This song needs the snare drum of the studio version. There's a story behind that snare, but it's the sonics that really matter. This version suffers without that bottomless snare. The harmonies also aren't nearly as tight as they used to be. You need to hear them in their prime. Some of the greatest harmonies ever.

Go afterward and listen to the studio version of this. A lot of the instrumentals are different and they were so young and clear then. The beauty of Simon and Garfunkel is top tier. Do your live listens, but go back and check the version that made them famous. A live version of Scarborough Faire exists with guest Andy Williams, and it is one of the most beautiful things you will ever hear. Three men, a guitar and a mic.

According to Paul Simon, "Lie-la-lie" was initially intended as a place-holder, simply because he didn't yet have lyrics for that part of the song. But as they worked on it in the studio, it eventually just became part of the song. It really didn't have meaning, any more than something like tra-la-la, or fa-la-la, or even na-na-na-na-na-na-na from Hey Jude might have.

The studio version is grand.. cuz back then they didn't have sound effects so they did what they could like record that snar drum down in a elevator shaft to get the harmony. And sound effects they needed..! Great song

It's a song about disillusionment.....about being misled by the "lies" they have heard....hence, that refrain... The reference to "the boxer" is not literal, but to be taken metaphorically....i.e., though he has been beaten down by life, he's still going to keep trying..

Weird version. Please do the original. It's so much more musically impactful and interesting. Other people have mentioned this on this thread and it's because it's really so different and a far superior track; though this performance has its merits too. I've always thought the 'lie lie' part had to do with the theme of the song. Anyway, another nice reaction, I enjoyed it.

This is a really cool performance. You might be a little confused when you hear the studio version, cause here, they are, I’m not exactly sure what it’s called, but they’re singing against the tempo. Which, to possibly complicate things even further, seems a little faster than it should be

There's two more Paul Simon songs I recommend: Diamond on the Soles of Her Shoe and You Can Call Me Al. The last one is funnier because the music video has Chevy Chase miming the song while Simon plays all the instruments in the song after he drags it out..

This version obviously accentuates how well they work off of each other in front of a live crowd. Their ability to anticipate and work with each other's harmonies in this version is stunning and a tribute to their friendship. The really stunning one is the original studio recording. It was a true masterpiece of the era. And as someone else stated the "ly-ly-lys" were not really words or lyrics, but a musical, harmonious quality that fit into that part well. It could have been "by-by-by's" or "my-my-mys" had either been as musically harmonious.

Ah, the legends of Simon and Garfunkel. Love their music from when they were in their prime. I'm old and I recall in 8th grade I had an English teacher who was teaching us poetry, and she put on an album and had us listen to Simon and Garfunkel. Fine poetry turned into music there. This song is one of my favorites, along with Scarborough Fair and a few (well, many) others. Thanks so much for reacting to these guys. They sounded great even as they were older here than in their prime.

As wonderful as their harmonies always were, you're missing the true beauty of Art Garfunkel's voice IF you don't hear them in their early days. Oh my goodness: his voice was absolutely angelic back then and melded so wonderfully with Paul's. They didn't need much else than Paul's guitar to be one of THE best duos ever - still going strong (at least Paul Simon is) 'after all these years'.

While this is very good of course (and we envy those who were there), you really should listen to the original studio version, on headphones with the sound tuned way up. After they meet the boxer in the clearing, the song takes off in a long repetition of that 'lie-li-lie' refrain with soaring orchestra that will chill you to the bone.

This is actually my favorite song. My dad attended the concert in Central Park and unfortunately they forgot the cymbal crashes which really changes it tonally. Unfortunately, by the time I could afford a Simon and Garfunkel concert they stopped performing due to Art Garfunkel's deteriorating voice. But this song speaks profoundly to me and despite coming out decades before my birth it still ranks as my favorite song of all time.
@bboops23
@bboops23 Жыл бұрын
Though immediately from listening to this i can say it's not the Concert in Central Park, and based on the timber of their voices it has to be some time after that, so post 1981 as Art's voice already started to get deeper by then eventually getting very deep then cracking. I would guess this was from the 90's or early 2000's, but I am only working off my knowledge of the duo rather than actual concert dates.

I've never read the lyrics to this song but I always thought the lie, lie ,lie was short for the light. I've seen in other comments that this was just meant to be a holder until they came up with better lyrics and eventually they grew to like it so they left it in. I really love the lyrics of this song, "asking only workman wages" and "a come on from the whores of 7th Ave, I do declare I sometimes took some comfort there", great lyrics.

You're about to break into tears. Must bring a sad memory. The Boxer, reminds me, of the character in the book, "Death Ship." By B Traven, who wrote the classic book/movie, "Treasure of Sierra Madre." A not very bright sailor, with bad luck. Everyone takes advantage of him. His last gig, is sailing a ship, to be sunk, for insurance purposes. Only the captain and a few officers will survive. To make the sinking more real. The Boxer, is probably doomed to die in the ring. Probably, by his opponent, using leaded gloves.

"The chorus consists of repetitions of the non-lexical vocable "lie-la-lie". Simon stated that this was originally intended only as a placeholder, but became part of the finished song. "I didn't have any words! Then people said it was 'lie' but I didn't really mean that. That it was a lie. But, it's not a failure of songwriting, because people like that and they put enough meaning into it, and the rest of the song has enough power and emotion, I guess, to make it go, so it's all right. But for me, every time I sing that part... [softly], I'm a little embarrassed.""

According to an interview I saw with Paul Simon, there is a common trick by singers in concert If they forget the words to just La la la to the melody until you remember the words again. While writing the Boxer Paul decide to put the lie lie lie in the chorus so if that ever happened in concert they we're still singing words of the song

In the original, the chorus featured the repetitive sound of hits to the bag. A much more powerful mode of presentation.

Check out THE JAYY SHOW. She's able to do a reaction on the studio version of this, without having to block the screen so we can barely see it. Seeing the artist is all part of the overall performance too.

It's a pity the recording company cut a last verse which I think completed the story. I've seen a U-tube clip of the missing verse but have been able to locate a recording containing the entire original words.

You have such a strange way of talking, I cant tell if you have an accent or just a strange cadence. Either way, I fucking love it haha. Its like soothing yet interesting at the same time. Id almost consider doing some storytelling if I was this guy.

Sometimes what is put in as a placeholder lyric becomes a crucial part of the song. That was the case here, as Simon used "lie la lie" in place of a proper chorus because he couldn't find the right words. In a 1990 interview with SongTalk magazine, Simon said: "I thought that 'lie la lie was a failure of songwriting. I didn't have any words! Then people said it was 'lie' but I didn't really mean that. That it was a lie. Simon added he is glad the chorus is wordless because "a deep truth of songwriting is we love to sing nonsensical sounds." Simon found inspiration for this song in the Bible, which he would sometimes read in hotel rooms. The phrases "workman's wages" and "seeking out the poorer quarters" came from passages.

My interpretation of the song is that the city beat him up and cut him just like the boxer was hurt in a fight, and he longs for home.

I would recommend a listen to Sound of Silence both the Simon and Garfunkle version and Disturbed. The contrast is amazing. Just checked, I guess you already did.

Simon and Garfunkel are harmonic perfection. As many others have said their studio version of The Boxer is magnitudes better than this live version. Next try Scarborough Fair, or Homeward Bound.

People are saying always do the studio version. But that is not always true. The best version of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain, is a live version on the channel Buckingham's Gems. There are two. You want the one with Buckingham wearing a straw hat in the thumbnail photo. Trust me.
