Nina Simone is LEGEND! ❤

I was watching a movie in a theater in 1993. The soundtrack was mostly the same woman-I totally forgot about the movie. I just wanted to know who was singing. It was Nina Simone. I still love her music. She studied classical piano but the only job she could get was playing in a bar. The owner told her she had to sing too. The rest is history. I’m still a BIG fan. Loved your reaction!

She also played incredible jazz piano. So many classics. She did an unbelievable cover of George Harrison's song "Isn't It A Pity" worth hearing.

Liked before the music started just because Nina Simone was an amazing talent. Love her and this song. Glad you listened to her/it!

This chick sadly died in 2003 at the age of 70, she has great songs, try some more : "Ain't Got No, I Got Life" or "My Baby Just Cares for Me"

The song was from a 1964 musical The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd, where it's sung by a character named "The Negro" as he defeats two grifters who have been praying on him.

She isa legend ❤. Personally I think this modern video is distracting, and more lighthearted than Nina. The song is from 1965. Nina was a great pianist (jazz, blues, classic and more) and a civil rights activist. She died 20 years ago.

Nina had a really hard life and was a big campaigner for social justice despite, or maybe because of, her own mental health issues (some of which I share). My favourite song of hers, and there are plenty to choose from, is probably "Stars/Feelings", in which Nina, always a rebellious concert performer, takes a Janis Ian song, gives it her own twist, apparently improvising on the spot to a live audience, and segues into the song considered the most meaningless song ever written. This piece probably illustrates depression better than any other song I've ever heard, not necessarily in the lyrics, but in the performance. You absolutely must check it out.
