Yup. I'm a Marine, served two tours, stormed Iraq, and took over Fellujah. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy the stuff we did and saw. People forget most of us were 18-22 year olds fresh out of highschool from the middle of nowhere. I'll always be proud to be a Marine, but War is Evil.

In my thoughts on the way the song is structured: I think he says the same thing at the end because the song is repeating for another soldier, the story repeats itself over and over again. The song is brilliant in that aspect.

That's a good take. It could also be the same guy remembering how naïve he was when he first joined the service, under this guise of adventure and glory. At the beginning, you can see the appeal of it. How it's glamorized and the violent nature is understated ("just carry this gun.") Then at the end, after the full context of what he went through, he remembers the words with bitterness. Like, "yeah, I saw the world alright. And it'll haunt me forever."
@bryanf1091
@bryanf1091 3 жыл бұрын
The song is even more brilliant when you realize that the flag he's talking about through the entire song, isn't the US flag. He brought home the white flag the child was carrying. That's the flag he loves, and the only flag he trusts. "I brought home THAT flag."

@@maxlutik I get what you're saying and see how people could still think it's the US flag, but the gathering dust part is probably because he doesn't want to remind himself of that moment (and so the lyrics were pretty much the same). Air Force Vet with MP training. Became extremely disillusioned with the military after my time in. The end was the recruiter replacing the disillusioned soldier with another kid. You said the kids overseas are brainwashed and you may have to kill them in war, that's exactly what the recruiters do here. Recruiters started talking to me in 7th grade to bring me in. They had 6 years of telling me how great the military life was and that I could see the world. It's nothing like that. I never had to shoot anyone, but friends of mine were infantry in the marines.... They aren't the same as they were in high school. War is hell, the government lies to you, and they'll do anything to win.

Thank you for your services and keep tellin your story and hopefully one day people will get that war is hell, peace is the way to go and that we have to try to live together on this planet and that every human being is worth the same no matter which nationality, no matter which religion, no matter which race, no matter which sexual orientation, no matter which gender - we're all worth th same!

I have no doubt, if i wouldve asked for a prostitute be sent to my hotel room that night, SOME of those recruiters mightve arranged that. Also, im also anti-war BECAUSE of my respect for our troops. There are rules, doesnt mean people follow them. Some follow them more than others though, and a western civilization participating in a war in a foreign country with 0 risk to their wifes and children should have a higher burden on them to follow those rules than most. Even in illegal massacres of civilians there are those who refuse, but they get court marshalled, and none bats an eye.

That being said, a soldier doing something in the heat of the moment is a far cry from a higher officer sitting in some bunker on the other side of the world ordering illegal and immoral actions.

I was in Iraq in 06. There's definitely rules of war. Just like we have rules in society. However, when you're in the thick of the action, those rules have a gray area. If a terrorist killed Americans, especially Americans, you know. If you get your hands on him, things happen. Just like in society, if the cops get their hands on a cop killer or baby killer. Things sometimes happen. Is it right? Probably not, but humans have emotions and have a emotional reactions.

It is such a great song. The flag analogy goes from him singing about the american flag (which he brought with him). Later on he realises that being a "hero of war" is a false dream and not something to strive to want to be. That's why when he shoots the little girl with the white flag, it's that flag he brings home and now takes up as his own: the white flag simbolising peace, not war. The white is is now the only one he trusts.

The evolution of a servicemember from recruit to veteran. Before active duty and during bootcamp, many of us experienced Hope. We honestly thought we were joining something much bigger than us. Something honorable, something worthy of praise. During the first deployment, many feel Doubt. We begin to think that maybe what we're doing isn't right, but we have no choice but to follow through. Right before our enlistment ends, many of us are Disillusioned. Maybe we aren't the heros everyone sees. For many, for those who saw the ugly face of war up close, the final step is Despair. "The flag gathers dust," but, from seeing the world through the eyes of a servicemember, we know that our country may do bad things, but it's one of the better ones.

I think you didn’t understand the meaning. Did you hear „the flag with as snow… That’s the only flag I love and that I trust“. This song is against war and not for your military and your freedom! It’s a military man who regrets joining the army! This song is in your mother tongue. Greetings from Germany

How many native English speakers don’t understand that this song is NOT a patriotic song. It’s not for your freedom and your wars. It’s the white flag 🏳️ PEACE!!! Please think about it! Greetings from Germany

when you said you dont know if you could fight in a war. dont be so sure beacuse when you are there you do it beacuse you want to live and come home. and we humans pound our chest claiming to be so evolved, witch is bull tbh cuz it only takes a nudge for us to become that "savage". but yeah it is a really good song that explaines the life of a soldier pretty good.

When it comes down to life or death, of course our survival instincts take over. But that's why many people would never sign up for the military, knowing that they'll inevitably have to pull the trigger. In the moment you'll shoot someone to stay alive, but when you've had a moment to think about what you did, for some it'll haunt them forever, others maybe not

I went and fought for you. I don't even know you, but it doesn't matter. I don't ever expect thanks. I didnt do it for platitudes. I did it to keep you safe and free. At the same time, im an empath. I was also never given any combat training when I was sent. The things I saw and experienced... no human should have to.

Love you guys but no it doesn't take a special person to "fight" for our country. Our military hasn't been "protecting" us for years. It's always a grab for power. America fights wars for domination, not peace. Soldiers are tools, this song speaks tribute to how so many are duped by nationalism.
