IZ was a native Hawaiian. He was considered the "Voice of Hawaii" and won many honors. When he passed he was given a state funeral. We saw scenes of the scattering of his ashes witnessed by thousands at the end of that video. He was a musical treasure and a strong advocate for the native Hawaiian people.

Voice of Hawai'i? Fuck that. You already had Don Ho. You gotta share him with us just like Black people shared Marvin Gaye with the rest of the world. I know it's a strain to you but humanity, all of us, needed a small piece of him. Maybe that's why he was so big and so gentle.

IZ is an inspiration and was loved by all. I was at Makua when they spread his ashes from the Hokule'a. Cars stopped along the 2 lane road leading to Ka'ena bringing traffic to a stand-still. Hundreds of people were wading in the water and hundreds more were on land. A procession of big rigs blew and held their horns echoing through the valley while his ashes were placed into the ocean making it sound as if the State of Hawaii was crying . . . it's a moment I will never forget. An incredible celebration of life for an incredible man!!

hands down my favorite version of this song. I get emotional every time I hear. He had a voice that made you believe that there is good in the world when so many things show otherwise

He passed away in 1997 at the age of 38. In the end of this video they are celebrating his life and pouring his ashes into the sea. We still love you IZ. ❤❤❤❤

Such a beautiful version of this song. So many people have recorded it over the years but I feel this is one of the best. Sadly Israel IZ Kamakawiwoʻole died at the age of 38 in 1997. "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" was written for the 1939 film "The Wizard Of Oz" & was sung by actress Judy Garland.

He was so special! I agree with you in regards to the healing aspects of some musical artists. Serving as a conduit….creating something magical from a higher source, whatever that may mean to one. I’m so happy you have met Iz and his gift to humanity! 😽🎶

I am so glad you listened to this. It absolutely reaches into your heart. I get a lump in my throat every time. Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was a native of Hawai'i and named "the voice of Hawai'i". This man had soul and I can easily see why he is a favored son of Hawai'i. At the end of the video, you see the joyful ceremony where he was celebrated as his ashes were given to the Pacific Ocean.

thanks, Mug! IZ "the big man" was an amazing musician.. especially that sweet voice.. truly unique.. much loved and remembered.. as you see at the end of the video... (his beloved friends and admirers return his ashes to the sea.. sad, but appropriate...)

Man, I caught a short of yours and decided to check out your channel. I love this song, have loved it for a long time, makes me cry just thinking about it, and I still have not even watched your reaction to it but am seriously looking forward to it. Here we go! Haha, he had you hooked at 0:36. Can see it in your eyes. That is the look of a man who just got kicked in the feels by a emotional donkey. So glad I landed here.

Your description or thoughts on musicians and singers being healers, wow. That struck a chord with me. I'd never thought of that but yes, so true. I love IZ. Check out some of his live on stage. Such a positive bright soul. ❤

I was raised on the beach. Each year I take my children back to my hometown for two weeks. We have a tradition that once we pack everything into the car to leave the last thing we do is walk back to the beach & sit in the sand with our toes in the surf & play this song. It's a special moment for us. Not to be morbid, but my children know to place my ashes into the Gulf & this is the song that will be played. That beach & this song will forever be special to them. ❤

Great cover from the song originally recorded by Judy Garland for the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz. Not sure if many in your generation even watched The Wizard of Oz, but it is one of the all-time great classics. Impressive production values for 1939.

I chose this song for the father/daughter dance at my daughter's wedding (she was unaware of my choice). She was in tears the entire time we danced. I love the song, but it was a bad choice for what was one of the most emotional days of my daughter's life. Well, it was memorable. Live and learn!

We are all healers, brother. Some people just have such a hard struggle, it can be hard to see. We all touch someone somewhere, most of the time never ever knowing the real impact. But we can all help someone who's hurting, even when we are hurting, and it helps. We all have the gift to heal another, it's healing ourselves that is hardest.
