One of the funniest stories was from a very good friend's mother and grandmother. Ratt was playing a concert in Jackson, MS sometime in 1987. My friend's grandmother and mother were staying at the same hotel as the band because the grandmother had an early morning procedure at a local hospital. Anyway, the band got onto the elevator with the mother and grandmother. They were so nice, making small talk and making sure the ladies were ok. When the ladies got home, they were telling my friend and me about their time with Ratt. Grandma ended it with "such nice boys"! So every time I hear anything about Ratt, I always think "such nice boys".

Ratt was one of the bigger bands back at that point. “Wanted Man”, “You’re in Love”, “Lay it Down”... these were huge hits!! Jake E. Lee from Ozzy Osbourne’s band originally played with them when they were known as Mickey Ratt. Carlos Cavazo from Quiet Riot played with them recently. Warren DeMartini (the main guitarist) was like Siamese Twins with George Lynch from Dokken. Check out his multiple-layered vibrato at the end. Fantastic!! RIP to Robbin Crosby who, at one time, dated Tawny Kitaen, David Coverdale’s (from Whitesnake) wife. In fact, she’s on two of Ratt’s album covers and in a video... Shout to Stephen Pearcey, the singer, who’s battling cancer now. RIP to Milton Berle, who played old man AND played his own wife!! Great band during a great era!! Thanks, Rob Squad!!

Loved this song! RATT was underrated and not appreciated enough, if you ask me. The old man at the dinner table was Milton Berle -- an iconic comedian and actor whose career spanned 80 years. Yes! More hair metal! This band is just one of many to emerge from the LA metal scene in the 80's. Although Round and Round was their biggest hit, you gotta hear Back for More, Lay it Down, Way Cool Jr., Dance Dance Dance, and Wanted Man. The band is: Stephen Pearcy - vocals, Warren DiMartini - guitar (the dark haired one through the floor), Robbin Crosby - guitar (RIP), Juan Croucier - Bass guitar, and Bobby Blotzer - drums. Unfortunately, the band is a shadow of it's former self, as of late. Only 2 original members are still in the band. But what a ride!

The older man and "older woman" who left the dining room early in the music video, were both portrayed by Milton Berle. He was one of the biggest stars in the early years of television, and was known as "Mr. Television", because the number of televisions in the US in 1949 doubled, from 1 million sets, to 2 million sets, because everyone wanted to watch his highly-popular comedy-variety TV series "The Texaco Star Theater" on NBC. Milton Berle's TV show aired from 1948 to 1956, and Elvis Presley appeared twice on his show during the program's final season in 1956. Berle appeared in numerous films and TV series in the ensuing years. Milton Berle's nephew was the manager for Ratt, and arranged for him to appear in this music video, and in the music video for Ratt's song, "Back For More". Milton Berle passed away in 2002, at the age of 93.

In 1980 I was 20 and a lead guitar player. I’ll tell you! VaN Halen came in 1978, crushing the disco era and paving the way for the 80s! Eddie Van Halen woke every guitar player up to strive to be the best! Warren D Martini was such an underrated lead guitar player!! Ratt was smart in that they took heavy metal to the women!! Created sexy beats with wicked guitar vibrato and great composers!! These hair bands brought class to rock and roll. Made rock for the first time , Royalty!!! Rock n roll was at its highest in the 80s!! Upbeat heavy metal too!! God I miss those days! Im 62 and my wife and I were , and are such fans of Ratt!! They were not appreciated enough I thought! Iron Maiden, ACDC, Priest... not "hair bands". Long hair didnt equal "hair band"... otherwise Metallica and Megadeth would be hair bands. Twisted Sister, despite having a lead singer with makeup and big poodle hair, was not a hair band either.. they were closer in spirit to Motorhead.. a grimy, agressive, fast rock band full of ugly dudes. "Hair bands" were specifically "Glam bands", mostly from the sunset strip in LA... so yeah Ratt, Crue, Poison and Quiet Riot were in that group.

I saw Ratt once and found the singer to be the greatest person ever! I've gone to a lot of shows at this point and never understood why people would throw their drinks. It's such a waste of money and dangerous for the band. Well, a guy threw a beer, Stephen pointed the guy out, continues his song. A bit later another beer is thrown. Stephen walks off stage. The band continues to play the intro to a song (sorry I don't remember what song) . Stephen comes out after they play the intro nearly 10 times, they finish the song. When the song was over, Stephen explained that it is not okay to get his equipment wet and that the guy has been escorted out of the building, "He's just lucky I don't take his girlfriend too." Or something along those lines. I laughed so hard! The band, especially Stephen, went up a few notches in my favorite bands list after that.

Thanks for the memories. Ratt was one of the first bands to really break out of the LA scene in the early 80's. Similar to Metallica, Ratt got the best of the best in regards to studios and sound engineering, their records sounded so much more polished than other LA bands at that time, including Motley Crue. Ratt is absolutely underrated and slept on.

By the way, the first guitarist playing the solo is Warren DeMartini. The second one is Robin Crosby, who dated Tawny Kitaen before she dated David Coverdale from Whitesnake. There were possibly thousands of "Hair" bands in the '80s. Every single bar, tavern and cocktail lounge had live music, most every night. There were so many acts travelling around playing covers between 1976 and 1988. What amazed me was that most of these bands (that didn't make it) had killer musicians. Everyone was smoking hot on their instruments.

Disco was ruling the air waves up until 1978 when a band called Van Halen hit the scene in 78! People all around the world, and in the music industry were blown away by Eddie Van Halen’s reinvention of rock guitar playing. Killed the long rule of the disco era!! Rock always took a back seat and was always considered the misfit of all music. This actually paved the way for the 80s! Rock and Roll couldn’t be ignored anymore.Eddie woke a ton of guitar players up and made them want to be the best they could be! Ratt’s Waren D. Martini, the main lead player, was a seriously accomplished guitar player!!! He has a unique Vibrato and feel for the guitar! Those micro movements, you don’t see in his fingers working the fret board, takes serious practice!! The whole band was great too! It was as such a thrill to have rock on top with pop, R&B, punk, new wave, heavy metal, retro, etc… The 80s exploded with so many different types of rock music which never had been done and that era allowed people from the 50s, 60s, and 70s to make a come back, all due to our first music television!! MTV!!!

Ratt were HUGE in the mid-80s. Probably second only to Motley Crue, and they were both playing the LA scene at the same time. Like anything popular, you get tons of copycats after, which is why there were so many hair bands-but most of the best (like Ratt) were part of the original glam/rock scene. We used to call in and vote for them all the time on Dial MTV. It was a weekly countdown show of the top videos based on viewer votes.

There are some other newer bands with the hair band sound you should check out Dirty Looks, Miss Crazy and Reckless Love.

For all their masculine swagger, a lot of 80s "hair metal" bands were often criticized for "dressing up like girls", so it was extremely savvy of Ratt to have Milton Berle in the video, who was a comedian and early TV pioneer who used to dress in drag during his show (he plays the guy in the tux AND the woman who both leave after the first verse). Of course, Ratt having Berle's nephew as a manager at the time didn't hurt, either. :) Man, you're hitting all of 1984's high points recently- Thompson Twins, Go-Go's, RATT, "Jump"-era Van Halen- next up (maybe for Female Friday), "The Warrior" by Scandal (if you watch "Glow" on Netflix, this is the song that opens each episode).
