It’s so interesting how the lyrics Kiedis writes can sound very silly at first, but with deeper dives they become more meaningful. Specifically the “her perfume smells like gasoline, my girlfriends trash is nice and clean” line could be describing one person. Her perfuming smelling like gasoline may mean she is poor and can’t afford nice perfumes, while her “trash” being clean likely means that the things she has (decor, furniture, etc) are essentially trash being presented as things nicer than they are, because once again, she is poor. The song seems to be a story of people in love while being poor, the simple pleasures that go along with it, the drugs to forget the problems, and the hardships that come along with it all.

Anthony was a poet before RHCP. Knowing this, the abstract lyrics make more sense when read as poetry and not as lyrics.

The funky monks line is a reference to their song of that title from their 1991 album Blood Sugar Sex Magik, it is also the title of their documentary released the same year.

Anthony writes more poetic lyrics that are left up to each listener rather than super specific ones. He does that occasionally, but for the most part he likes when people can relate to them in their own way. As for the style in this song, this is kind of who the Chili Peppers have always been. Anthony didn't really start singing until about a decade into their career. I never really labeled what he did as rapping before, but I guess that is what it is. So they've been in the hip-hop realm since they started. They're hard to place in a genre, which I why I love them so much. They just love music so they do as wide a variety as they can. Funky Monks is also a reference to many things in the bands history. It's a song title, a documentary title, and just a thing they called themselves while recording the album all the above is a part of. They secluded themselves for a few months to get the album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik recorded and they've always incorporated funk into their music. Thus, Funky Monks was born.

This funk/hip hop mixed with rock/distortion is their roots. Listen to the album Blood Sex Sugar Magic. Apache Rose Peacock, Sir Psycho Sexy... Same type of vibe. Awesome that you reacted to this and you summed it up perfectly. Weird, but sounds wonderful.

They've had lot of hiphop influences since their first record from the early 80's, so it's a nice gesture to welcome them into hiphop, but comes maybe a bit too late :) Good and entertaining reaction video nevertheless.

RHCP have been experimenting with hip hop influences since the 80s! And the “funky monks” reference is to a song of the same name from their 1991 album Blood Sugar Sex Magik which broke them into the mainstream. “We’ve only just begun / Funky monks are on the run” is basically saying that even though they’ve been together nearly 40 years (!) as a band, they’re still tapping into an endless well of creativity and passion for what they do. Plus it’s a hint to John Frusciante being back in the band after 15 years of absence. I cried when I first heard that line, it means a lot.

Most of the Lyrics Anthony mentions is to refer to earlier songs by RHCP. Look back at the other albums and Funky Monks is there, Aeroplane, Rollercoaster by the Ohio Players. Too many to count off the top of my head and I've been a chili since 1988. This song reignited the fire for me.. Hahahahaha... YOU INTRODUCE THEM ?? HAHAHA... they was there way before you was? Look at Flea the Bass Players list of albums he played on for other artists? Your head will FALL OFF SON...RHCP has been around since 1979 .

I’m not sure if you’re aware, but Dr. Funkenstein, George Clinton, helped them produce their Freaky Styley album back in ‘85. Anthony started off as a rapper for the band, until he started taking his role in the band more seriously. Their story is pretty crazy and heart wrenching.

I was just giving my opinion on this song. Personally it’s not what I consider one of their better songs. I’ve listened to plenty of their music. I would have introduced them with a different song, thats just my opinion. I don’t think my comment required you to make it seem like I have no idea about who the chili peppers are. If not I didn’t know anything about them then I wouldn’t have known that they also make songs with a different type of style than this one.
