Back in O.C. Calif when I was 30 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"... I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Raphael Ravenscroft” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen. I asked David…. How do you create those awesome solos?… he said….. I sit on a stool and listen to what Roger, Nick and Rick put down and play along. I listen to what I played and pick out what I like, then I put the pieces together into one piece then learn to play it as one. Our fans are fanatics for our shows to sound like the albums so I must play it correctly each time in a show. I have the concert Brochure and album on the wall with David’s picture centerfold.

Clare Torry is the singer on the Great gig in the sky and the story goes that the band invited her to sing on the track and they explained to her that they wanted her to use her voice as an instrument to basically explain the different stages of dying denial ,acceptance and eventually the embracing of death and what this resulted in was this masterpiece. when Floyd do this live it is a separate singer for each part. she's some woman for one woman as my da would say. ps she recently got her name on the credits and her share of the royalties . Well deserved 👏

I like the fact that you added Claire Torre interview at the end. Most people have no idea about who she was or how she got onto the album. I remember when the song came out, almost everyone swore up and down that she was a black woman. The reason everyone thought that was because no one back then thought that a white woman could have that much soul in her voice. In my opinion, there is no better band and never will be again, that can make so many ( COUNTLESS ) masterpieces together. I noticed that you said they make use of the empty space by doing nothing with it ( not your words, but basically the same meaning ) just letting the music breathe. I think you would LOVE " SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND ". It has 9 parts to it, and is 25 minutes long, BUT WELL WORTH THE TIME. Pink Floyd is NOT a band to listen to. They are a band that you have to experience. Their music takes you on a journey, while the lyrics are usually very deep in meaning . Enjoy your trip down the Pink Floyd Rabbit Hole.

The background vocals are processed through a “frequency translator”, which is apparently a shifter. Sounds like a combination of a tremolo and a phaser.

This album has been "Stuck In People's Head" for 50 years. It has continued to sporadically appear on the Billboard 200 since then, with the total at 962 weeks on the chart as of February 2022.

Think you would really really really enjoy Pink Floyd "Echoes" (Part 1) live at Pompeii 1972 No Audience, No Lights, No Pyrotechnics and a Dave Gilmour with No Shirt. You get to see the guys playing in an empty ancient Roman Amphitheatre! A little song about all life on the entire planet and how we should be better human beings 😉

Great reaction to DSOTM. Such a ground breaking record, and actually the first album that I ever owned. It is a testament to the band and the production/engineering that you can still put this on now and feel the same wow factor as in '74. I believe that this is still the number 4 best selling album of all time. Famously, many years later, Clare Torry brought suit for a writing credit and royalties for Great Gig In The Sky, since she had actually created her vocal riffs, even though a session singer and the settlement was reported to be significantly better than the 30 GBP she was paid for the session. All later copies carried a new writing credit.

This album is the engineering masterpiece of this bands catalog in my opinion. Emotionally and songwriting wise I think The Wall is the most touching album they have and I recommend it a ton.

The reason for Pink Floyd's success is simple: "Run, rabbit run - Dig that hole, forget the sun, - And when at last the work is done - Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one" The first hole is the recording session, the second hole is the studio work. (They are certainly not afraid to care, which is why they don't sit down until the work is perfectly done).

She said she walked past a record shop months later and the album caught her eye in the window so she went in and bought a copy. Years later she successfully sued them for more money because it was so successful and she was only paid a session singers rate. ( which probably wasn't much at the time)

Pink Floyds 1973 "Dark Side of the Moon" album has sold over 50 million copies worldwide and counting. The album holds the record of most weeks on Billboards Top 100 Albums of all Time at 962 weeks. that's over 18 years on the list! The band in 2nd place just recently hit 500 weeks, that makes Floyds number even more impressive Pink Floyd is Legendary Progressive Band, they are a complete Experience! Their music takes the listener on a cerebral journey to the stratosphere, where an 8- or 9-minute song, seems like a 3- or 4-minute song. Some say their music put you in a kind of trance, a floating feeling, lol! David Gilmours' guitar, and Rick Wrights keyboards have much to do with the sound that captures the listener. Here's what I've read about Clare Torry, the name of the vocalist on "The Great Gig in the Sky". She was actually told by Roger Waters and David Gilmour, (bassist, and guitarist of PF), they wanted no words in the vocals. Also, they asked her to take a few minutes alone before starting, and to think about death and horror. She did 3 takes, and the band used parts of all 3 takes for the final cut.

Fun fact for you buddy. Dark Side of the Moon was originally recorded in 5:1 That would be 1972. Alan Parsons' the producer was also a genius... but they had to recorded in stereo for it to be played on radio. You are in for a ride if you start with Echoes Pompeii Live 1971. And work your way up.

My favourite album of all time. First heard DSOTM aged 10 around 6 years after it was first released and it make a huge impression on me. I really like Wish You Were Here & the Wall as well but DSOTM will always be my No 1.

Pink Floyd released a dvd set about 20 years ago on the Making of Dark Side Of The Moon. How complex it was just shy of 50 years ago! Much respect for Alan Parkins!! This album was the soundtrack of my 50 out of 64 years of my life.❤️

Check out Wish You We’re Here next, I think it’s their best record. The production on it is insane, it was originally mixed in quadrophonic instead of stereo or mono so it sounds super crisp and lush

clair torry came through alan parsons, who was engineer on the album, he had worked with her before and knew of her, i believe she came in on a weekend, and or at the last minute, or on a moments notice, kind of a hurry hurry rush rush type of thing,and that she was paid "scale" which wasnt thall that much but she later renegotiate with the band/record label for a royalty situation,,i just know,,,it was all magic, the planets were aligned, God himself was smiling down at the bands progress,

Great reaction and analysis. I love how you include the interview with Clare Torry at the end. An insanely talented and modest vocalist at the top of her game. What a girl! "Great Gig In The Sky".....Is this song about death or dying?…. No. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.
