RATM were one of the first heavy rock bands to effectively blend a genuine hip hop vibe into their music. They have some great songs of their own but also recorded cover versions of hip hop classics (Cypress Hill - How I could just kill a man, Eric B & Rakim - Microphone fiend, Afrika Bambaata - Renegades of funk) in their own style. If you want to react to some more RATM, I recommend "Take the power back" and "Down rodeo".
@Comrade_mommy2 жыл бұрын
I personally think they’re one of the only ones to master it. Maybe bc they have actual brown ppl in their band. But RATM was amazing bc they got a bunch of white suburban kids to bop to songs with revolutionary, anti imperialist messages. I was raised by an activist parent in the LGBTQ+ community, but there was so much I didn’t know bc my moms didn’t know it; we’d all been failed by our educational system that taught history from a male, Anglo, land owners perspective. Being a poor 80’s-90’s kid I didn’t have much access to computers or internet till the 00’s and Rage taught me info I had no other access to. My mom had been an anti racist, anti war, gay activist with a genius IQ and who could read 300 pages in 2hrs, but didn’t know about the race massacres, or even that much about stonewall. We were missing the history of blk ppl, immigrants, women, the working class & poor, indigenous ppls, LGBTQ+ ppl, radical socialists & communists who had a major impact on our country,etc. I was raised in the gay community and their was a real dearth of knowledge on gay history. Before the internet was what it is today, (or affordable) a lot of the more “subversive” but true American history was hard to find. Rage really was a gateway to even more radical, revolutionary thought.

Keep googling, especially with RATM. Back when this came out, I didn't have Google, so I went to the library to figure out some of these references... my mind was blown by what I learned. When RATM released their first album, there wasn't anyone else that sounded like them. Rap/rock fusion was very very rare, and nothing hit as hard as them. Add in the fact that these guys are highly educated in politics and economics, and had a guitarist who spent endless hours exploring all the possible sounds he could make with his guitar...and we received one of the most unique bands created. Although they've influenced many other musicians, there's still nothing else quite like them.

It’s actually not nameless. When bands release an album like that it’s considered self-titled. The name of the band is the name of the album. But you’re right, it is an incredible album. Every single song is great. Plus, Tom Morello won “Most Innovative Guitarist of the Year” for his killswitch technique. Plus they are very close with the band Tool. Some of them were roommates. That’s why Maynard James Keenan does a feature on “Know Your Enemy” and has performed it live with Rage a few times.
