There is no better way to start. But hard to find something that gets close. Jonas Kaufmann is really really good and Juan Diego Flórez might get to be the new Pavarotti one day.

"Nessun dorma" (Italian: [nesˌsun ˈdɔrma]; English: "Let no one sleep") is an aria from the final act of Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot (text by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni) and one of the best-known tenor arias in all opera. It is sung by Calaf, il principe ignoto (the unknown prince), who falls in love at first sight with the beautiful but cold Princess Turandot. Any man who wishes to wed Turandot must first answer her three riddles; if he fails, he will be beheaded. In the aria, Calaf expresses his triumphant assurance that he will win the princess. None shall sleep! None shall sleep! Not even you, oh Princess, in your cold bedroom, watching the stars that tremble with love, and with hope! But my secret is hidden within me; no one will know my name! No, no! On your mouth, I will say it when the light shines! And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine! Just before the climactic end of the aria, a chorus of women is heard singing in the distance: No one will know his name, and we will have to, alas, die, die! Calaf, now certain of victory, sings: Vanish, o night! Fade, you stars! Fade, you stars! At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!

There is no better or worse being a tenor is a feat meant for very few mere mortals. There was only one pavarotti, just as there was only one caruso or domingo . The difference with pavarotti voice was. Not just attractive to opera houses. But also for the generic listener and that to me is what seperated him from the others, his voice had it all.

I have a mother who has dementia and she doesn't respond to things the way she used to . . . things that she used to watch on TV or made her laugh, she doesn't really pay much attention anymore. I know people with dementia respond to music so I'm always trying to think of ways to stimulate her. She knew Pavarotti . . . and when I showed her this video of you reacting to Pavarotti's voice, she smiled and laughed. She kept commenting about your eyes bugging out when he hit the big notes. It brought me joy to see her react and to smile. So I want to give you a special thank you for your reaction! It was very entertaining. So much so, it even connected with my Mom. That says a lot.

There is so much more to opera than just the songs. There is pageantry and grace and drama and acting and singing and costumes and sets. Beauty is part of every experience in opera. I miss going to the opera. I love to dress rather formally and treat it as a date experience with my partner. I recommend giving it a try when pandemics fade and allow us to experience it live again.

I enjoyed looking at you enjoying! I listened to so many Tenors throughout my whole life, and I was born in 1952 (Del Monaco, Corelli, Di Stephano, Vickers, Kaufmann, Domingo, Carrera, Giacomini, etc.). I started to listen to them at a very early age (4-5 years old) I always preferred Pavarotti!... The presentation you are listening to right now is his best performance of that aria, and it established a standard that nobody else could match so far (in my opinion and taste of course).

You just listened to the greatest Opera tenor in the world. Sadly he has passed away but fortunately we have his recordings and will be able to share them with generations to come. No one can listen to this without having some kind of an emotional response.
