What else? Both Geddy and Alex play bass/synth pedals at the same time as they are playing other instruments. Alex Lifeson the guitarist also plays acoustic guitar, mandola and later on keyboards. Neil Peart was not only the drummer and percussionist but was also the main lyrist. Alex Lifeson is also a licensed pilot and a painter. He donates his paintings to charities for fundraising. Geddy Lee has written a couple of books The Big Book of Bass and My Effen Life which will be coming out in November of this year. Neil Peart was also an avid motorcyclist and wrote a number of books about his travels. Three very talented and down to earth guys. This is one of their masterpieces and they make it look so easy! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

One comment that stuck with me was your comment about how all the band members seem to be doing something more than just their main instrument. Oh, how very true! While Neil is being his typical superhero self, using every percussive instrument imaginable, I don't think Alex receives enough credit. He plays bass pedals with his feet when Geddy is on the keyboards as well as use a host of pedal effects to make the guitar a voice of its own (e.g. La Villa Strangiato). Thank you for a fantastic reaction.

Another great Rush reaction...keep them coming!!! 😃😃 It's amazing how newcomers to Rush are blown away by their talents and abilities and overwhelmed by the fact that they once knew nothing about this band. With Xanadu now complete...I would still recommend the following list in continuing upon your Rush journey: - Working Man...Live in Cleveland from 2011 (original studio version was in 1974-75)...The pure sight and performance of three men in their upper 50's take control of the stage and perform and play like they were in their 20's!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥 - "Best Intro Ever" Live (leading into Spirit of Radio)...kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7mEoq6Ux73eYZ8.html 🔥🔥🔥 - Limelight - studio version 🔥🔥🔥 - YYZ...Live from Rio 🔥🔥🔥 - Subdivisions...studio version or live version 🔥🔥🔥 - Freewill...studio version or live version 🔥🔥🔥 - 2112 🔥🔥🔥 - Also...Neil Peart's Drum Solo Live from Frankfurt. He was The Professor...a pure musician and percussionist...not just a "drummer". Be ready to be amazed by not just his hand coordination...but most of all his foot coordination...basically his feet being completely individual in timing from his hands during segments of this performance. He was the master of this technique.🔥🔥🔥 - La Villa Strangiato - Live version 🔥🔥🔥

Wiki: "Xanadu may refer to: Shangdu, the summer capital of China's Yuan dynasty. A metaphor for opulence or an idyllic place, based upon Samuel Taylor Coleridge's description of Shangdu in his poem Kubla Khan". Coleridge wrote an unfinished poem about Xanadu (Zanadu) and Neil Peart finished that poem with his own take on things.

As you will find, they went through different phases over the decades, the Power/Prog early years with 2112 being the shining light, the golden prog years which you are looking at now, the syth era (some like/love/indifferent to) and the under appreciated later years culminating with the magnificent "The Garden" (Do the live version) If you want shredding check out Working Man - Live in Cleveland and for musical excellence a live version of La Villa Strangiato.

I'm a huge rush fan... but, They did use pre-recorded tracks, samples, and a keys player at the mixing board. I'd rather hear it this way, though, than to have a thinner version. They had to, in order to make it sound like the album. It is 3 musicians, some automation, and a keys player, offstage.

@@coachbrandon01 Not true. The three guys in Rush never had anyone play anything live but them. The 3 of them would sometimes trigger samples (with drum pads or foot pedals) but everything was played or triggered by them. No keyboard player off stage or the mixing board. They considered getting a keyboard player to play the synth parts during live shows in the early 80's, but decided against it when samplers became available.

@@coachbrandon01No, not true. It is well documented in many interviews that all throughout Rush’s career they played or triggered everything live on stage. There are many KZfaq videos with Rush tech guys saying exactly this. Tony Gerianos, Rush’s longtime keyboard tech, specifically mentioned in a 2015 interview that everything was played by the guys on stage. Not sure what you saw, but it wasn’t a remote keyboard player. But for sake of argument, let's say that Tony G, their keyboard tech, lied in all his interviews (as well as all of the techs over the years and the three Rush guys themselves all lying about it) and he did play keyboard parts live. He wouldn't play them at the soundboard, he had a little area behind Geddy's amps where he would monitor systems, setup samples and change synth patches. If he were to play something live, he would've done it there, not at the soundboard. Perhaps you saw a tech guy adjusting something and mistook it for a synth. I am a tech person for a major "Cirque" production and I can tell you that some of the equipment we use looks like we're playing an instrument!

When this was performed, it cost about half a day's wages to see this in concert; gas, ticket, etc. Albums (vinyl, cassette, 8-track) came out on Thursdays so we'd all go the the record store/head shop, smell the cool incense, and pay about 2-3 hours pay and walk out with the new album. It was big, and we read every word of the engineers & graphic artists who helped get this in our hands. Then we thought about the classic novels (of course we had to read them for English class) that inspired the musicians, and then we de-seeded.....

The band that did everything backwards and it came out amazing. The drummer could (and did) play an entire song by himself with all his percussion instruments and could play different percussion instruments in different time signatures at the same time using both hands and feet all at once AND he wrote the lyrics but never sang. The lead singer played bass guitar and synths with both his hands and feet. The lead guitar player sang backup vocals and also sometime used foot pedal synths. They sound like a much larger band because all of them were almost always doing multiple things at the same time and even with all of that for a few songs they had guest musicians when they needed somebody to play something like an electric violin.

This song done live is often considered the apex of their masterful skills on display. Three musicians doing all that on stage, live, and not missing a beat...just wow.
