For clarity yes he actually is making that sound with his guitar, his name is Tom Morello and he's known for his very unique style where he's basically scratching his guitar strings for his solos

While I never want to take away from RATM, I think the fact that they're still so relevant may be less about them being "ahead of their time", and more about the rest of us making fuck-all progress in the 30 years since they came on the scene, and even radically regressing in a large number of societal aspects. Shit is real bad, and getting worse.

My favorite "first" reactions to RATM are to Down Rodeo. You can see them boppin' and then on abut the 3rd or maybe 4th repeat, they'll finally hear the first line, stop the music, and say something to the effect of "They did not just say that." Yep. Yep. They did.

Rage Against the Machine came on the scene in Los Angeles in the wake of the Rodney King beatings, the subsequent acquittal, and the riots that resulted in the out-pouring of anger at the injustice. I was an 18 year old kid in Los Angeles when "Killing in the Name Of" and shortly thereafter "Know Your Enemy" were getting airplay. Keep in mind - this is all pre-internet so good ol' radio still ruled the airwaves (no pun intended). Killing in the Name Of was a direct reaction to the beatings. Their music was a perfect blend of the harder style of everything in LA - both metal and a rap scene deeply influenced by NWA and other related artists. (Most folks know how popular rap was in LA, but folks not from there might not know was also had a 24-hour a day metal station in LA back in those days called KCNA) . Rage Against the Machine is very much the voice of the Barrio and Hood in Los Angeles and reflects the anger at exploitation or the poor and the lies and the divisive racism that was prevalent then and still with us today. Their music is as relevant in addressing those failures in delivery of the "American Dream" now as is it was in 1992. PS: Its noteworthy that Tom Morello the guitarist also was an honors student in political science at Harvard, and while it might not be obvious, he is a light skinned Black man who grew up in a White neighborhood as the only Black family on the block. This is how you get mix of music you typically associate with White folks mixed with the music you probably typically associate with Black folks - coming out of one band. Zach De La Rocha is actually Hispanic by the way - granted a very Americanized Chicano version of his cultural heritage typical of the 3rd or 4th generation in Los Angeles. I bring these up because these mixed ethnicities and mixed cultures and blending of different ideas together because this is fundamental to understanding what Los Angeles and much of California is about now. Indeed, it is what most of the country is changing to become and the strife we all feel playing out now played out in California in generations past. The rest of the country is just not as far along at learning to celebrate diversity, take the best parts of their different cultural heritages, put them in a blender , and make something even better than what there was before when the cultures were segregated. In some cases this is best reflected in the mixed children that will continue top happen everywhere because, let's face it, people are gonna fuck, and racism won't stop that one bit because fine is fine. LA is making a new culture born from the original separate cultures one friendship, partnership, and hook up at a time. Now, to relate this back to the band as I promised and why you can't separate them from their origins in Los Angeles. That cultural melting pot and blending of cultures is what Los Angeles is about. It is what makes it special. Rage of the Machine is a perfect example of what comes out of that blending of cultures and, if you are from LA, it represents the suffering together in unity of the poor and exploited under the yoke of elites and systems, that will use you regardless if you are White, Brown, Black, Red, or purple. (PS: If you saw me you would say "sup White boy" in LA, but I am a mixed White and Puertorriquena mom, and White dad, but I grew up in the Mexican hood hanging out with mostly Chicanos).

Thanks for forwarding me back to this comment. Beautifully stated. I grew up in a place called Pueblo, CO. A mostly Chicano population and a small town. Most Rage songs condemn oppression and injustice. You should watch Rage's live 1993 performance of "Killing in the Name". That song condemns white supremacy and police brutality. Rage absolutely KILLS it in their live 1993 performance of that song. Other Rage songs that have a good message: - "Know Your Enemy" WITH lyrics (need the lyrics for that one) - "The Ghost of Tom Joad" WITH lyrics (need the lyrics for that one) - "Renegades of Funk"

Fun story told by Tom Morello - When he was still in school, he had already picked up the guitar and was up to experimenting with the different sounds he could pull out of it. His neighbors called the police and complained that he was "playing his keyboard too loudly". The responding officers were in complete disbelief that he was doing all of it with nothing more than a guitar, an effects pedal, and his own creativity.

Tom Morello is on the Guitar, and yes he’s making those scratch noises using the feedback from the amplifier, when you point an electric guitar at the amp it’s plugged into you get a high pitched feedback frequency that can be manipulated and distorted by moving the guitar closer or further back. Fun Fact: Tom Morello has a cameo in the first IronMan, he’s a member of the 10Rings and the first person to ever see Tony Stark in his first IronMan suit.
@Owlyross

Just a respectful correction, cos I used to use the same technique as Tom. He is simply rubbing his fingers along the strings, has one pick up set up to 0 volume and the other on full and is flicking between them. He does also use feedback and whammy pedal for his other tricks, but this one is the pickup selector one

Tom Morello is "scratching" on guitar. Guitar strings are wound, so you can get a scratching sound by (usually) scraping a guitar pick or (in this case) rubbing your fingers down their length. Morello was always found creative and innovative ways to get new sounds out of a guitar. And, yes, he and the singer are both big proponents of rights and fairness for the little guys. Morello has a political science degree from Harvard, and engages in a lot of political activism.

Got this album when it first came out, and I had been playing bass about a year. Changed my entire life, man. Still playing Tim Commerford's basslines to work out.

RATM, The Clash, and Public Enemy are three amazing political bands! Btw, all sounds are from guitar, bass, and drums.

Gotta add Anti-Flag to that mix, too! They've toured with Rage, and Tom Morello has helped produce and guest appeared on some of their stuff.

I LOVE watching Zack rock tf out. When he starts head banging, I get so damn LIT!! This song is basically about government waging wars while claiming to be about “family values”. The second verse lays it out beautifully.

Tom Morello, has a degree in Political Science and also a degree in Guitar Badassery. He decided to invent some interesting ways to make the guitar sound like not a guitar. You should look up his response to people on twitter when they get pissed off about Rage's political activism.

These videos never fail to bring a smile to my face. Step one: "Ah shit, these guys are hard as fuck." Step two: "Wait, what are they saying? Are they calling out cops and white supremacy?" Step three: "What the hell is that sound? Is that GUITAR?!" Step 4: "Well, RATM is my new favorite band."
