This song is based on a book/movie called Johnny Got His Gun. It’s about a soldier who was drafted into WW1 and accidentally steps on a landmine and he gets blown up. He lost his arms, legs, sight, hearing and ability to speak. But he is still cognizant in his mind. This whole song is sung from the soldiers perspective and how it’s an absolute hell to be only able to lie there in darkness and your thoughts

First as a yank across the pond let me welcome you to the legends that are metallica. These guys are now in their sixties and still selling out stadiums and arenas around the world. Second I've been to twenty-one of their shows spanning forty years and not once was I ever disappointed. Third react to "fade to black" I would suggest looking up the meaning of their songs on google, it will take your reactions to the next level. As a disabled army veteran this song "one" hits hard. Thanks for a great reaction mate! Peace from America.

I love your reactions to Metallica. Every one of their songs has a meaning whether deep or not. You will always find something you can relate to in one or more of their songs. 'One' is inspired by the 1939 book Johnny Got His Gun and is about a WW1 soldier. He wakes up a prisoner in his own body after losing his arms, legs, senses etc therefore cannot speak etc. A very deep and powerful song. Welcome to the Metallica family ❤

Your reaction to these Metallica songs is similar to my ten year old's reaction. When I show him the music I like to listen to, he's amazed. He's growing up in an era where most music is over produced, techno at its core, and unfeeling. Everything happens in cycles, and I think to the generation that has grown up with today's music, this type of music is like a breath of fresh air. I remember discovering an oldies station on the radio when I was kid. They were playing rock 'n roll from the 70's, and that guitar work just blew me away! Then I discovered Metallica and it was all over. That was it. MY BAND.

The cover on his fave is because when the bomb went off it not only took his arms and legs it took parts of his face, so the mask protects his injuries from the elements around him it hides them. He can't speak because of the airway he has in, which is what she pinches off to end his suffering and let's him die. The video is about being trapped inside of yourself and not being able to do anything to fix it, so he wanted to die to end all the pain he felt that they thought he didn't. I hope that helps, and welcome to the world of Metallica, one of the best heavy metal bands of all time.

The song is about a soldier who got hit by a missile or activated a landmine and basically had his legs arms and face blown off. They kept him on the machines, just a body stump without any limbs. He was in his own private hell but he could not express himself except doing a morse code with parts of his body to the bed. Its based on the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" which is an anti-war fiction inspired by TRUE and gruiesome story of one canadian that ended up in World War I.

Another great reaction friend. Some fun facts about this song: - It's based off an old movie called "Johnny Got His Gun" which is based off a true story. The details are tragic. - This was their first ever music video and it remains, to this day, one of the most powerful pieces of art ever recorded. - This led to them being invited to play this at the Grammy's. First metal band ever. The performance was an emotional roller coaster going from nervous wrecks to legends. - And Justice For All was the first album recorded with new bassist Jason Newstead, replacing Cliff Burton who was tragically killed in a bus accident. The bass on this album was internationally nerfed, which was indicitive of a level of treatment that would ultimately lead to Newstead quitting the band a little over a decade later. Thanks for the video friend. On to Fade 2 Black 🍻🍻

James Hetfield lead singer, guitar, writer of most lyrics. He had a very tortured childhood that haunted him most of his life. Still with him but music, Metallica, and therapy got him through and still killing it at 60 yo. I just saw them in August, for the 15th time live and there is Nothing Nothing comparable to the epic experience of Metallica live Nothing. James older brother told him about the book this movie is based on. James has said that he understood and respected the difference of what war took from this man he also understood what if felt like to be trapped in your body feeling unheard having no voice tortured and in pain he could not express. He expressed that by writing One. James taught himself to play guitar and to this day cannot read music. He is a musical genius and an amazing human because that bad ass MF pours his heart and soul out to us all in the most vulnerable way. Kirk Hammett lead guitar The Ripper, self taught fricken genius wrote riff to Creeping Death when he was SIXTEEN years old. Ranked one of the greatest guitarists of all time rightly so and one of the kindness genuine humble humans on Earth. They have been together since they were 17, over 40 years, Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, endless awards, millions sold, Millionaires, give millions to charities, so Talented accomplished so much every right to be big head ego ass holes but it is All about the Music All about the Fans, All about playing Live and giving everyone single person the most incredible literal life changing experience Greatest Bsnd Ever I subscribed because at 53 I am Stoked to see you experiencing them your emotion appreciation respect it is raw and genuine. They are still touring I cannot imagine them ever stopping. Baby you MUST SEE METALLICA LIVE. Make it happen. Also, to get to know them, youtube interviews. They changed my life, got me through life. There was a comic book I read as a kid where a soldier was given a necklace from a gypsy or someone like that and told as long as he wore it, he wouldn’t die. He thought it meant he couldn’t be hurt. He was blown up in combat and lost his arms and legs. Couldn’t talk. He could hear what was going on around him and the Drs saw the medallion around his neck. In his mind he was begging them to take it off. One Dr said “ I can’t believe he’s alive” the other said “ This must be a good luck charm. Let’s leave it on him.”

