They were one of the best ever vocal groups ! Everyone in 1969 went gaa gaa for this song not just because it's a great song but because "The Dawning Of The Age Of Aquarius" can be seen as bye bye to the 60's and hello to the 70's !!

These songs originated from the Broadway musical 'Hair', which opened in 1968. The story took place in the United States during the Vietnam War. There was a lot of opposition to the war. 'Hair' was also made into a movie released in 1979.

Think about what was going on in 1969. There was war, racial tensions and riots, protests . A lot of people around the world just wanted to live in peace and songs like this made them hope there could be a better place for all. Love and peace was the hope of yesterday that has faded into the reality of today

Yeah, the Aquarius half of this song is just so full of mystic hippy nonsense, and the costumes and movements and everything - it's super dated. One of those things that could only have come from that one particular era. The second half of the song absolutely slaps in any era though.

@@jawbone78Well yeah; astrology was a very popular fad/hobby of the 60's and 70's. There are many astrological references in the Aquarius section. It's going to sound completely absurd to anyone who never had any interest in astrology. Astrology is second nature to me because I grew up with all those conversations about astrology in the Sixties and Seventies. The costumes may look dated today, but color tv was still quite new at the time and performers (especially those on variety shows) did everything they could to take advantage of the new color medium.

@Jeff-vr8ov 2 жыл бұрын
She's laughing uncomfortably because she's intimidated by the beauty and majesty of this song, especially since he's giving it high praise! You can see her squirming around and looking off to the side. When you're used to today's mediocre, ugly, hate driven music, encountering great music from the past with it's beauty, harmony and positive message can be confusing and overwhelming!

Being born under the sign of Aquarius, and being of the sixties generation this has always been one of my favorite songs. In 1969 I was living in New York City,. One summer afternoon I decided to go to Central Park, and the 5th Dimension was giving a free concert there. What a treat. These 2 songs are from the musical Hair, which had some great music in it. It was on Broadway and then made into a movie.

I wanted to tell you about the musical this song is used in so I googled it.Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical is a rock musical with a book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot. The work reflects the creators' observations of the hippie counterculture and sexual revolution of the late 1960s, and several of its songs became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement. The musical's profanity, its depiction of the use of illegal drugs, its treatment of sexuality, its irreverence for the American flag, and its nude scene caused much comment and controversy. The work broke new ground in musical theatre by defining the genre of "rock musical", using a racially integrated cast, and inviting the audience onstage for a "Be-In" finale. It was also a song and dance number by the cast at the end of 40 year old virgin.i love how happy and free they look!

I remember well the attitude of America at the time. Viet Nam was being protested by liberals all over the Nation. Mostly college students because they couldn't be drafted. Many artists put out music calling for peace or just to lift people's spirits. Less than a year later the "May 4th Massacre" or the Kent State killings by the Ohio National Guard took place. The group Chicago wrote "25 or 6 to 4" about it. In the hearings following the incident, testimony said there were 25 or 26 guardsmen that opened fire and 4 were killed, 9 were wounded. That was about when Lennon released "Imagine". Sometimes you have to put the song into context to understand it.

College deferments were not permanent; if your grade point average or college hours dropped below a certain level, (whether due to failing classes, dropping classes or leaving school) you could lose your student deferment. And once you graduated, if you didn’t have a job set up that qualified for another deferment, you could be eligible for the draft. Birthdates were chosen randomly and if your birthdate was far down the list, you could assume you wouldn’t be drafted.

I liked that. It's the outro to the 40 year old virgin.

The lead singers Marilyn Mccoo and Billy Davies got married in 1969 and have been married for 53 years. They have a cute song called "Will you marry me Bill?" you should check out.

Yeah, the late 60s/early 70s was such a time for the "younger generation" to try and spread the message of "world love" across the globe. JFK, MLK, RFK had all been assassinated within 5 years of each other. "Conflicts" were going on around the world. Don't know how much good it would do, but it seems we sure could use some of that same messaging THESE days.

This was from the musical Hair in the 1960s , which was controversial due to its nudity . This was with the hippy and flower people era.

I'm one of so many of us boomers who had a massive crush on Marilyn McCoo. Check out "One Less Bell to Answer" and you'll see why. Also, this was the first record I heard when I got my first good headphones. Great memories, thanks.

When this song came out, you very rarely heard the “let the sunshine” part because it made the song too long….radio stations didn’t play a lot of songs that were over 3 minutes

THIS IS THE DAWNING OF THE AGE OF AQUARIUS- ~ Opening hook of the medley "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine" performed by the 5TH DIMENSION, merged two songs from the controversial, and in turn groundbreaking Broadway smash, "HAIR". Synchronicity and Serendipity joined forces when a wallet lost was returned to one of the groups members while performing in New York by Hair's producer, Michael Butler and mutual show invitations ensued. Butler, son of the wealthy Co-founder of the Village of Oak Brook, Illinois, the Midwest's version of Beverly Hills, was thus birth-righted an "All Access Social Pass" to the American Royalty of the times, most notably including JFK, whom as a Senator he advised on Middle East and Indian matters. During a failed run for the Illinois Senate in 1967, he developed an anti-Vietnam War focus, and after seeing the original limited run production and being blown away, acquired the rights, reworked the show (adding the infamous nude scene) and from its re-opening in April 1968 ; It ran for 1,742 performances. The author was lucky enough to attend one of those in 1969. So pleased you and OTHERS of Gen Z, Zillennials, et al are discovering this song! It means we are indeed at the dawning of the AQUARIAN AGE- and you folks- will be picking up the torch from BOOMERS to ZOOMERS. (the folks in between, not so much, all Semi- to Un-woke, big yikes for them).- HEY- we took care of Vietnam ending, women's rights, Civil rights, Gay/Lesbian rights, Trans (which I am-sort of battle continues), and brought you the internet. Not bad for one generation's work! Oh- and I-phones. Can't forget Steve. "Aquarius/Sunshine won the 1969 Grammy for "Song of the Year". IMPORTANT LESSON HERE IN HISTORICAL TERMS-WHERE REAL CHANGE BEGAN< 1969-5th Dimension's #1 Hit for 6 weeks in April and May 1969- Nailing IT! -the Zeitgeist of that moment. The ensuing weeks and months included Woodstock, "An Aquarian Exposition"; the Beatles "Get Back" an anti-prejudice ode bumped "Aquarius/Sunshine" to number 2; Charles Manson became the face of Evil; and the Stonewall Riots marked the violent birth of the LGBTQ+ movement.
