Most early U2 albums contained songs with themes of war, oppression, and freedom. Often times those lyrics were juxtaposed with lyrics of love and desire. I always described early U2 music as having haunting Melodies particularly characterized by The Edges guitar riffs and piano playing. And punctuated by Larry Mullen, Jr’s drumming and Adam Clayton’s heavy bass. All the elements came together.

Hi together, my name is Thorsten and I´m from Germany. I listened to U2´s music from their eraly days. This song I understood in this way, that in first world war there was a story, that british sondiers and german soldiers had fire breaks at the front on New years day and also that christmas before. In these breakes some soldiers start to sing and the other side of the troops started to sing with the "enemy" these moments it happened, that they played soccer after singing, they gave each other presents. A lot of soldiers may have thoughts to their loved family and girlfriends or wifes. So I think these pictures have been chosen for this song, This song to me sounds kind of melodramatic and is full of desire.

The lyrics, in fact, refer to the persecuted leader of the Polish Solidarity movement, Lech Walesa. Coincidentally, after the song was released Poland's Communist government announced that they would abolish martial law. In 1980 the Solidarity movement in Poland, under the leadership of future Nobel Peace Prize winner and president Lech Walesa, challenged the oppressive rule of the Polish government. In December 1981, the Solidarity movement was outlawed and Walesa, together with the other leaders of the movement, was arrested and put in jail. It is believed that "New Year’s Day" initially started out as a love song, dedicated to Bono’s high-school sweetheart, Ali, whom he had recently married, but this changed. Bono told the Rolling Stone in 2012 that he made the lyrics up on the spot, as he often does. He said, "We improvise, and the things that came out; I let them come out." "I must have been thinking about Lech Walesa being interned. Then, when we'd recorded the song, they announced that martial law would be lifted in Poland on New Year's Day. Incredible."

Probably my favorite song of all time. The musicality of it, the lyrics, the message. "So we're told this is the Golden Age, and gold is the reason for the wars we wage..." Oh! this is the radio edit! There is another verse. For me, the theme was that we look to New Years Day for change, but it often is simply a continuation of the status quo. The 80's were a huge time of political awakening.

This is very early U2. Post-punk/new wave, which always has good bass guitars and dancy beats. They are one of the best alternative rock bands ever from 'late '70s to '00s. Very long career. Also influenced many alternative rock bands in the future like Coldplay, Interpol, Bloc Party, Arcade Fire, The Killers and others. Need to do more U2! Also this video seems edited, missing an extra part of the song. But its ok still a great song and video! I think its about the Cold War which was common to sing about back then and U2 is very political in a lot of their music. Happy sounding music but dark topics. Also see bands like Killing Joke, Joy Division, The Killers, Interpol, Sioxsee and The Banshees , The Cure, Bloc Party, Psychedelic Furs, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, and others. Like older U2.

IMO this is their best album ever. They had been together long enough to gel and figure out some of their iconic sound, but still had that rough edge.

Song still gives me goosebumps almost 40 yrs later. Brutal is a good word. Beautiful at the same time. This was only radio version. The full song much better.

Brutalist architecture? Wow, Lex surprised me! The quick of that is bunker, specifically, concrete bunker. If you've ever seen a large multistory building that looks like it's supposed to be a bunker, chances are great you've seen Brutalist Architecture. "New Year's Day" was U2's breakthrough hit back in 1983. Check out some clips from their Red Rocks concert on their War tour. Fire!!!

You might react to "Stay, faraway so close". According to Bono it is one of the most underrated songs in the u2 repertoire

The war footage is from the eastern front, probably Stalingrad, where the Soviet army eventually encircled the Germans.

I went to see the J Geils Band in Atlanta in 1980 (might have been 1981) and the warm up act was this group that almost nobody in the audience us heard of. They were called U2. There were some punk rockers there jamming out to them. The rest of us (like 95%) just sat there wondering who the Hell they were, but we were definitely not there to hear them, so we started booing. LOL.

Video was from time before they made good videos. I remember seeing it on old show called Night Tracks. Not all of us had cable or streaming yet. This is from around 1982. Great song though.

Concur with recommendation for I Will Follow. The genius of that song is the simplicity of the individual instruments - and yet it fully captures U2's sound. Lex - if you're still noodling around with that guitar I Will Follow is a good song for new players.

Great bass underpinning the song but Edge on guitar fantastic as ever. I also love the intro on the 12 inch version, the haunting piano.

Its a groovy harmony section with bass and drums playing off each other, with Edge sprinkles of non-complex genius.
