Let's face it! U2 is simply one of the best groups in musical history. And this is just a fantastic song!
@TheJimprez
@TheJimprez 2 жыл бұрын
The early U2 is the best. After Unforgettable Fire, they took a pop/radio turn. I was 15 in 1984. I grew up on all of that music and U2 has THREE distinct periods. The early raw gems, the 90s USA-inspired music (Joshua tree, etc) , and the post-2000 stuff. The early music is the only U2 I really care about. It's jus a personal opinion though.
@Reani71
@Reani71 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheJimprez I totally agree. The Joshua Tree is to U2 what the Black Album is to Metallica, it was a masterpiece at it's time but also marked a complete change in style and direction for the whole band. From that moment on they became a stadium band. Sure, they still made great music, but it had nothing to do with their early stuff anymore which I also keep close to my heart since that's the stuff I grew up with as well. So if you ask me (a 50 year-old guy) their best (and purest) period was from 1980 - 1984 with their albums Boy, October, War and The Unforgettable Fire. And don't forget the brilliant live album Under A Blood Red Sky. I played that record to death when I was young.

Just listen to the whole of their 1991 album Achtung Baby and you'll have heard musical perfection! U2 are one of my all-time favourite bands and, to me, Achtung Baby is their greatest album, followed by The Joshua Tree, Zooropa and Boy. :)

As much as I liked Achtung Baby when it came, they seemed larger than life, it's the old U2 I keep returning to, they had a sound that was entirely their own, and their songs had that strange beauty.

You sir have the post of the day. You have my exact top 4. Although POP and zooropa are tied for me. POP is a beautiful dark masterpiece and a perfect end to the 90’s trilogy.
@pant-hootingchimp8917

@@nianfiedler9691 I'm female, lol, but thanks. Those 4 albums are just amazing and yes, I love POP too. Just a few songs on it I'm not so keen on and I wish that they'd explored more with the techno sounds of Discotheque and Mofo but otherwise it's great too. The 90's was probably their greatest decade for experimentation and creativity. In the 80's they were just a great rock band but the 90's took them to a whole new level. I don't think anything they've done in the 21st Century can match the U2 of the 80's and 90's but they still release some brilliants songs from time to time. :)

Think about the song as a love letter from Lech Walesa to his wife, written while he was in prison. Mr. Walesa led the Solidarity labor movement in Poland in the late 70s through the 80s, and spent a lot of time in jail for fighting the authorities. Poland was a Soviet block country at the time, so Democracy and labor rights etc was frowned upon.

'War' was probably the most important, earth shattering album by U2, this is what put them on the map as the greatest band of that decade. Every single song on this album is outstanding. Listen to 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' at the very least.

U2 started the music based on Irish melodies and very low base and very high guitare playing. It is significant and many musician started to copy this pattern. For example Muse is a nowadays mix of Queen and U2 influence.

Probably the best, most mature song Paul Hewson will ever write. I, for decades, was immature enough to believe that this composition was written to cash-in on a New Year broadcasting opportunity only previously taken by ABBA's song 'Happy New Year'. Then I grew up and suddenly realised the power of the song's meaning and now acknowledge that it's one of the greatest songs ever recorded. Dave Evans' contribution to 'New Year's Day' is superb too, not just with those guitars, but that awesome piano performance.

U2 are one of the biggest bands over the last 40 years, from the 80's with also Sunday Bloody Sunday, Pride (In the Name of Love), The Unforgettable Fire, Bad, MLK, Streets, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, With or Without You, Bullet the Blue Sky, Mothers of the Disappeared, All I Want Is You, Angel of Harlem and Silver and Gold (both versions), then the 90's where they experimented and went a bit crazy but still produced some good songs like the whole of Achtung Baby which includes One but also Even Better than The Real Thing, The Fly, Mysterious Ways, Acrobat, Love is Blindness (which both of those you need to react to live also, Love is Blindness live in Sydney ZooTV and Acrobat live in Berlin) etc., Lemon, Numb, Discotheque, Dirty Day, Mofo, Gone, Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me and The Hands That Built America, then 2000's with Beautiful Day, Kite (also do live), Vertigo, City of Blinding Lights, Yahweh and White as Snow and then the 10's with Song for Someone, Get out of Your Own Way, American Soul, Summer of Love, Love is Bigger Than Anything in its Way and Ahimsa and then the recent release Your Song saved my Life and the other U2 songs that are in Sing 2

The best U2 bass song is 'With or Without You' plus it's one of their best songs ever. Other essential U2 songs to check out after you have done 'One' are 'Pride (In The Name Of Love)', 'Where The Streets Have No Name', 'Sunday Bloody Sunday', 'Beautiful Day', 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For', 'Bad', 'Mysterious Ways', 'I Will Follow', 'All I Want Is You', 'The Unforgettable Fire' and 'Vertigo'. I would describe War as U2's explosion of creativity, originality, and passion, never quite matched again. The only other album anything like it was Echo and the Bunnymen's Porcupine, which came out at almost the same time. What a time of joyful music listening that was.

U2's war was like a breathe of fresh air when it came out. Rock was still being dominated by the same bands that ruled the 70's, and quite frankly was becoming a bit stale and tired, and War really changed things very quickly. It didn't have quite the same effect on the 80's rock scene that Nirvana's "Nevermind" had for the 90's (literally ending careers overnight), but it did reset the chess board so to speak.

U2 never made a better song than New Year's Day. They might have equaled it, but this song is basically perfect. They were almost always coming out with some brilliant music from 1983 to 1997. They mostly lost me after the 90s, but there are a few newer songs that still have the magic like Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own and Sleep Like A Baby Tonight, but War, The Unforgettable Fire, Rattle and Hum, Pop, and even the Passengers album (not just The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby), are far better albums that All That You Can't Leave Behind or anything that came after. And, yeah, I just think Boy and October are stepping stones to get to their first masterpiece album, which was War.

"Oh my gosh, it's so good !" Pretty much. By the way, might be wrong but it seems to be a shorter version. A different one from the original. "A New Year's Day" was my very first musical memory and the record jacket freaked the hell out of me (disturbing, right ? Well, when you're very young). Oh and i suggest you to listen to Side B "Treasure". Soooo (early) 80's 😁

Yeah, this is the shorter version. U2 did the music video to a shortened version (because back in the day MTV wanted shorter music videos) but the full version on the album War is EVEN BETTER.
