Metallica bought the rights to the movie, so that they could include it in the video

One of the shining examples of Metal having meaning. Not JUST loud and harsh, but beautiful and meaningful as well. Great reaction.

The song was written after Hetfield saw Johnny Got His Gun. The protagonist, the titular Johnny, is horrifically mangled by a landline; often, men wounded by such lost limbs and their faces so damaged they couldn’t communicate; doctors would often place them in makeshift bed-crèches (where the word “basket-case” comes from). The film is one of the saddest things I have ever seen.

Dalton Trumbo wrote the book about WW1. It was banned during WW2 along with two other books which were enemy propaganda. The title was an ironic reference to a popular recruiting slogan “Johnny Get Your Gun.” Trumbo was blacklisted and destroyed for being unpatriotic when he was just being truthful. The end of the video is ironic too. The hospital staff singing about the lads far away when one was alone in the next room. Very heartfelt and understanding reaction and comments. Luv ya.❤

This song was my first Metallica experience as a teenager seeing it on MTV many years ago. Few songs have ever impacted me harder 😢, the definition of living Hell! Now thirty years later as a Veteran who has fought in a war I am truly grateful to not have had such a fate.

Based on a true event and then a movie, very heavy song and it speaks volumes for how incredible the band is!!

As hard as it may be to believe now, Metallica was a virtually underground band in their early days. No music videos or radio play. Then this was their first video on MTV. Powerful and haunting. But I was intimidated enough by the song to not look for more, I figured the rest of their songs sounded like the end of this one. I didn't hear more Metallica until the Black Album in 1991.

fun fact, whenever I listen to this song without the video, I still hear the movie quotes in my head at the spots they are at during the video. The movie is excellent and slightly unnerving for reasons i won't want to spoil for you, and the book is just as well written. I've both read the book and watched the film and can confirm that both are excellent!

I love it when someone who's never heard this song actually concentrates to it during a first listen. It's an amazing piece of music. I still say it's the greatest song ever recorded, by anyone. The song is like two or three songs/riffs but they morph from into one another seamlessly. The fabric of the song's entirety is expertly woven into a beautiful and brutal tapestry. Perfection.

They were initially not interested in making videos at all, but this being 'the MTV era' it was pretty much the only way your music got heard or seen, so they relented. The way this video was produced, blending both movie and their performance so seamlessly together, this video is a testament to the creative mind and stands the test of time all these 36 years later.

This is Metallica's first music video in a music commercial from the previous three albums which there were no video clips from the previous three albums and this song was the top clip on MTV at that time.

You know what's heavier than rocks? Metal 🤘

The detail that I notice people miss... the officer asks "Don't you have something to say *padre* " to which the padre (military chaplain, the priest) says "He's a product of your profession, not mine." Most people miss that this is a priest and an officer having this back and forth. This was a dialog between the military and religious institutions. The military asks religion to say something useful about the suffering veterans, and religion claps back with "Don't ask me. You created them, not me." In other words, the author/director is saying something... perhaps that the military institution is solely to blame for all the suffering veterans, and should bear all the responsibility. Perhaps he's saying not to blame God, but Humans for all the suffering of war. It's not entirely clear, and subject to interpretation, but there is a vaguely frofound statement in there... probably one I disagree with, but I appreciate the artistic expression and drama of it. Very good delivery of a worthwhile argument. Also, I bet the nurse represents the compassionate people of the working class, who can't bear the suffering and is willing to grant death. The whole thing is like a stage play where individuals represent entire categories of people. Social and political commentary abounds.

Great reaction to a great band/video. I've been checking out your channel for the last hour or so. You seem to have the ability to connect to the emotion the artists are putting forward, which is wonderful, as opposed to some reactors who are either stone faced or just plain overacting. I have posted some suggestions on other videos, and I will continue to do so as a sherpa familiar with '70s & '80s music. If you want to watch a great live performance, that might just leave you in tears at it's beautiful sadness, watch the re-mastered 1994 pulse concert video of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. A few warnings: Resist the urge to close your eyes and just get lost in the song (it will be HARD) because PF are masters of the light show, which is quite dramatic. David Gilmour only picks up his guitar twice, after he finishes singing "Comfortably numb". If you pause it while he is playing, you will get torched in the comment section and you will miss the emotion that he is pouring into your soul through that Strat. The final Instrumental (just over 4 minutes for your "earballs" to enjoy), which seems like a solo, but the entire band does not stop playing, but do so to emphasize and support his guitar work has brought many grown women and men to tears when it washes over them in waves. It's quite an experience.

