known as the demon and plays bass. The one with the star on his face is Paul Stanley lead vocals. The other guitarist is Ace Frehley ( pronounced freely) is the spaceman character is lead guitarist. Peter Criss is the Catman on drums. Nobody knew what they looked like until in the 80’s they took their makeup off for a short period of time.

Your statement "They just wild", was spot on. The early 70s, when they burst on the scene, was set back on it's heels. Parents and authority figures went nuts. All kinds of false things were being said about them and their music. Founders, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley said they wanted to perform the kind of show that THEY had wanted to see, when they were in the audience. Love them or hate them, they were HUGE back in the day. The makeup gave them personalities, as a group and as individuals. Gene is definitely the most theatrical one, in my opinion. They overcame a lot of criticism, which only made their fans more rabid. They eventually got rid of the makeup, but then started using it again. It's great theater. They put on a heck of a show. The people that are from that generation, started taking their own teenage kids to KISS concerts. So for lots of people, it turned into a family event. Anyway, I can go on and on. Enjoyed your reactions. Peace!

Kiss was a performance band. Everyone talked about how good they were live but there studio albums didn't catch on. My favorite band my whole life. Started listening to them in 1974 when I was 4 years old. Hopefully you will keep reacting to more of their songs. I can recommend two of my favorite performances by them. First from 1975, they were just getting going and played a song live on TV, look up this to do your reaction (KISS - Black Diamond - 1975 promo (High Quality)). Remember the time period. Not all the special effects that we have today. Just pure rock. The second one is one of the best vocal performances I've ever heard. From 1996 look this up for your reaction (Kiss - I Still Love You (Live) - 4 - 700). Neither will disappoint.

KISS wore the makeup and coustumes from 1973-1983,then took the makeup off from mid 1983-1995. The 4 original members got back together in 1996 and they put the makeup and costumes back on and still wear them to this day in 2022.however only 2 of the original members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons (the Starchild and Demon respectively) are the only 2 original members and cofounders of the band still in KISS. They've gone through several lineup changes with drummers and lead guitarists since 1980. They've actually sold over 100,000,000 records and have sold the most gold albums out of ANYBODY and their merchandising is well known and huge! You guys DEFINITELY need to watch an react to MORE KISS with and without the makeup.

KISS wore makeup from 1973-1983, then put it back on in 1996. So any clips that shows them without makeup are from late 1983-1995. Any band that used makeup or masks after 1973 probably were inspired by KISS and/or Alice Cooper. This video was on a home video called eXposed, which came out in 1987. Gene Simmons has been spitting blood and fire since the beginning. It's part of his Demon character and what he does during his bass solo. He does the fire bit at the end of a song called Firehouse.

But the face paint was just something they wanted to do to be different along with the stage antics like the blood, and the smoking guitar. Ace had a switch on his Les Paul that ignited a smoke effect at the neck pick up cavity. It really shows the reliable quality of Gibson guitars that stay in tune even when they are rigged with stage pyrotechnical effects. Ace needed to move around the stage with that guitar to avoid breathing in the smoke every night, just as Gene had to make sure his hair was tightened up before he breathed fire.

A lot of this video is actually taking place during a documentary they made inside of Paul Stanley's house around 1987. Kiss "exposed". The girls on the wall that look like "deer heads" are live girls sticking their head through holes in the the wall for show. Gene even made them change places when he didn't like the order that they appeared in. It's pretty funny

KISS, from 1975 to around 1982, was the biggest band around. Period. They put on a terrific show/concert. The costumes and makeup was to differentiate them from other bands. The costumes and makeup also represent different characters for each member.

On the 1996 Kiss Unplugged album, each of the original band members sang a line of this song as they played it on acoustic instruments. Can you please react to the music video Suicide Blonde by Inxs . I love your channel keep up the great work 🙂

The 1960's was the generation where the kids were really into watching Monster and Sci-fi movies, if you look at the Band's makeup, you'll see that they had those genre's completely covered, add some good rock music and they were the right band, at the right time.

When they formed the band they said it seemed boring to just stand up there and sing, they wanted the audience to see something they've never seen before. So they had explosions and different stage theatrics and they each took on the role of a character on stage. Gene was the demon, that's why he would sometimes have blood coming out of his mouth or he also would spit fire.

Saw them in 83 at a venue with no security barrier and was literally leaning on the stage apron 2 feet from Gene's Dragon Boots. Even got some of Gene's "blood" on me! Best live show ever! ( a little microdot helped! ;o) )

Don't think anyone has mentioned this yet: Kiss loved groupies! In an interview, Gene Simmons claims to have taken polaroids (that was a camera of the day that printed out pictures from the camera itself) of over 1,000 women / groupies in various forms of dress and undress. And the music was pretty cool, too.

Until around 1983(?) they never did appearances and were never photographed without their makeup. They then played without it until putting it back on for the reunion tour in 1996, and they've been playing with it ever since- just now they obviously don't make a big secret of what they look like anymore.

What's great is that even though this is a music video, the music is actually recorded from a concert. This is the best version of the song, the original studio version doesn't have a guitar solo in it. Fun fact, Ace Frehley was actually asked about why there wasn't a guitar solo in the song during an interview and he didn't even realize that there wasn't one in it lol.

The original members of Kiss were huge fans of Alice Cooper, Alice always wore make-up and had costumes during his concerts, So they wanted to do that, Just bigger. Gene became the Demon, Paul became the Starchild, Peter became the Catman, And Ace the Spaceman. Later they also had Eric Carr, The Fox, and Vinnie Vincent, The Egyption Warrior. In 1983 they made their biggest decision, Take the make-up off. This coming after a decline in their popularity, And 2 OG member leaving in just a short period. They went through a couple line-up changes until 1996 when they got the OG line-up together again and put on their outfits and war paint. They still were their outfits and makeup, Just Gene and Paul are the only original members. Also, About the guitar being on fire, It was a signature Ace thing he started doing in 1975, And still does today. Just a smoke bomb and a light in the pick-up cavity

Gene Simmons is the demon because he grew up loving horror movies and named himself after a female movie actress by the name of Jean Simmons. Paul Stanley is the Starchild, as in he wanted to be a big star (in the rock and roll world and on stage). Peter Criss really loves cats and transformed himself into the cat man. Ace Frehley became the Spaceman because he's into science and astronomy . They all had their own things that they did on stage every night as the ultimate live performers. Gene Simmons breathes fire and spits blood, Paul Stanley talks to the crowd between all the songs, danced around a lot, got people excited, got people going, smashed his guitar at the end of the show. Ace Frehley played a really great guitar solo with a smoke bomb going off in his guitar, Peter Criss did a big drum solo with his drum riser going up into the air. They always tried to put on the show that they wished they could have seen when they were younger

Its based on Japanese Kabuki makeup...one reason it was done was so the band xcould stay anonymous...and no one ever was allowed to photograph them with out the makeup...each member designed their makeup to match their personality.

As others have said, KISS was the ultimate live band. Their concerts were legendary. Gene Simmons would spit blood and breathe fire. And they were inspired by groups like the New York Dolls. So that's partly where their costumes and make-up came from. Before Slipknot and Marilyn Manson, there were groups like KISS and performers like Alice Cooper. They were the original shock rockers. There even used to be a rumor that KISS stood for Knights In Satan's Service. It wasn't true, of course, but it was great publicity for them. They were a huge band in the 70's.