As others have mentioned, the song is inspired by the novel "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo, which was ironically first published on 3 September 1939 (the date the UK and France declared war on Nazi Germany over the invasion of Poland). Trumbo, who wrote the screenplays for such Hollywood classics as Spartacus, Exodus and Papillion also wrote and directed the movie adaptation of Johnny Got His Gun, which is featured heavily in this video. Metallica are in the unusual position of holding the rights to the movie as the fee for buying it was only fractionally more than the licence to use the excerpts in this video and avoided them having to pay future royalties. A 2009 release of the film on DVD in North America actually includes the video for "One". The video went on to win a Grammy for "Best Metal Performance" at the 1989 Grammys with Lars somewhat sarcastically thanking Jethro Tull for not releasing anything that year in the bands acceptance speech after somewhat controversially losing to them the previous year in the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance category for the album ...And Justice For All.

Ok... so the movie bits are from a movie called "Johnie got his gun" its about a guy who grows up and goes to war, where he is wounded. Hes obviously lost his arms, legs, and ability to see, hear and speak... the only thing left of him is his brain. The song is about losing everything to war for the individual soldier. Now, if you want to hear a great Metallica instrumental, check out "Orion"

Same as you're new to Metallica, I'm new to your channel. I'm glad you've finally discovered them, Metallica is an epic band absolutely worth of hearing. If you'd like to hear another war song, but not one with the fake bravery, but rather the one that describes all the horror and hell that war is, I'd suggest you react to '1914 - The Hundred Days Offensive'. Writing this as a lifelong Metallica fan from a country that's currently at war.

HOW did I miss your reaction to this??? This is my ALL-TIME FAVORITE Metallica song. "Banger" doesn't even do this song justice.

The book Johnny Got His Gun about WW1 was one of three banned for Allied troops to read during WW2. The other two were enemy propaganda. He was kept alive indefinitely for religious reasons, for scientific interest, and for the pride of the medical profession then in their ability to “save” lives.

This was my first Metallica experience seeing this video on MTV in my teenage years, many years ago. Few songs have ever impacted me harder, the definition of living Hell. Now 30 years later as a Veteran who has fought in a war I am truly grateful for not having such a fate. ❤

Digging back into your evolution to the dark side now, having just found your channel not long ago. I'm probably not the first to mention it but this was Metallica's first video. They were very against doing a music video and I'm happy to look back over the decades and acknowledge this was an epic first. Really heavy metal, and especially thrash, was a rough road to getting mainstream attention. MTV was about the only ticket back then, but they weren't playing music like this. Local radio stations, especially college or even HS, were where we heard bands like this on the regular. Word of mouth was still the primary way.

Yes, I was a teenager when Master of Puppets came out and I ordered a bunch of cassettes for the 12 cassettes for a penny they used to do. I just picked it on a whim. I fell in love with Metallica immediately and introduced all my friends and anyone who would listen to it. The next thing you know, Metallica was huge and everyone and their mother was listening to them, especially after this video

The video is from Johnny Got His Gun, the song is a war story based on the film. A statement on the dignity of death as opposed to the extension of life at the cost of the soul by science.

In the 1930s, the Book Johnny Got His Gun came out and it was banned for a time, seen as anti-American propaganda. In the 1970s the movie came out and it was seen as unpatriotic, they tried to get it banned again this time but were unsuccessful. In the 1980s this music video came out and no one tried to ban it because the nation couldn't deny the horrors of war any more.

Metallica bought the writes for the 70’s film version of the 20/30s book Johnnie got his gun as others have said. Using clips from the video was a great way to get across the story the song was based on. The father tells his son to remember his morse code, which at the end he uses (by banging his head on the pillow over and over and over again ) to communicate to the nurse that he wanted to die.

The brilliant thing about Metallica is the way they weave the music and topic together. I'm sure somebody's already commented on this but the end riff, with the drums, guitars, bass - they are supposed to sound like machine gun fire. Ingenious shit, truly. And if nobodies said so its from an incredibly sad, but important book about war (and movie) called "Johnny Got His Gun" about a troop who gets his arms, legs, eyes, voice, hearing - all of his sensory input blown away from him, and all he can do at the end - through morse code - is bang his head..."KILL ME.... KILL ME... KILL ME" and one nurse has the decency to pleasure him (hand job) and unplug him. He nearly gets his sweet release until a doctor comes in, fires her, and leave him alive inside his shell of a body, soul and mind for further experimentation. What a pisser. Just in case you didnt know. Its dark, depressing and probably happens. Metallica is the shit.