Hands down the best reaction to this video. Seeing your emotional ride while you were soaking in the audio and video feels of the video was actually enthralling.

This is the first Metallica song that i remember watching on Mtv as a little kid in the early 90's, it scared the living hell out of me and i was afraid to watch it alone, but the insanely beautiful sound is what kept me watching it again and again. As i matured i really got to understand what a masterpiece this is

war buffs will notice that landmines weren't in use during ww1, and helos were used in korea and nam - although mines are referenced in the lyrics, and helo sounds are included in the opening. this makes the song more of a composite of all wars, rather than focused on just one, because the results are the same for those who fight them.

MTV would play all these happy videos then this would come on . I remember me and my friends watched this and laughed because they went hard core the DJ’s would be stunned 🤘🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾

Here's a fun fact... When this song/album was released in 1988, Justice for all album. Metallica played "One" live on the grammy awards show on stage. But they lost the award to Jethro Tool.

Greatest Music Video Ever!

Watching the movie makes everything make perfect sense. It's a heavy, and very thought provoking movie. The color scenes are when he's either dreaming or remembering. The black & white is his real time in the hospital. The reason he's there is because the doctors think he's brain dead and any involuntary movement would just be nerves. That is, until he started never ending Morse Code. They kept him alive to learn from him and help future wounded. Great reaction! Your face said it all! Also, Metallica eventually bought the rights to the movie so they could use it whenever they wanted.

This entire album (And Justice for All) is their first release following the tragic death of their original bassist Cliff Burton. He was killed in a bus accident while they were on tour in Europe. You can feel the grief and anger in every song.

It's not just that he can't remember what's going on. The explosion destroyed him. He lost both arms, both legs, his lower jaw and tongue, his eyes and his hearing. He has no senses but touch. He's alone in silent darkness. He's a universe of one.

I can highly recommend watching the movie. It's a trip but really good and impactful. The way they mixed it into the video in an ambient / dreamlike way really matches the movie

just a note, this was the bands first ever video, they were huge without any videos or anything on Mtv, and this was the first video they ever made. Hard to believe this was right at 35 years ago.

The music is so difficult to play that you would think their concerts would be sloppy. But they are true professionals and they are pretty much flawless live. In fact, they sound better live than their recorded studio albums.

At this time, the band was also dealing with a lot of personal pain. They still hadn't really gotten over the death of Cliff and this whole album reflects their anger of that.

Metal music, like James likes to say, is outsider music. And he still cannot believe that they have been able to reach every corner of the world with their outsider music. They have played in all of the continents and in probably huge swath of countries in the process. And you can see and feel when someone is doing their thing for the love of the game and just because they are good at it. 42 years and counting...

While I am really a classic Metallica fan (this album took a minute to grow on me when it came out), I did like this song right away. The build in tempo and aggression. The lyrics and story it painted for me as a listener. Then the video came out. Something Metallica had been avoiding (videos) and it was fantastic. It took the song and everything I appreciated about it and took it to another level. I believe this stands the test of time and from your reaction, I would say that belief is accurate. If I might make two suggestions, because of what you enjoyed about this music / video story combination and how it worked together, AND because of the importance of the messages they convey - please do a reaction to two songs by Five Finger Death Punch (Gone Away, which is a cover of a song by Offspring and Wrong Side of Heaven). Both are powerful and emotional. Be sure to watch to the very end of each video.

That's James Hetfield's normal metal voice, they have so many great songs, but album "And Justice For All" is "one" (pun intended 😂) of the better ones, though they held the base guitar back on this album. Check out this women's metal voice, look up "Jinjer" they're from Russia, got to see her in concert in Mi. You are seeing real emotion in the artist, this was (in it's entirety) a brilliant song, & "one" (there's that pun again) of my favorite songs of all time.
