Metallica played select concerts w/ a full concert orchestra back in 1999 w/ (the late) composer Michael Kamen as the symphony conductor... 'No leaf clover' (and another song 'minus (-) human') was written specifically to be performed w/ the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra for the concert... so this track here is Metallica live w/ the San Francisco Symphony. The rest of the concert was Metallica playing their classic songs enhanced by the orchestra... it was released in '99 as the 'S&M' double CD. Their symphonic rendition of Metallica's instrumental track 'The call of Ktulu' is definitely an incredible live rendition.

Its worth watching the video of this performance. It was the original S&M (1999) one-off concert in Berkeley with the San Francisco Symphony; conductor was the late great Micheal Kamen who is known for writing orchestrated symphony music for several rock bands. No Leaf Clover was written by Metallica and arranged by Micheal Kamen specifically for this concert collaboration and this was the very first time it was ever performed in public and only time the SFOSO was behind them until S&M2 a few years ago... the first one is by far the best.

I use to listen to this song addictively back in 1999 2000. It was a live version. Over and over again it was just very catchy.

Love that you reacted to this. Any song from the original S&M in 1999, audio, video.. anything.. gets a thumbs up from me. This was a live performance but with the sound quality of a studio recording.

Metallica has endless hits which makes it tough to pick a favorite song, but if I had to pick one…it’d be this song. The lyrics are fairly simple but with the orchestra mixed eight band mixed with the lyrics, amazing to say the least.

The lyrics say at one point "looking for a quick reward" and that's pretty much what it's about. Trying to make it big too fast and then it all falls appart as opposed to paying your dues and doing it the right way.

I wouldn't have chosen a symphonic performance as a first introduction to Metallica. What you must, must, must react to is Metallica playing 'Enter Sandman' in Moscow in 1991 as a celebration of the fall of the Soviet Union. 1.6 Million people at a Russian airfield. The helicopters are flying low to ventilate the massive crowd. Security had to be provided by the Russian Army. EDIT: You already did!

As for most bands, the older the song the better... when the music was raw and natural and not over produced and the band was more genuine, before all the influences and control from outside the band.

This would have been better with only the band. Orchestral accompaniment can take a Rock or Metal song to a higher level; that is, if the sound is cohesive, making the song better. This is like two different songs played at the same time.
