The 60’s and 70’s has many songs about caring for each other, no matter who they were. Lord have mercy, we need music to inspire this caring now. With social media and other factors, people are so self centered and hateful it’s sickening😔

I can appreciate that point of view in that moment......but its about sooo much more than that...its about your clan, friends, lovers ,community ....the person you pass everyday and pretend they aren't there....... to put this in a box ...Vietnam....today .....is to not seeting the big picture. But ya, Vietnam....

The Hollies had a lot of great songs, and in several different styles. You should listen to "All I Need in the Air that I Breathe", which stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it. One of those "I know where I was and what I was doing" moments.

In 1918 at Father Flanagan‘s home for boys orphanage in Nebraska young resident Howard Loomis who had polio and wore braces had trouble walking, especially up and down the stairs. The older boys started carrying him on the stairs. One day father Flanagan asked Ruben Granger if Howard was heavy, his reply, ‘ he ain’t heavy father, he’s my brother’!

I've had the honour of seeing Allan Clarke sing this many times live in Hollies concerts, and he gives a stunning performance on stage. The whole theatre would give him a standing ovation. Truly one of the greatest live singers of all time in my opinion. Although he retired from the Hollies in 1999, he has recently recorded a solo album called "Resurgance" and the Hollies as a band still perform to this day, having never broken up. I have my tickets already for a concert in the UK in 2021. Although the lineup has changed over the years, both Tony Hicks on lead guitar and Bobby Elliott on drums, are still in the band and they still pack the theatres out worldwide. Brilliant group!

Love this song but it always brings up a lot in me. I volunteered in casualty recovery for people lost at sea, either accidentally or by their own will & I always think of the young men who went too soon. There's a lot of fraternity among men even if it's not explicitly expressed or seems like it's not there.

You are correct, "brother" refers to your fellow human being. I always get tears in my eyes when I hear this song. An interesting trivia point: In this live performance, Singer Allan Clarke makes a mistake on the bridge. The lyrics are supposed to be, "If I'm laden at all, I'm laden with sadness that everyone's heart isn't filled with the gladness of love for one another." He replaces "gladness" with "sadness" a second time. Anyway, beautiful song with a beautiful sentiment. Makes me pine for the 1960s. A contemporary song with a similar vibe is Bill Withers' "Lean on Me." Be forewarned, however that Bill Withers songs get blocked a lot.

We need music like this even more, now, a year later. Americans are divided with no way to turn. This music points to a better future for all of our kids. We need to get back to what the hippies prescribed. As a teen when this came out, I took it as an inclusive brother. Everybody is my brother. This concept has been brutalized since the 70’s. We need it back.
